The Antithesis Deck
Antithesis is a new deck of playing cards lavishly illustrated by Seattle artist and designer Adam Valmassoi. This is a standard deck of playing cards in which every element is being completely redesigned. Adam has infused the set with his signature style, drawing on the ancient mythology and mystical symbolism which has informed and shaped his human journey.
The United States Playing Card Company
The Antithesis Deck will be printed by the United States Playing Card Company which is known worldwide as the printer of Bicycle, Bee, and many other high quality brands. No detail will be overlooked in the development of these cards. It's our desire to create something you will cherish and enjoy sharing and showing off for many years.
Incentives & Stretch Goals
In addition to the decks of cards, we're offering shirts and posters of some of the Antithesis card designs. If there is enough interest in the project, we will introduce some special items we've prepared - custom wooden display stands, commemorative wooden boxes, and ceramic poker chips, for example. Some of the items we've prepared will be limited in quantity and only sold during this fundraising effort.
Adam Valmassoi is a designer and artist born in Detroit, MI and now based out of Seattle, WA. He has a background in Industrial Design, and years of experience developing products for companies all around the world. He is an entrepreneur at heart, and has over the last year begun his own design firm. Most of his professional work has been commercial in nature, and recently he has begun to explore more free forms of artistic expression.
Adam's illustration style is incredibly detailed and playfully erratic. To get a glimpse of his recent progression artistically, you might take a look at his instagram profile instagram.com/FrozeLake or browse his website at FrozeLake.com. The playing card format has been an exercise in applying boundaries and structure to this style.
Why Playing Cards?
Playing cards are ubiquitous. They are woven through the history of many cultures, and used by people of all ages for a variety of purposes. The playing card format provides a wonderful opportunity for an artist to share a large collection of work with a wide audience in a way that is attractive, portable, functional, and fun.
Buying original artwork is expensive, as each piece is the culmination of so many hours of an artist's time. Owning art is inaccessible to many people because of the hefty price. Even print collecting is a rather expensive hobby. But with a deck of playing cards, we have the opportunity to offer roughly twenty complete pieces of art at a price that anyone can afford. We're very excited about the opportunity to put the outpouring of Adam's head and heart into so many hands!
(Note: The final poster designs will be based on the final deck design which may change during the campaign. For example, the new two way card back revealed on 2/24 would replace the previous design for Poster A)
The Antithesis Story
The Antithesis Deck is an expression of years of exploration in philosophical and metaphysical studies of the past, both ancient and more recent. Conceptually, it revolves around themes of life and death. Death is a somewhat taboo subject in the modern Western world where many strive for happiness and life always. But in a very real sense death, darkness, and defeat are as much a part of life as birth, light, and victory.
These ideas have been around for thousands of years. They are ingrained in our shared human experience, in the universe itself, and will continue as long as the world remains in its current form.
Creating Antithesis has required a thoughtful revisiting of these things and provided an outlet for sharing them with those who appreciate their manifestation through art.
The Antithesis Deck makes creative use of the mirrored 2-way design of the classic playing card by slightly altering each side of the mirrored cards to represent the duality of life and death. One side manifests life and abundance while the other reveals entropy, the eventual decay from complexity to chaos.
Our intention has been to create playing cards which accomplish several goals at once. We want them to be aesthetically beautiful, inspire thoughtful reflection, and of course, perform magnificently as top cards for casual gameplay.
To add individual items to any reward tier simply increase your pledge manually by the amounts listed below. When the campaign is complete you will be asked via survey to identify which items you have added.
Note: Designs for the Antithesis Deck are a work in progress, and will evolve a bit during the campaign. In this way, backing our Kickstarter project is a bit different than ordering a pre-made product. We hope you'll enjoy witnessing and being part of this process.

Risks and challenges
Our primary challenge is the obvious one - namely, raising the funds necessary to print the Antithesis Deck. We've worked tirelessly to eliminate all other unknown factors, so as long as no sudden catastrophe strikes in Kentucky (where the USPCC is located) or Seattle (where we are now), these cards will soon be a reality!
Together, Michael and Adam have extensive experience managing and executing large detailed projects involving multimedia content creation, shipping products, online marketing, and well, all the basic aspects of running a campaign like this. We also have a good base of friends and family supporting us.
We've been in contact with the team at the United States Playing Card Company for many months. We've been meticulous about learning every detail involved in printing the cards. The USPCC has already reviewed our preliminary digital files and indicated that we've prepared them correctly.
Michael works as a business model and crowd funding consultant and has helped several other creators execute successful projects. We've also consulted several other artists who have successfully executed similar campaigns on Kickstarter and they've reassured us we're doing everything right!
We intend to be transparent and in frequent communication with our backers throughout this campaign and during the manufacturing and fulfillment phases. We'll share a full and interesting account of the project for all who may enjoy seeing what goes on behind the scenes.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
