About

WARLINE: Tactical Fantasy Battles is a maneuver warfare sandbox game that gives you full control in every aspect of battle. Founded on the "Theory of Maneuver Warfare", Warline plays differently than other wargames you might be familiar with: Instead of focusing on building power and dominating through attrition, in Warline you will prevail by means of cunning, shock, and deception. With elegant and streamlined game play, your raw creativity and decision making stand at the forefront of battle.

Standout and unique features include:

  •  Full-scope decision making. The choices you make during preparation and planning are just as engaging and meaningful as those you will make during battle.
  •  Intense asymmetric maneuver warfare. Unleash explosive magical powers to unsettle and crush your opponent.
  •  Streamlined systems modeled after retired Air Force colonel John Boyd's "Theory of Maneuver Warfare".
  •  Head-to-head or dynamic cooperative team-based play. Scheme together with your ally, uniting minds to outsmart and outmaneuver the opposing alliance.
  •  Lightning quick battles. Set up in only a few minutes and play a single match in 40 minutes or less.
  •  Endless variability and evergreen replay value.
  •  Elegant game systems invite a strong future for Warline, with hooks for expansions and new unique game modes. (Many future features are offered for free to backers.)
  •  Very low-luck game play. Diceless play ensures your cunning and creativity alone propel you to victory.
  • Warline gives you tools to craft your own unique and expressive strategy!

Warline has been designed and developed over the course of three years. The game rules have been hardened by hundreds of plays and iterations. We encourage you to download the rule books (core and kingdoms) and start exploring the depths that Warline has to offer. You can get a jump on the competition by playing the free digital recreations of Warline, on both Tabletop Simulator (page requires browser login to Steam) and Vassal. Or, if you prefer, you can even already play in real life by means of the official print-and-play edition.

Game Play Overview

Warline gives you total control over the full strategic scope. You will make meaningful decisions not only during combat, but also in all aspects of preparing for battle.

First, scout the perfect terrain on which to intercept your opponent. Sculpting the geography in this manner gives you the opportunity to determine the rate of your opponent's advance, set up traps with terrain that your kingdom alone can take advantage of—such as incinerating a forest to severely burn one or more of the opposing battalions—and give yourself a navigational advantage—such as with the Frost kingdom's "mountain march" ability.

Next, establish your outposts—key features of sustenance and command. Decide what positions are both tenable and offensively fruitful. You must keep your outposts standing in order to continue operating, and it is to your outposts that you may rescue any of your units imprisoned by the opposing army.

Now, discover your army's tactical advantages. You will use these advantages to deceive and disrupt your opponent, which can turn the tide of battle—so choose your advantages wisely!

The battlefield is defined and your strategic foundation is constructed. Use this knowledge to now recruit the perfect army, harmonizing with all of the important decisions you have made up until now. Which "battle arts" are most important for playing out your plan? What is the balance of maneuverability and power that is optimal for this battle? It is these decisions, and many others, that are key to bringing unity to your entire strategy.

It is time to march into position! Deploy your units into a unique formation, again in full coordination with your plan. Do not underestimate the importance of a strong deployment, as your units' starting positions in relation to the opposition and geography set the tone for the conflict to come.

As you plunge into battle, you have at your disposal an unparalleled tactical tool set. Detailed maneuver control affords you the ability to approach any given situation in countless ways. Simply choosing to attack is not all there is to factor into your decision making: The direction from which you strike, the position at which you conclude your attack, the resulting status of the defending unit—these are all important considerations to make on each and every turn.

Your advantage cards are multi-use. Employ your advantages in creative ways, at times that are most opportune. Will you boost a unit's maneuverability (as shown above) to give it a navigational edge? Will you enhance your unit's attack or defense strength to rewrite the outcome of a clash? Or will you confound your opponent with a critical event? The choice is yours!

Call upon your kingdom's unique "battle arts"—magical and tactical capabilities that only you command. As shown above, a Frost unit exploits her kingdom's defenses to fly across the battlefield, alight atop a rampart, and then glide down to slaughter an opposing battalion. Each kingdom has a suite of combat, navigational, and terraforming battle arts which you can use to craft your own style of play.

