About

Bringing together some of the today's most exciting voices from the spoken word and music worlds, HUH uses rhythm and rhyme to talk about identity and movement - politically, socially, geographically.

Join us in taking this project to the next level as we develop HUH in partnership with the Roundhouse to include a Young Artists' HUH CREATIVE SESSIONS and Q&A strand, working with the next generation of musicians and spoken word artists.

Our Story

The HUH Concert features an incredible line-up including acclaimed composer Errollyn Wallen, South African baritone Njabulo Madlala, cellist and singer Ayanna Witter-Johnson, composer Jasmin Kent Rodgman, celebrated poet Salena Godden and rising spoken word artists Sophia Thakur, Solomon O.B and Kieron Rennie. Their words and music span topics from Nelson Mandela, to mental health in young men, being a young woman of colour and hope during times of conflict.

Salena Godden reads an extract from 'Shade', published as part of 'The Good Immigrant'

HUH was created by composer and producer Jasmin Kent Rodgman who wanted to create an intimate space for both artists and audiences; a space where we can challenge our concepts of culture x identity, and celebrate the roles word and music have in generating powerful discussion around important current social issues.

First developed in association with the London Symphony Orchestra (LSO) and Jerwood Arts in 2018 and supported by music/poetry collective Lyrix Organix, HUH was performed as part of the Barbican's OpenFest at LSO St Luke's and later in the year at The Albany Theatre as part of their 'No Place Like Home' migration festival.

HUH Creative Sessions + Q&A

Now in 2019 and with your support, the project is developing further to include new performances and a HUH Creative Sessions and Q&A strand, in partnership with the Roundhouse

On Saturday 22 June, HUH will be performed as part of the Roundhouse's LAST WORD FESTIVAL. Later in the year, we will be running a 'HUH Creative Sessions' series for young artists aged 18-25, giving them a chance to be mentored by our HUH musicians and poets, and partner up to workshop and create new music + spoken word pieces of their own.

These new works will be showcased at the Roundhouse accompanied by a Q&A series with our HUH Artists on cultural identity, mental health and political messaging within their work.

Our Vision

Your backing will help us kickstart the next phase of HUH: developing our project with a new partner and creating new work with the next generation of artists that in turn becomes part of the project and family. Our larger vision is for HUH to tour the UK, working with fresh talent and running workshops at each location to create an evolving concert, an artistic movement that uses poetry, song and music to share opinion and experience, bringing diversity to our artists and audience.

HUH is a brave and bold contemporary music & poetry collaboration. Please support us in developing HUH's creative vision and our work with new voices and talent.

Our £2500 target is set to go towards the HUH Artistic and Creative Session fees. Working with young artists requires a lot of manpower and this involves both mentor and performance fees of all artists involved. Ensuring their time and commitment is supported is vital to our project - this is what our Kickstarter campaign and your backing will help us achieve.

Risks and challenges

HUH is a highly ambitious project with many artists involved. This is one of the best things about the project - many creative voices coming together to support HUH's vision - but also poses a challenge in terms of budgeting.

We need to ensure that all the people involved in bringing the HUH performances, workshops and Q&A events are paid for their time and skills.

Not only is this campaign a great way to share our story with you, but a creative way to support HUH and its artists; a way that directly involves our followers and artistic community.
