Founded in 1989, the Octopodes are Johns Hopkins University's oldest a cappella group, and next year we are turning 25 years old! To celebrate this milestone we are seeking support for an album of entirely original music titled The Kraken.
No collegiate a cappella group has ever produced an album of entirely original music before. We want to seize this opportunity not only as an avenue of self-expression, but also as a chance to propel a cappella music in a more creative direction. By helping define ourselves as a group of artists, rather than merely a group of singers, The Kraken will also establish The Octopodes at the forefront of collegiate a cappella music.
Why should I care about this project?
We aim to not only create an album that expresses who we are, but also to inspire other collegiate a cappella groups to do the same. By donating to this project, you are doing more than just supporting the Octopodes. You are supporting the idea that singers can be artists too, and that collegiate a cappella can be an avenue for innovative and creative music. Help us be the first ones through the wall to empower other a cappella groups to write and record their original music.
We need your help to make The Kraken a reality.
Our campaign aims to raise $10,000 for our project. Each of our eight tracks will cost about $1000 to record, mix and master. The other $2000 will fund duplication of CDs, the various Kickstarter gifts, and guidance from professional a cappella musicians. Remember that Kickstarter campaigns are all-or-nothing, so if we do not meet our $10,000 goal we will not receive any support for our project.
What happens if we exceed our $10,000 goal?
In the absolutely incredible scenario that we exceed our goal, we plan to extend The Kraken to make it even bigger and better than the mythical beast itself. If we raise $12,000 we will add another track to The Kraken and film a music video for our single. Every additional $2000 after that will go to new tracks on the album.
Thank you in advance for your invaluable help in funding this project.

**Special thanks to our alumnus Diego Ardila who wrote The Octopodes' first original song "The Clock", featured in our video, for showing us how rewarding writing original vocal music can be.
Risks and challenges
Our biggest challenge will be discovering how to write original a cappella music for the first time. The answer to most challenges is hard work and collaboration. We have already begun writing the eight songs for our album, one of which has already been arranged completely! We will update you periodically throughout our creative and recording process to let you know how the project is going as our sound evolves.
Rest assured, we are working with the fantastically talented folks over at The Vocal Company (www.thevocalcompany.com/) who are of the best in the field of recorded a cappella music. With their combination of musical talent and technical know-how, we are confident that we can handle anything that comes up.
