Ten years ago, on April 1, 2009, my first book was published. It was called By Darkness Hid, and it would change my life. Since that day, the Blood of Kings trilogy has become a favorite for many readers and their families. The series has also won several awards, including two Christy Awards, and has been the source of more fan letters than all the rest of my books put together. So many times people have asked after audio books, and I decided it was time to make that happen.
I have tried a few times to record the audio books on my own (anyone remember the podcasts?), but I finally had to admit that I just don't have the time, the equipment, or the expertise to do the project right. So I held auditions for the parts of Vrell and Achan, and my readers floored me with their talent! Ultimately, I chose two narrators to read for Achan and Vrell, and that's why I'm here on Kickstarter, hoping to raise enough to pay them for their time (these are LONG books!) and to cover all the other production costs of producing an audio book.
About the Book
In case you are new to this series, here is the back cover blurb for book one, By Darkness Hid:
Darkness divides the land.
Half of Er'Rets is locked beneath an impenetrable shroud. On the side that still sees the sun, two young people struggle to understand the mind-communication abilities thrust upon them.
It's called bloodvoicing. Some say it's a gift. One of the newly "gifted" wish it had never come.
Achan had been a slave all his life. Worse than a slave—a stray. He is consigned to the kitchens of a lord and forced to swallow a foul potion every day. When an enigmatic knight offers to train Achan for the Kingsguard, he readily accepts. But his new skills with the sword do not prepare him for the battle raging between the voices in his head.
Vrell Sparrow is not who she seems. She masquerades as a boy to avoid capture by the powerful forces that seek to exploit her. But Vrell feels called to help a young squire who recently discovered his bloodvoicing gift, even if doing so requires her to work with those who could destroy her.
While Achan learns to use his new ability, Vrell struggles to shut hers down. All the voices strive to learn Achan and Vrell's true identities—and a different kind of voice is calling them both. Toward a destination that is by darkness hid.
Introducing My Narrators
Will Cloud reading for Achan Cham
Hey everyone! My name is Will Cloud, and I am currently a junior at Liberty University studying Theater Arts. My goal is to eventually make it Broadway as an actor or director, but my ultimate dream is to found my own theater company. When I’m not rehearsing or working on design projects, I enjoy rock climbing, soccer, singing, and watching movies. I’m not a great writer but I love books and working on my own stories when I get the chance. I’m very excited to be a part of this project and to combine two of my loves (books and acting) into one creative endeavor.
Gillian Bronte Adams reading for Vrell Sparrow
Gillian Bronte Adams is an adventure chaser, storyteller, and professional reader of books (commonly known as an audio book narrator). Rarely found without a coffee in hand and rumored to pack books before clothes when she hits the road, she is the author of the fantasy series THE SONGKEEPER CHRONICLES and enjoys writing about outcast characters who wander broken roads to epic adventures. At the end of a long day of narrating and typing, she likes to saddle up her wild thing (commonly known as a horse) and ride off into the sunset. She loves meeting fellow book lovers online through her website and Instagram.
If we meet our first goal of $2500, that will fund the By Darkness Hid audio book, and we hope to get that recorded and delivered by the end of September. If we can raise more than our goal, however, we want to give you more!
Stretch Goal #1
If we meet our first stretch goal of $5000, that will fund both By Darkness Hid and book two, To Darkness Won.
Stretch Goal #2
If we meet our second stretch goal of $7500, that will fund the audio books for By Darkness Hid, To Darkness Fled, and From Darkness Won.
Stretch Goal #3
And if you guys still want more Blood of Kings fun, anything above the $7500 goal will go toward paying an amazing young artist to illustrate a graphic novel of By Darkness Hid.
The rewards are all listed on the right-hand sidebar of this page, but I wanted to show you some pictures of them too so you know what fun we have planned.
Hard Cover Books
For Christmas a few years back, my husband gave me an Alice in Wonderland book pillow that he bought from ThinkGeek.com. I love that pillow! And ever since I first held it, I wanted to make one for one of my books. Well, I have done so, but it was a bit tricky. First I had to design special fabric, then find a place to print it, then get permission from my publisher to print it, and then when it came, I had to cut it out and sew the pillow. It wasn't quite as easy as I hoped and required some alterations to my original pattern, but I did it. And I think it's fabulous. But it was very time consuming and expensive, which is why I've put a limit on the number of pillows I can make. Check out how amazing they look.

Risks and challenges
Once funded, we will work hard to make sure the By Darkness Hid audio book is complete and delivered in the fall of 2019. I have listed a delivery date of December, but if all goes well, we hope to have it to you by September. Also, pillow prizes will be sewn as quickly as I can sew them. I listed September as a delivery date, but that could change depending on my schedule.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
