Fantasy fans, fellow writers, artists, gryfon and animal lovers and winged spirits at heart, let's go on an adventure!
Some Recent Developments:
If you're here at the last minute, deciding whether or not to pledge, now's the time! Whether you came from Deviantart, Facebook, Fur Affinity, 'Ending Soon' on Kickstarter or faraway lands unknown, it is not too late to get your signed, first edition, hardback copy of Song of the Summer King-- and other awesome rewards. Just glance slightly to your right. Yeeeah.
Then read about the press coverage, the stretch goals, and more, all below.
And if you're new, check out those rewards under the $1,000 pledge level. Every backer will be entered for TWO chances to win those rewards. Every. Backer.
I don't think I'll sleep much tonight. See you in the morning!
Prints of the beautiful cover art are still up for grabs at the next-up pledge levels:
As well as original art by Yours Truly, to your specifications, for $100 and higher! Samples:
And here's what happened before...
We made $8,000!!
All right wow. You guys are serious. Seriously supportive! You outdid even my optimistic ambitions, and now I'm getting questions about a $10,000 stretch goal. Incredible. I'm absolutely out of my mind.
If we're able to hit $10k by Monday, that completely open up my options for heavier paper stock, foil stamping on the spine AND the front, glossy metallic letters on the cover, as well as a professional's eye on the interior layout to make sure everything looks beautiful. And by beautiful, I mean looks like it was turned out by DAW, Randomhouse or Penguin. To name a few.
These dollars will also give me a boost to invest in Book 2. If we hit $10k, I will also keep every Kickstart Backer on record and offer a very special discount to you on the next book as soon as it becomes available.
You guys are too much.
I'm so excited that we're over halfway there with so much time to go, here's some THINGS.
To my international backers (wow, thank you!) If you want to pledge for the hardback, please pledge at $35 and don't worry about adding an additional $10 for shipping, as with the other rewards. This will get you the bookmarks, also, since they don't cost extra to ship. Any questions, send me a note!
An Exciting Change...PLEASE READ! Anyone who pledges at the $75 dollar level and higher will have the option to receive either a second copy of Song of the Summer King for a loved one (as listed), OR a physical copy of the second book in the trilogy, before the official release date. (Estimated delivery, December 2013).
Furthermore... Anyone who pledges at that $59 level and higher will receive the e-book of the second book in the trilogy before the official release.
And Remember... If we reach funding early, everyone at the $59 level and higher will receive the beautiful mini print of "Shard Rising," signed by Jennifer Miller!
Last Thing For Now: If (aw heck, let's say "when") we exceed the funding goal, everyone will get the beautiful mini comic by Akreon and Tanathe included in their e-book!
And in case you missed the last update... Remember that if we are able to exceed funding and reach $8,000 dollars, every backer at every level (that means you!) will have two chances to win one of the $1,000 pledge reward bundles. I would just love to give those away, there's so much cool stuff! Everyone has been so amazing at spreading the word and getting others on board. Let's keep this going!
Fair winds all!
The Gryfon's Eye View
This project is to fund the printing of the special edition, hardback version of my debut novel, The Song of the Summer King. I have invested my personal funds, time and sweat in the creation, professional editing and marketing of this book, and I want to see nothing less than a collector's item for the first edition printing.
These funds are specifically for the printing of the hardback, not the costs of editing, artwork, promotions or advertising (that money is my own, already invested in the project!)
High quality printing costs more than you might think. Yes, there are wonderful Print on Demand services out there, many of which I have already researched. But a beautifully bound book with foil lettering on the spine, a silky, matte finish dust jacket and touchable, sustainably printed pages--a treasure of a book you can cuddle up with and enjoy again and again . . .
Well, that's where you come in.
The Low Dive...
So what's this book about? First, here's the "back cover" blurb:
Shard is a gryfon in danger. He and other young males of the Silver
Isles are old enough to fly, hunt, and fight. Old enough to be threats
to their ruler, the red gryfon king. They must prove themselves worthy and loyal in order to remain with the pride.
