Three years in the making by an international team of experts in Russia, England and the US, this is a 235 page, full color, hardcover book that contains the complete history of the N-1, from its origins as a booster for missions to Mars and Venus to, the abrupt change with a directive from the highest levels of Soviet government to “beat the Americans to the moon!”
It is a complex book printed on coated stock with four-color-separations on each page and fold-out pages showing the missions and hardware details. Using the industry standard of setting the retail price at 8X the production costs (to allow for distributor and retailer markups), this book should sell for $79.95. I would like to be able to sell it for $39.95 to make it affordable to modelers and aerospace history buffs, but the only way to do that is to offset some of the production expenses. That's the purpose of this Kickstarter campaign.
Risks and challenges
This is a very low-risk project. I have been publishing this genre of books for nearly 20 years. The authors and I have waited until the book was essentially complete and ready for the printer before starting this campaign. The only question is what price will go on the cover.
The printer is already primed and ready to receive the files for production, so there is very little doubt that the book and the premiums will be ready by the end of January.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
Yes, but it will by by surface mail rather than Priority. That's about 2 weeks (max) for most places in Europe (less for Canada) rather than 1 week for Priority.
We wanted to offer an exclusive reward that would personalize the book for every backer. Having the book autographed by all five authors and then serialized was chosen as the way to do this.
However, we are expecting at least 100 backers, perhaps twice that many. With the authors spread out over, literally, half the globe the logistics of shipping a couple of hundred books from the western US, to the eastern US to England to three widely spaced regions of Russia, and then back were just unworkable. The expense alone would require another Kickstarter campaign! There's also the possibility that a significant number of them wouldn't make it back.
The solution was to have the authors sign by bookplate. These are custom designed sheets signed by the authors and glued permanently into the front of the book. Each plate will be authenticated and serialized by the editor as it's attached.
No. They are designed specifically as rewards for this campaign and will only be run off to fill the exact number of backers who selected them.
However, Nick retains all the rights to his CGI creations, and he is free to sell other CD collections of his work in the future.
Will I be able to pick which poster I'd like out of the multiple ones listed in the Reward category?
Yes, of course!
The formatting of the Kickstarter reward boxes apparently does not allow the use of "returns" to format text into bulleted lists. It was supposed to be a "Pick List" of which one you want with the asterisk (*) in the front of each choice.
I made another stab at formatting them but the KS text boxes used for the Reward description don't allow more than one space between words or any line feeds.
