ENGADGET.COM - "We've had a bunch of fun testing out GoPro cameras, but one thing that has always been a source of frustration is the fiddly mount system. A problem that's seemingly inspired a Kickstarter project called Headcase Pro. Effectively it's a lightweight aluminum case aimed at making the GoPro infinitely more mountable."

FOTORATER.COM - "We love to hear of new innovators in the photographic industry, and Jim Clark’s innovations deserve the acclaim they’re receiving. He’s seen a niche and he’s nailed it."
In the last year and a half, I've used the GoPro camera on a bunch of projects, but the plastic housing and single mount on the GoPro clear case have cost us multiple cameras and plenty of frustrations. I've looked high and low for a better solution, but I couldn't find anything.
I knew there was a better way to mount my GoPro, just like the professional photography and cinema gear we use in production, so I made the commitment to create it myself.
After 5 months and roughly 3 million design considerations, I settled upon two different anodized aluminum, lightweight cases that both work with the GoPro Hero and the Hero II. If you are a professional or just shoot your GoPro for fun, I have a sweet, flexible solution for you!
The HEADCASE PRO is an ultra lightweight case machined from a single piece of billet aluminum with a rock-solid stainless steel door latch, rubber buttons & cable port inserts, front & rear windows, and removable screw-on protective lens rings with a rubber cap and filter threads.
The stainless steel door latch on the HEADCASE PRO is engineered to self-tighten when inertial forces are applied. A pair of rare-earth magnets keep it securely in place.
HEADCASE PRO uses the readily available lens & rubber gasket kit from GoPro's website. For total lens protection, the screw-on lens ring extends 0.5mm beyond the glass dome.
HEADCASE PRO FEATURES:
- Retrofit design works with both the GoPro Hero and Hero II cameras.
- Keep out grime and moisture with rubber sealed buttons, windows and door.
- Protect your camera from extreme abuse with aluminum and stainless steel construction.
- Mount your camera anywhere, in any configuration with 9x quarter-twenty threaded holes.
- Say NO to lens damage with the protective screw-on lens ring - 40mm filter threads and rubber lens cap included.
- The GoPro camera body is protected from extreme shock by foam pads embedded inside the case.
- Access all cable ports just by removing the sealed rubber inserts.
- All four tally lights on the HERO 2 remain visible via sealed, acrylic light tubes.
- The GoPro’s delicate front display and tally light are protected by a single, replaceable window.
- There's no need to carry multiple doors anymore! Use your camera stand-alone, with the GoPro battery Pack or with the GoPro Monitor. The HEADCASE has a rigid, reversible-flippable rubber hood with embedded acrylic window that fits tightly inside the rear door. 1 hood=3 modes.

