About

THE GAME

Shepherds and Wolves is a handcrafted board game for 2 players.  It's easy to learn and tests your defensive and offensive game strategies.

This game is great for the young, old, and in between.  My 5-year-old daughter loves playing the game.

Gameplay takes place in a lovely meadow.  Shepherds work to rid the meadow of wolves.  Wolves work to rid the meadow of sheep.

The shepherds are slow, but they are persistent.  They can move at most three spaces as they try to remove all the wolves from the meadow.  The wolves cannot harm them.  Once the last wolf is removed from the board, the shepherds have won.

The wolves move fast and work in a pack.  They can move up to 6 spaces as they try to eat all of the nine sheep.  Once the last sheep has been eaten, the wolves have won.

 GAMEPLAY

Decide which player will be the wolves and which will play the shepherds.

Wolves roll the 6-sided black dice first.

Shepherds roll the red dice numbered 1-3.

Wolves and Shepherds alternate rolling turns.

Wolves go first.  Roll the wolf dice once and move in any direction moving one space at a time for every number rolled on the dice (numbered 1-6).  The ultimate goal for the wolf player is to take all the sheep off of the game board.

Shepherds roll.  Roll the shepherd dice and try to reach any wolves within your roll or if the wolf/wolves are too close, use your roll to protect your sheep!  The ultimate goal of the shepherds is to take all the wolves off of the game board by landing on them.

 MOVING

Sheep

Sheep pieces do not move.  They stay in one spot as the shepherds try to protect them.

Wolves

Wolves can move diagonally, sideways, or up and down.  Numbers rolled on the dice can be split between different pieces.  As wolves attack, each sheep they land on is taken out of the game.  Wolves cannot jump over shepherds or sheep.

Shepherds

Shepherds can move diagonally, sideways, or up and down. Numbers rolled on the dice can be split between different pieces. They cannot jump over sheep.  They must go around them. As shepherds attack wolves, each wolf they land on is taken out of the game.

 SHIPPING

Shipping and handling for the games will be calculated after purchase, but below I have a close estimate of the final cost. Both game boxes would easily fit inside of a first class priority mail box.  The wooden box would have a slightly higher cost for shipping.

  MY STORY

My name is Jimmy Tim Fry.  I live in upstate New York with my wife and two children.  I’m a metal sculptor/artist, woodworker, and elementary school teacher.  I love playing board games, gardening, hiking, reading, building things and learning about new materials.  I’ve worked in many different fields including marketing, book publishing, baking bread, assisting a ceramic artist, and teaching.  I love teaching because it is different every day and making learning enjoyable for kids is just a pretty awesome thing to do for a living.  I’ve mass produced bookshelves for a Montessori school, sculptures, projects for kids in camps, and have shown my artwork in various galleries in the Northeast.  I’ve been metal sculpting for 20 years, woodworking for 10, and teaching for 15.

The design, drawings for the box and woodworking in this project are all the fruits of my own two hands.  My grandfather was an auto mechanic and I loved being in his home because everything in it was tweaked a bit by him.  The gate handles, latches, air conditioner, tools, door knobs, were all redesigned after small component failures.  If something stopped working, he would first try to fix it.  His life was DIY.  This project is a bit of my desire to be more like my grandpa.

My biggest competitor has been my 5 year-old daughter.  She prefers playing the shepherds and I had to tweak the dice for the game after losing to her more often than I could handle.

One reason this project has been so fun for me is that metal sculpture cannot be mass produced easily.  Making a metal sculpture is an expensive process which means the cost of my pieces must be high.  To buy a metal sculpture, you have to have a large enough property or house to install it and you must have a lot of money on hand to be able to justify buying a large piece you like.  If I wanted to “make it’ as a metal sculptor, I’d need to market to the high end buyer.  Not being a high end buyer myself, this rubs me the wrong way.  I’d like to make things anyone can enjoy.  I’m excited about this project because it adds all my passions into one package that can be shared by anyone.  I can make this project affordable to anyone who wants to give it a try.

What’s next? I have other games I’d like to make.  Last month I came up with another board game I’m excited to work on.  It’s a 2-4 player game that has a circular design instead of a square.  I have a list of other board game ideas bubbling up in the cauldron as well that I’d like to get out there.

 THE IDEA

The idea for Shepherds and Wolves came to me when I was preparing a summer camp for elementary age kids called DIY Board Games.   In the camp, I taught students about simple probability, gave each one of them a blank wooden board as a game canvas, and used the game I made (Shepherd’s and Wolves) as a teaching guide to help them design their own games.  The camp was pretty awesome.  I’ve been working on developing it for a year now and feel it is ready to go.  I have played the game with friends, family, co-workers and my students.  In the end, I’ve gotten a ton of enjoyment making the game, experimenting with tweaks and alterations, and researching how to make the game happen on a larger scale.

GAME DESIGN

I wanted a game on a grid board like a chess board, but where the goal was to go to the center of the board instead of to the sides.  A chess and checkerboard are 8 x 8.  If the board has too many tiles, the shepherds can be outrun too easily.  Since the board has four sides, four shepherds and four wolves made the most sense.  The number of sheep was another story and needed some play and experimentation to figure out.

The first step in making this game was how many tiles to have on the board.  The original game board was a 12 x 12 grid.  I made sheep pawns and started playing around.  If you wanted to have game pieces form a square in the center of a a 12 x 12 board, the center square would have to have a side with on even number to fit on the board.  So, I could have a board with 4 sheep (2 x 2) or 16 sheep (4 x 4).  4 sheep would be too easy for the wolves to capture with a dice that went up to 6 and 16 sheep would be too challenging.  A board with 16 sheep would also need to be increased to 14 x 14 tiles to make room for the shepherds and wolves to move around.  So, I made a 13 x 13 board.  This allows for the center square to have an odd number of sides and 9 sheep (3 x 30 seemed like the perfect fit.  There is room for the wolves and shepherds to move as they jockey for position to attack or defend the sheep.

I next worked on the dice and game play to make the two sides of the game fair.  The dice, of course, add a bit of the random to the game.  The game allows for different strategies and you can switch sides to test your skill a bit more.

This project has the option to buy the cardboard game or the wooden box design.  The wooden box folds over and has a space on the inside for the pieces and directions.  The original board was a flat ½ inch piece of plywood.  I wanted a folded box version because it’s just a nice feel.  I did look into outsourcing a laser cutter to add my font and artwork to the wooden box, but the price was just too high for my liking.

Risks and challenges

The biggest challenge to this project is finding the time to make the handmade wooden boxes. That's why I'd need the summer of 2020. I'm a teacher and could use the summer months to finish up this project.

Hand-making anything allows for slight differences in each box created. Personally, I like a little bit of the unique in life. It's what the Japanese art of Wabi Sabi is all about. The wooden boards would have individual differences as every piece of wood is slightly different.

I have two children under the age of 6 and a full time job from September to June. I would produce most of the hand-made boards the summer of 2020. The kids would have a babysitter or camp for the summer so I could mass produce the boxes.