Sometimes engaging in combat is not the most effective action: The rout is a highly-versatile maneuver that can leave an opposing unit stunned, frozen in fear, and set up for a combined strike.

You may also rout the opposition from the battlefield, cornering the unit to capture and hold within your prison. While in your prison, you may torment the opposing unit—leverage which manipulates your opponent's decision making and pace of action.

Send your engineers out into the field to erect ramparts; impassible, immovable barriers which can be used to control the flow of battle, stymie your opponent's advance, entrap opposing units, and more.

There is no one way to win a battle. In Warline, you are offered five unique victory conditions. You are never beholden to follow a single path to victory: In fact, you are encouraged to remain fluid and change your goal as the battle unfolds. Understanding the five victory conditions helps you keep your opponent on her toes, never fully reading your intent.

"This is a very unique and intriguing game...a fantastic and wonderful experience."—Rob Oren, of Rob's Tabletop World

Across the ages, warfare has evolved. Hundreds of years ago, military structures operated on doctrine that we commonly refer to as "attrition warfare"—dominance through sheer numbers and more potent weaponry. However, operating under these ethos is costly for any civilization: Money and resources are consumed wantonly, and thousands of lives are committed.

With experience and advances in technology, warfare doctrine has progressed toward methodology that instead embraces craft, creativity, and individualization. This new doctrine is known as "maneuver warfare". Recently codified by retired Air Force colonel and fighter pilot, John Boyd, the "Maneuver Warfare Theory" has evolved our ways of analyzing and approaching warfare, leading to meaningful advances in efficiency and efficacy.

The Maneuver Warfare methodology is a fascinating way of approaching conflict, and is becoming a military norm at an ever accelerating pace—it is an opportune time to present this methodology of conflict to players. The rich palette of ideas presented in maneuver warfare accompanies a perfect canvas on which players can paint their own creative means to succeed. The ideas in the theory also make possible game play brimming with surprise, variety, and incidental narrative.

Converting a theory as deeply complex as Maneuver Warfare into a game design was no straightforward task—nor was it easy to prevent the result from being complicated and overwhelming. I spent the better part of three years researching, experimenting, testing, and refining—overcoming challenges—and ultimately arriving at what, I feel, is a beautiful and elegant expression of maneuver warfare. You can read more detail on how Maneuver Warfare Theory is integrated into the Warline game design, and also about my design process, in one of the Warline design diaries on Board Game Geek.

Throughout development, Warline was fortunate enough to have the support of a burgeoning community (both online and in real life), who put the game through the ringer in play ranging all the way from casual to organized competition. The community helped improve the game design in unimaginable ways. Now that you get a chance to experience Warline, I hope you enjoy the game as much as I and the community do.

We felt it important to further your piece of mind as a potential backer. Warline's game design is thoroughly tested and complete—but, more importantly to you as a consumer, the game's industrial design has also been thoroughly prototyped. While the print-on-demand prototype is not fully indicative of the final product, it goes a long way toward proving the physical makeup of the game, and also ensuring that we have manufacturer-approved specifications. To follow are a few photographs of a Warline prototype game session.

Risks and challenges

Warline is our first Kickstarter, so the challenges inherent with bringing to life a tabletop game for the first time are very real to us. However, our years of experience directing and managing complicated video game projects, years of manufacturing and distribution research, and partnership with a highly-experienced logistics partner (Quartermaster Logistics) all help us ensure that any and all challenges will be overcome.

If you are returning from the previously canceled campaign, you will likely notice the incredible reduction in funding goal. There are two reasons for this:
1) The previous manufacturer we were using has a minimum order requirement of 1,500 units—we are now working with a manufacturer that only requires 500 units. This alone reduced the required goal by almost 66%.
2) The previous physical design required hand assembly by factory workers. This drove up the cost of some of the components (we're talking from cents to dollars per component of these types). I have reworked the physical design to completely remove the need for factory hand assembly—even further reducing the cost of manufacturing.