*The HEADCASE PRO is not a pressurized underwater case. This case is sealed and intended for above surface use in wet and dry conditions.
HEADGEAR with UNRULY WET-R lens ring set and rubber cap.
HEADGEAR is an ultra-lightweight, anodized aluminum frame, machined from a single piece with 8x 1/4-20 threaded holes, anti-corrosive anode and a stainless clamping bolt.
HEADGEAR is easy to use and install. Remove the plastic GoPro leg from the clear case and securely clamp the HEADGEAR base onto the mounting ribs with the included stainless steel Allen bolt. Now you can mount it to anything-anywhere. Or mount anything to your GoPro!
HEADGEAR allows you to use any standard 1/4-20 threaded accessory made for still cameras. The HEADGEAR frame and lens set also protect the delicate GoPro clear case and camera from blunt force impact, scratches and flying debris.
GoPro case firmly clamps inside HEADGEAR and won't shift or rattle.
Anti-corrosive anode with stainless screw included.
- Retrofit design works with both the GoPro Hero and Hero II cameras.
- Keep your GoPro dry while getting all of the mounting options used by the pros! Mount your camera to anything via one or more of the 8x threaded mounting holes.
- Protect your camera lens with the WET-R or WET-S lens ring sets and rubber cap.
- The super-tough anodized aluminum HEADGEAR frame prevents damage and destruction to your fragile camera.
- Replaceable anode protects the HEADGEAR from salt water corrosion when shooting in the ocean.
-R (ROUND LENS KIT)
WET-R round lens ring and rubber cap on GoPro clear case.
The UNRULY -R (round) flat lens set replaces the standard GoPro six-screw ring and clear dome, giving you standard filtration options and preventing underwater blur.
WET-R and WET-S lens ring sets are designed to work in unison with HEADGEAR, or as a stand alone lens protection and filter solutions for the GoPro clear case. Either way, you're covered!
The outer retainer ring on the -R series is a removable female to female adapter that secures our custom 3mm thick, clear, anti-reflection coated filter against a watertight o-ring.
You can also remove the glass filter and screw on a standard 55mm round filter. Or you can unscrew the outer glass retainer ring and screw a 55mm filter on backward to prevent most vignetting in the widest shooting modes. We've given you every possible option to shoot the way you want.
The -R lens kits consists of (l-r) base O-ring, dome filler plug, male threaded ring, filter o-ring, filter glass, female-female outer retainer ring and rubber protective cap.
*All -R round lens rings will vignette in 4:3 shooting mode on GoPro, due to the extremely wide filed of view. See -S below...
-S (Square lens kit)
WET-S filter ring set shown here in GoPro clear case.
The UNRULY -S (square) lens ring set for GoPro was designed to avoid vignetting in all shooting modes and prevent blur underwater.
Like the -R round ring set, the -S square comes with a custom 3mm thick anti-reflective glass filter and retainer ring with 8 screws.
The -S lens ring set consists of (l-r) base O-ring, dome filler plug, square frame, filter o-ring, filter glass, adjustable retainer ring and rubber protective cap (not shown).
*The WET lens series is intended for above or underwater use. A pair of o-rings prevents water entry at great depths.
**We are currently dept pressure testing the WET lens ring series.
***All UNRULY lens ring sets allow you to also use the existing GoPro clear glass dome with rubber grommet, without the clear flat glass. The solid outer ring will act as a protective bezel to keep your glass dome free from scratches. The included rubber lens cap keeps you covered. Due to vignetting, you can not however use the glass dome and filter at the same time.
****Vignetting may occur with other filters brands and waterproofing is not guaranteed.
*****The PRO-R and PRO-S lens ring sets for HEADCASE PRO are identical to the WET-R and WET-S ring sets, but differ in their mounting adapter.

It's no secret that the GoPro door latch is unpredictable and prone to breaking or popping open. My solution is locking the door with a steel pin and forcing a double action to get it open.
Simply press and hold the protected side lever to disengage the stainless, spring-loaded pin that locks the latch pieces together, lift the clip and open.
With BEARTRAP there's no chance of accidents, and the door will only open when you want it to open!
SUMMARY: The cost of manufacturing the HEADCASE PRO, HEADGEAR and BEARTRAP is daunting in small quantities. The funds that you contribute pay for machining, custom tooling, pad printing, stamping dies and expensive plastic injection molds. The design and sleepless nights are free!
I'll keep doing the hard work and putting in the time, but I need your help to fund the big expenses and make this a successful project that we can all share in.
Thank you for making this awesome project a reality!
*And a big shout out to my talented friends: Seth, Jen, Gretchen, Dave, Phil Michael, Chuck & Glen. I couldn't do this thing without rock stars like you!
We've settled upon 55mm standard round screw-on filters for the -R lens rings and 2"x2" square for the -S lens rings. We're also providing our own clear filters with both ring shapes.
That is correct. The HEADGEAR is an exo-frame that encompasses the waterproof GoPro clear case. The HEADCASE PRO is rubber sealed for water and dust, but it's not intended for full submersion.

