The above stretch goals are all additional elements that we will add to the film; everything from making the miniatures more interesting and complex to little mini-sequences that will fold into the story.

Centuries ago, a desperate battle left a village wasted, a new bride dead, and two mortal enemies dependent on each other for survival. Forgotten amongst the crumbling ruins, our two heroes have eked out a meager existence, each responsible for feeding the other.
One fateful day, a villager trespasses into Frank's hunting grounds. The resulting 'harvest' provides Zed with a full tummy and sets the entire town on a course of bloody retribution.
"We open on Frankenstein's Monster in a HUGE rotten castle..."
How do you tell that story if you are an independent filmmaker in the Pacific Northwest? Our answer: Puppets.
We can create our characters exactly as we see in our heads, mis-stitched eyeballs, gaping head wounds, and all. We can take our time making sure each shot reaches its full potential. Our characters can chop, maim, kill and be killed in the fantastic locations in which they belong.
The vast majority of 'puppet films' also have human actors in them; far fewer are done using only puppets. We were shocked to discover that, according to Wikipedia, Frank & Zed will be the first classic glove-puppet feature film to be made in this millenium.*1
Of course, the price you pay is that every shot becomes a special effect!
There's nothing more rewarding nor challenging for us than making an inanimate object come to life; it's just magic when it works. To do that and to scare people is the greatest thrill we've found in the world of filmmaking.
We love practical effects. (You don't get into horror to play with CG blood.) The visceral realism and happy accidents that occur bring the film to life in a way that is worth the extra time and effort.
We've also committed to hand-building the entire world of Frank & Zed. Whether it's constructing a silicone puppet from scratch or re-purposing an old candle holder to create a stained glass window, we want every element on screen to be something you've never seen before.
We've completed 90% of the film. However, we still have major elements to complete like the miniatures, score, and special effect insert shots.
We are asking for support to finish the major components of the film left to do: the large-scale miniatures, score, specialty inserts shots, color-correction, and sound.
The Dark Maker's Castle needs 12 gargoyles. Pledge at the Totem Gargoyle level and we will create a one-of-a-kind miniature stone creature bearing the totem of your choice. When filming wraps we'll send you the little demon to stand guard over your abode.
Bonus - Totem Gargoyles now come with a production still of the gargoyle signed by Director Jesse Blanchard & Sculptor Erin DeBray.
Everything in the world of Frank & Zed is handmade. Add $15 to any pledge level and we will include a prop (chunk of puppet, stained glass, gear, squirrel head) to your pledge.
To our Existing Backers:
Thank you so much for your support so far.
1- Is this really the first puppet film in 30 years?: As far as we know, this is the first feature-length film (60+ mins) to be made using classic glove-style puppetry since Peter Jackson's Meet the Feebles. The few puppet feature films that have been made have either had human actors (i.e. The Muppets) or were made with marionettes (Team America) or other forms of puppetry. (Source, wikipedia)
2- Share the Project and Get a Storyboard info: Use #FrankAndZed then let us know in the comments below or via Facebook that you helped spread the word. Storyboards will be added to pledges while supplies last.
Risks and challenges
There is no shortage of Risks & Challenges in this film. We know, because we have been traveling this road for four years.
- Challenges -
Finding music that will match the level of detail and craftsmanship of the fim. Ideally, it will be handmade like the rest of the film.
The remaining shots are almost all incredibly complex. They include the large miniatures, each of which will have small elements puppeteered within as well as fire and smoke effects,
Although many of the tasks before us are daunting, we take great comfort in what we've achieved so far.
We hope you will join us for the last leg of this journey.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
