A play that is a mix of Outkast/August Wilson/BBKing, and the Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy! It's FENCES-2013. It's crazy good!
We want to start by saying that we don't not recieve any money unless we reach our goal or $8,000. This is a completed, full-length play. All of the music is complete and it has had two staged readings in Atlanta, GA. If you want to know more about the writer or his motivation for the play, click the news link below.
A phone call….a woman waits…wondering which male voice awaits her…Is it the voice of her past…the voice of the future…Montana sits…stares…contemplates…Thus SLUM BEAUTIFUL begins.
SLUM BEAUTIFUL is a play that follows a woman awaiting a phone call, while managing her relationship between two men that mark her past and her future. Montana Maxwell is a smart newlywed struggling to keep her bills paid and her husband from driving them into bankruptcy. Pratt is the husband she’s always wanted, or so she thought.Pratt believes in their love until he discovers that Montana has been living a double life. Waitress by day, brothel by night. Not only that, the man that hired her is Pratt’s worst enemy, Wole. Wole is Montana’s sexy but dangerous new friend that returned home from prison. He’s loaded with money and offers her things that Montana never dreamed of.But in Wole’s world, nothing comes free: even if he says it does.
SLUM BEAUTIFUL is a story filled with laughter and the blues. The play is one of cycle of five plays that chronicles Southwest Atlanta over the five decades between the civil rights movement and the second election of President Obama. Each story is a fictional representation of the African-American experience during the 1960’s until present day.SLUM BEAUTIFUL is funny, positive, and wonderfully written.
All of the money raised from Kickstarter will be used for costumes, set design, actor contracts, theater rentals, and advertisement.
Projected Cost to Produce SLUM BEAUTIFUL:
*$5,000 for summer interns.
*$15,000 for theater rental space.
*$10,000 for set design and directors
*$10,000 for print advertisement, commercials, and billboards
*$5,000 for the Actors and Director's Salary
* Any money over $40,000 will go towards paying the actors better salaries, hiring a live band for every performance, hiring a top notch set designer, signing an amazing sound and lighting director, and signing the best actors and directors in the city.
The bare bones cost of the show is $40,000.
Raising over $50,000 will gurantee a well known actor will be cast as one of the leads.
Raising over $70,000 will gurantee that the show will go on tour. The cities that we want to travel to are Baltimore, Chicago, Memphis, and New York.
Raising over $100,000 will give us a chance to cast an A-list actor to be a part of the cast and tour Chicago, Baltimore, Memphis, Dallas, Los Angeles, and New York.
The most important thing to us right now is marketing and advertisement. Through commericals on radio, tv, and the web we hope that everyone in the city of Atlanta will know our story and why they should want to come out and see this play.

Risks and challenges Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The biggest challenge to producing a play when you are new to the industry is developing an audience. People like to know a lot about the actors, writers, and producers of a play before they decide to go out a see it. So the biggest risk is creating a show and no one shows up to watch it. The biggest risk for anyone just starting out in theater is opening the doors and the house is empty. Through advertisement, social media, and lots of press releases we can build the audience that every producer needs and wants.
The play SLUM BEAUTIFUL is about a working class girl that decides to go after her dream. Being from East Point, she is really close to people that can open doors for her. The neighborhood is filled with people that have real connections in the music industry and phonies. But in this town, it's almost impossible to tell the difference between the real-deal and the con-man.