Regarding the reversible BacPac spacer. When flipped to allow for a BacPac, does it extend outside the housing? It seems that this could be useful as an LCD sunshade, so ... bonus! My question, however, is if the spacer can simply be removed, leaving the
The spacer has been carefully designed to double as a lens shade outside the camera when using the monitor or battery. It functions as the spacer when no accessories are used. It's a triple threat!
I am now including a second rubber spacer without a hood, that will work in battery or monitor mode, but not with the GoPro stand alone.
I hope to provide a separate spacer to use with the battery or monitor, that does not protrude as a hood. It's a cost issue, but I'll do my best!
You mention that you need the funding in part for "expensive plastic injection molds" I thought it was made from aluminum. What parts are plastic?
The hood, buttons and port covers are made of molded rubber. The lens rings are made from a high-strength plastic blended with fiberglass to cut cost, reduce weight and increase strength.
The HEADGEAR is specifically designed to function with the GoPro clear case while mounted in the frame, and retain full, normal door access and functionality. That was a design requirement from day one!
There is always a risk of fogging inside the lens, based on air condensation and the conditions when you prepare the camera, but this area is sealed between the GoPro lens bezel and the ring with the rubber gasket, so there is very little, if any, opportunity for moisture to enter. There is always the risk of water condensing on the outside, just like the GoPro clear case, or any other lens shield. I've shot my Canon 5D in incredibly acclimate South Pacific storm weather inside my Aquatic underwater housing and with clear lens filters, and luckily I've never had an issue with fogging. I expect the same will apply here. It all depends on the air and moisture level when you assemble. A friend of mine keeps his gear in a warmed cabinet at all times to prevent this.
We do not know the dimensions at this point... I sure hope so!
I am currently working on getting a exclusive safety certification for the HEADCASE PRO in dangerous or extreme situations such as on aircraft or race tracks. The door and lens ring on the HEADCASE PRO now include screws to lock moveable pieces down.
I've incorporated a small threaded hole that passes through the lowest side of the door and foot, directly beneath the latch. An Allen screw travels safely in this hole in the door at all times. When you want to absolutely lock the door, remove the screw from the door and slide it up through the foot, into the door and tighten. Now the only way to open the door is to remove this screw.
To lock the lens ring in place, there is a small set screw that travels inside the front wall of the case just behind the lens ring. It's covered by a small rubber seal that doubles as a camera pad. To lock down the ring just pop off the pad, tighten the set screw until it bites the lens ring and replace the pad.
I'm including a small Allen key that travels inside the door that fits the door locking screw and the lens set screw.
The entire HEADCASE PRO housing, fully assembled, is right around 10oz, making your entire GoPro package less than a pound. It's incredibly light and strong!
The HEADGEAR is approx 2/3 the weight of the HEADCASE PRO.
*I have added photos of the HEADCASE PRO in production on the updates page.

The HEADCASE PRO comes with the Pro-R Round Lens Kit. What is the functional difference between using the camera with the Pro-R Round Lens Kit versus just the standard dome lens kit that comes with the camera?
The dome that comes with the GoPro shoots about 10% narrower than the naked lens and it blurs around the edges underwater. It's also impossible to add filtration to the GoPro with the dome on. It's so wide that you see the edges of any filter. in your image.Removing the dome and adding a wide, thin piece of glass right against the naked lens is the only way to achieve filtration and not vignette in the corners. It's been a tough one to solve...You can use our -R lens with your dome for protection, but you can't use them at the same time.
HEADCASE PRO is a complete, sealed case with nine mounting points for the GoPro without the clear case.
HEADGEAR is an exo-frame that surrounds your GoPro in the clear case, to protect it and let you mount it anything with rock-solid stability.
You can also mount anything to either case. Although the HEADCASE PRO is sealed, it's not meant for underwater use like the HEADGEAR.
There's a lot of info on the main page that explains the differences.
