Make the workshop/ small stage space at Jimmy's No 43 even better than before!
Right in the middle of New York's ever-energetic East Village neighborhood lies Jimmy's No 43, a craft beer pub located in a subterranean space which was once a Ukrainian supper club. Head down the hallway behind the bar and you will find the Back Room where many a play has been workshopped, comedians had their first stage experience, and playwrights see their work first come to life.
Owner Jimmy Carbone is a man with a big heart. He cares about locally grown food products, (most of the menu is locally sourced from small farmers) finely crafted beers, (Jimmy created the Good Beer Seal) and the health of the arts in his community. So much so that in 2005 and 2009, Jimmy was recipient of the title “Local Hero” from NYC Arts. Today, he serves on boards of all types, but beyond this he knows the arts need a space to workshop and grow their work.
For the past seven years, Jimmy has worked with local arts organizations to give them space in the Back Room to grow their work and their audiences. Most of this is given as an in-kind donation, knowing the needs of the arts and their small budgets. Groups like Rising Phoenix Repertory, ESPA Primary Stages Program, id Theater have held workshops of new productions in the space. The quality of the work is tremendous, and great performers-- including Reggie Watts and Ben Walker-- have spent some time on the small stage of the Back Room.
These committed artists deserve to have a better facility to work, and Jimmy's No 43 does not have the cash to make those improvements- especially after dealing with the loss of revenue from Sandy and the post-storm recuperation period.
We need your help to pay for upgrades for the room:
1) Sound System: speakers, sound board, general A/V capabilities
2) Lighting: and running more electricity to the back room to make that possible
3) Deep Clean: the room needs to be cleaned, walls painted, floors buffed and then maintained!
4) Heating and Cooling: both sides of the coin need to be improved
5) Ongoing Operating Costs: cost of electricity, managing the calendar, and other things
Truly, we cannot to this without your support!

The staff of Jimmy's No 43 does not have a background in designing and putting in place the specific needs of a theater space, but the long term relationships that we have with many theater companies (mentioned above plus so many others) will fill that need. We have already had soft conversations with our theater community partners about this, and we are very confidant Jimmy's No 43 will finish this space upgrade with ease.
