Hi, there! I'm Jenny Klukken. I am a Minnesota-born woman who loves to play the marimba, write music, and a paint. I started playing the marimba over 10 years ago, when I was first starting my percussion degree and it quickly became my passion.
TO GIVE YOU SOME CONTEXT... The modern marimba is typically found in classical or new-music settings, played by soloists or within chamber ensembles. For the first few years of my professional career, I admired classical marimbists and modeled my musical path after theirs. Yet, as I've gradually grown into my own musical voice, I have discovered what I really love is JAZZ, WORLD, and FOLK music. I love to IMPROVISE, ACCOMPANY, and FREEPLAY on the marimba. Despite the marimba's versatility, I find this approach pretty rare. I want to create more music that brings the marimba into these types of musical roles and settings.
I am going to make an album of my compositions that features me on marimba, backed by percussion, bass, guitar, violin, and more. It will be PACKED with sounds from all over the world: salsa, flamenco, jazz, tango, Brazilian, and just touch of classical marimba. I'm planning on recording this album in San Jose, Costa Rica, with some amazing musicians and a producer that I am connected to there. Going to Costa Rica also puts me in easier access to the types of musicians I need to make my tunes really shine. I'll do the final stages of producing the album in Minneapolis.

Kickstarter is an amazing way to gather support directly from the people that care about my music, rather than having to adhere to a third-party's vision, agenda, budget, or what-have-you. Instead, Kickstarter is a direct line between the artist and the art-appreciator. It also enables me to interact with supporters/fans in some really cool ways! (more on that below)
To fund the entire project, I'm also doing an Arts Commissions Drive. This will function outside of Kickstarter and is a campaign to book TEN commissioned pieces of art before the end of 2019. All of the proceeds from my art sales will go into funding the project. If you'd like to support my project that way, click here!
When you back my project, you get some perks for your awesome support!
- Digital download of the album
- Hard, signed copy of the album
- A print of my artwork
- "JK Art & Music" tote bag
- An invite to an EXCLUSIVE pre-release listening party at a recording studio in Minneapolis

Here are the items Kickstarter money will help fund:
- Recording space usage fees

- Mastering (final touches to make it sound top notch)
- Collaborators (drums, bass, etc.)
- Producer fees
- Production and shipping of the CDs
- Kickstarter fees
- Kickstarter coaching fees
I am honored that you are considering backing my project. I truly believe that this album will be GREAT. Not only does your pledge mean that you believe in my artistic growth, but you are putting action into enabling artists around you. (Good job, you!) It means that you believe in giving artists the resources they need ( and often lack ) in order to make the world a much more beautiful place.
Risks and challenges
This is a pretty low-risk project because the music has already been written, and the recording plans are already in place (pending Kickstarter success). There are always things like manufacturing delays, illness, and emergencies that are possible, but I've put a ton of prep into launching this project. I'm very committed to making this project happen!
I've also reached out for help by enlisting Laser Malena-Webber, a seasoned musician from the Doubleclicks, and TOTAL PRO at crowdfunding creative projects just like this.
On the music front, I've decided to work with an experienced producer in Costa Rica to help maximize this album's success.