In the midst of the dangerous initiation hunt, Shard takes the unexpected advice of a strange she-wolf who seeks him out, and hints that Shard's past isn’t all that it seems. To learn his past, Shard must abandon the future he wants and make allies of those the gryfons call enemies.
When the gryfon king declares open war on the wolves, it throws Shard’s past and uncertain future into the turmoil between.
Now with battle lines drawn, Shard must decide whether to fight beside his king . . . or against him.
And now, a little about me...
I've been writing since I was little. In 6th grade math I would scribble stories in my notebook any time the teacher darkened the room to work on the projector (sorry for that, Mrs. B!) I've written several works of novel-length fiction, putting in my "10,000 hours" of practice, but nothing I wanted to publish. I'm a member of the Society for Children's Book Writers & Illustrators and I work hard to attend conferences, seminars and workshops to hone my skills to a truly professional level. This is not a hobby, this is my career!
The Song of the Summer King is my masterpiece to date, and the book in which I've chosen to invest my time and money to launch my professional name. It is the first in a planned trilogy, in a world I will be inviting readers to return to for years to come.
Your pledges will not only give me the wings I need to have the hardback version beautifully printed, but will become seed money for my publishing company to print books two, three, and beyond!
Into the Forest (or, some questions you might Frequently Ask)
Technically, is this self-publishing? Yes indeed. Or you could say I own my own publishing company. In fact, I do! It's called Five Elements Press, and my long term goals include not only many more books in my gryfon world, but publishing the works of other aspiring writers and artists.
Ohhh, so you couldn't get it published by a big publisher or accepted by an agent? Not the case at all. I never submitted this book for traditional publication. Many writers are choosing to self-publish these days because of changing trends in the business. Also, this is not just a way to rush my book to print. I've taken two years to properly write, edit and polish this book. I would feel confident sending it to any professional in the industry, if I was taking the traditional route.
Solid advice from professional mentors and friends led me to self publishing. It also gives me more creative control (for instance, choosing my own cover artist!), and I'm a control-freak Leo, so this way, everyone's happy.
Why do you spell "gryfon" in a funny way? Because it makes me happy.
Will the e-book and physical book be offered for traditional sale outside of Kickstarter? Yes and yes, but buying after the Kickstarter campaign means you lose out on the cool schwag. The e-book will officially release in July, but Kickstarter backers get it in June, and all hardbacks will be signed by the author!
Re-printing of the hardback edition completely depends on sales and costs. It may be that it goes to paperback after Kickstarter and you won't see the hardback again until I print and sell the trilogy in a beautiful bundle. This is a collector's, first edition item!
Tell me about that AMAZINGLY EPIC cover art?! That is the work of one of my favorite artists, Jennifer Miller. Her work is magical and draws the eye, and it was vital for me to invest in beautiful imagery for the cover, by someone who is already known and adored by gryfon lovers all over the world (literally).
What about the incredible music in your video? That is the awesomeness of composer Ryan Taubert, who I found through SoundCloud. I have his permission for these beautiful pieces, and another which will feature in my "book trailer" later this month.
Why gryfons? Because gryfons are excellent creatures who need more time in the spotlight. In this story there are also wolves, ravens, dragons, owls ... and no humans. I hope for this world to become a wonderful playground for fellow animal and fantasy lovers everywhere.
'Artwork by the Author' is a reward for some pledges. Can I see samples of your artwork? Of course! On Deviantart I go by 'theatrenewt' ... and here's my page.
Sounds neat. But I don't know about giving you my money yet. Can I read a sample of the book? Naturally! The first chapter of the book is available on my blog, riiiiiight here.
Does anything cool happen if we meet funding early, or exceed it? Ohhh yes indeed. First, if we meet funding early, every donor at the $59 level and higher will receive a mini print of the first "concept" art of Shard, signed by Jennifer Miller. That gorgeous image is here.
If we Exceed funding, new rewards will be unlocked, beautiful images revealed by some of our favorite artists, and more fun than you could shake a gryfon at (actually, you should never shake a gryfon).
Any other questions? Feel free to ask in the comments, or if you're bashful, send me an email!
Thank you so much for checking out my project. I truly hope to come to know you as a reader and a friend. Fair winds!
