"FlatandJuicy" develops rich, visual eBooks & Apps that bridge disciplines. We enable amazing research expeditions with a beautiful treatment of their science, technology or cultural R&D, and then (AFTER this Kickstarter is done and delivered!) share the book sale revenue with them to help fund their mission. [ more VIDEO here ] OUR LAUNCH TITLE IS AN ADVENTUROUS, SMART BOOK about science and archaeology in Egypt - for knowledge junkies, seekers and explorers, or for your kids to inspire them...
City of Elephants is based on a 30 year research mission in Egypt, and is the ultimate illustrated book about ancient military technology, Greek elephant hunting campaigns in the 3rd century BC, ambition and power in the ancient world - in a time when Greek kings sponsored science, learning, technology and exploration... (yeah, we want to help save the world with science...see what we did there?).
The world is flatter everyday, thanks to technology and the internet in our pocket. Anything is available at the touch of a finger... but where do you find great science media that's more than just "sciency science?" We want to keep it juicy: deep and meaningful, but still awesome fun - and actually help real scientists and scholars.
We want to help inspire minds young and old with visionary exploration - in a mobile format that is available to everyone. We need your help. We have the skills, talent and experience, but the publishing industry we are challenging is a big, inert mass of "business as usual".
"City of Elephants" is based on "The Berenike Project", a research expedition to the Egyptian Eastern Desert that has been sponsored by National Geographic, USAID, National Endowment for the Humanities, NYU Institute for the Study of the Ancient World, and featured on the Discovery Channel.
We've seen the frustrations these researchers have faced trying to share their vision - scary-smart in their own field, they still struggle with the tech and creative media to help YOU THE READER care about the big adventures that surround their amazing work. Instead, they are forced to deal with closed, bundled scientific journals, crazy paywalls and fees, and generally more obstacles than added-value.
Berenike & Ptolemy's War Machine, Red Sea Coast, Egypt | eBook & Web-App
This ain't no crusty old history textbook...
The ultimate portrayal of the legacy of Alexander the Great after his death, when his Generals fought bitterly for control of his Empire. City of Elephants is a vividly illustrated story of exploration, ambition and adventure in the harshest climate on Earth, the most terrifying war engine of the ancient world, and an age when Greek kings sponsored science and learning from ancient Alexandria.
City of Elephants is written by Dr. Steven Sidebotham (Founding Director of The Berenike Project), and me, Jean-Louis Rivard (JLR), and illustrated with incredible media from the expedition to Egypt and by me personally ( see all the original maps, 3D CGI and imagery on this page and in this mini-portfolio, for example ) as well as an amazingly talented host of contributors and editors. Other hugely talented people will join for future publications, and we have a small stack of those in the works.
An ancient Greek and Roman city on the edge of the Egyptian Eastern Desert, re-discovered by the brilliant work of a group of world-class scholars, scientists and specialists - realized in gorgeous 2D/3D illustration, CGI and photography, and woven around a storyline about the unbridled ambition of the ancient world, together with:
We help great scientists and researchers communicate with creative media to get their stories to the world. We help you join amazing quests to invent the future, uncover the past, and explore humanity. We hope to inspire you to change the world for the better. We think that can be a good thing.
We aim to make great research beautiful, fun and accessible. You might learn something along the way, but you probably won't even realize it with so much adventure. Help us add value to visionary work. Help us fuel it with creativity and adventure.
We are asking for support to help us publish our first title "City of Elephants" eBook and Web App with our Responsive Design framework ( that's techno-geek for the best way to publish across Mobile devices, by the way), and we've lined up some awesome rewards that include amazing original illustration art, bonus media and even inclusion in the book.
We've already built a great foundation that runs our digital platform on Amazon's EC2 cloud-server infrastructure. We've developed a great system to enable brilliant research missions around the world. We've connected with truly amazing projects with years of deep research and writing credits. We are assembling a world-class Guest Editor/Advisor Board that will evolve according to the Titles we feature. We want to extend and improve all of these as we publicly launch beautiful eBooks across Amazon, Apple and Android eBook markets as well as our own Web App experience.
Our Kickstarter is totally focused on City of Elephants, but after that is delivered we will continue to release new top-tier eBooks on a regular basis, exploring science, technology and cultural R&D.
A team of technologists, creatives and scholars that has authored more than eleven books, countless scholarly articles, launched a 3D web browser and a whole range of web tech and media solutions, is producing and has been featured in documentary TV, been sponsored by National Geographic, has explored to the ends of the earth, trekked mountains and sulphur springs in Asia, and been stranded in the desert to dysentery and burning pickup trucks, yet lived to tell the tale.

We are giving ourselves lots of time, since great 3D, illustration and development is labor intensive. We will communicate regularly about our progress and any delays. The biggest risks and challenges with publishing are deadlines of course, but with science and research related publishing the depth and accuracy of the work is also critical. The core team for our launch title City of Elephants has already published 11 books and countless articles on this field (the list is seriously long), so we have a good grasp of the difficulties (plus we have a whole flock of Editor PhDs keeping a hawk-eye out for details!). The technology related challenges are ones we are minimizing by focusing this Kickstarter as much as possible on two very tightly defined works - the eBook and a tight Mobile App which again, is all about awesome, original media content. Our team has managed complex projects successfully from software development to international media exhibitions and tons of 3d visualization and digital media development, so we are dealing with what we know well, allowing us to devote as much energy as possible to awesome creative work.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
