THANK YOU EVERYONE!
We've reached our goal, now it's stretch goal time for the $3K point.
The first item I'll be working on is a similar sign to the funny "In Case of Kaiju Attack" (Godzilla) which I've seen online. However, in our case I'm creating a "In Case of Jiang Shi Attack" (Hopping Chinese Vampires) sign since we are dealing with vampires. I've hired a graphic artist in Africa to help out with this and we will create this funny artwork together!
You are awesome for checking this out, thanks!
What would you do if your grandmother stole your child’s soul to regain her youth and is now leading a pack of Jiangshi army (hopping mindless vampires) to take over the world?
A. Save your kid and fight!
B. Join her; having a pack of man eating minions is cool!
C. Do nothing. The end of the world is nigh.
Ever since Tamara became a vampire, things have gone downhill. Her grandma runs off with her daughter’s soul and then her husband thinks she’s gone crazy. The only thing certain right now is that she has to save her daughter, no matter what the cost. Caught in the middle of a war between vampires, sorceresses and warlocks, she discovers an alternative history to the world she thought she knew.
Meanwhile, strange jiangshi corpse zombies and other supernatural creatures start attacking civilians across the globe. Magic, which had been subdued after water contamination tactics in a past war, appears to be making a comeback; threatening the modern civilization which the vampires have built throughout the ages.
The timeless battle between good & evil, black & white, ying & yang, and bearded mongooses is beginning once again. (Just checking if you are still awake at this point! Alas, no mongosses in book.)
On top of worrying about a failing marriage, comatose child and selfish grandmother; Tamara starts hearing sinister voices in her head. Does she have any hope of saving her family? Or will she live the rest of her long unnatural life filled with regrets?
This fantasy adventure is a bittersweet tale about dealing with devastating choices, filial responsibilities, betrayal, redemption and finding the strength to carry on when it seems like there is no future.
Hi, my name is JF Garrard and I am the author of The Undead Sorceress, the first book of a series called The International House of Vampires.
I live in Toronto which is a city full of little countries. We have a Little Italy, Little Portugal, Little India, Greektown, Chinatown, Japantown, Koreatown and more!
I spent my whole life waiting for a vampire book which reflects the reality of the city I live in. Because people come in different colors, shapes and sizes, so why can't vampires?
So I got tired of waiting and decided to write my own multicultural, dark urban fantasy book.
My writing is for fellow readers interested in reading about different cultures, genders and new take on old ideas. It's the first book in a series, so there are more stories that will be forthcoming.
Creating a book has many steps and one of most important steps is to hire a professional editor to polish up the story. Also, I searched around the globe for artists to create concept art.
This book needs to go through 3 types of editing before printing: in depth (content, characters, plot), copy editing (word clarity, grammar) and proofreading (spell check). Hiring a professional editor and then formatting the book will take up most of the budget as these services are expensive.
There are self-published authors who don't edit, but I refuse to compromise on quality - I wouldn't want to buy a book that is difficult or clumsy to read. A good editor is worth their weight in gold and I have utmost respect for them.
With every artist, I explain that the words are most important to me, but art is second most important to fully immerse the reader into this new world. I have been speaking with artists & cartographers in the US, Canada, Philippines, Romania, Tunisia and Austria. As you can see from some of the artwork on this page, there are some truly gifted people willing to help someone on a limited budget.
My dreams are also my artists' dreams and I hope that in the long run this book series will become so successful that one day we can meet at San Diego Comic Con!
Last, marketing/promotion is a black hole for money, but it is a necessary evil, or else who would know about this project? Marketing costs include giving copies to libraries, travelling to give free talks at conventions & libraries, printing up materials (bookmarks, posters), creating a media package, paying for kickstarter fees, etc.; the list can go on forever!
If this Kickstarter is successful, your pledges will go towards:
• Editing & Formatting services
• Fulfilling incentives (printing books, shipping & handling, etc)
• Book Cover Design
• Promo & Marketing
If the goal is not met, then kickstarter will not collect your money and it's game over for this campaign and it is considered a failure in crowd funding.
However, if the goal is exceeded, as the creator of this campaign, I will keep adding new "stretch goals" incentives. Think of it as unlocking levels to get more presents in the end for everyone!
Kick It Forward
If this kickstarter initiative is successful, I pledge to kick it forward and donate back 5% post finished project amount to other projects on kickstarter.
Please refer to side panel on the right for awesome prizes at each level. At certain levels of sponsorship, names will be listed on my website at various "Chi levels".
Incentives include books, bookmarks, posters, maps, t-shirts, custom storybooks, personal portraits and passes to a convention book launch!
Click on the images below to lead you to a visual grid & bigger jpeg of all the incentives at each level.
Good Karma To You!
Thank you, thank you, thank you, for supporting this project. I hope you have a blast reading this story as it was so much fun to write. I also truly hope to come to know you as a reader and a friend.
Risks and challenges
There are many risks and challenges in self-publishing a book. Self-publishing, unlike rumors about how easy it is to do; is quite difficult and expensive. That's because the author becomes the publisher and has to hire artists, professional editing services, formatting services, cover designers, along with doing their own marketing/promo.
I believe I can overcome some of these self-publishing issues through opportunities like Kickstarter to help fund some of these costs and knowing that I've spent a lot of time looking all over the world to form a great team to finish this book, from editing to artwork in order to create an awesome product!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
