Our Kickstarter campaign is over! It's been an amazing month and we’re looking forward to being able to put a pair of Carbonshades in the hands of everyone who supported this project!

After seeing the countless studies showing the harmful effects of artificial evening light exposure and its detrimental impact on sleep and general health, we started looking for a pair of glasses to block blue light. It wasn't long before we realized there was nothing available that looked good enough to wear out in public, so we ended up wearing nothing. We then noticed that the companies that made these unsightly products didn't even disclose important technical lens data! We realized there had to be a better way than this to keep our sleep in check.
We were working with our manufacturer to develop the right lens technology, thinking we wanted an orange lens because that was the standard. However every ‘blue-blocking’ lens our manufacturer showed us wasn’t effectively blocking blue light. Some lenses didn’t block the entire range of harmful light while others would allow as much as 10% light in at frequencies of peak sensitivity to melatonin suppression!
That’s when we realized none of the orange lenses looked good even in a nice frame, and this didn’t fit in with our vision of making a stylish product that people would want to wear out at night. That’s when we asked our manufacturer to try using red lenses from laser-grade eyewear instead.
The resulting product not only looked fantastic, but also blocked over 99.8% of the total light across the entire spectrum known to trigger melatonin suppression (400-570 nm), far surpassing the capabilities of yellow or orange-lensed glasses. And thus, Carbonshade was born.
There’s no point in trying to block artificial light if it kills your social life. We made Carbonshade glasses fashionable so you and your friends will love them. Our tasteful, stylish designs give you the freedom to wear our glasses anywhere, whether it be at the dinner table with your family or downtown at the bar with your friends. Carbonshade glasses elevate any outfit to the next level and work for any occasion.
Our motto is Sun Down, Carbonshades Up. Carbonshade glasses are designed to be worn in the evening prior to going to bed. It's in these crucial hours that we’re bombarded with artificial light that tricks our brain into thinking it’s still daytime. This shifts our circadian rhythm, resulting in poor sleep and health problems.
Don't think this is only smartphones and laptops—every single lightbulb is just as harmful, and the problem is only getting worse with increased usage of energy-efficient and blue-rich LED lights.
Long gone are the nights of being blinded by bright lights or experiencing eye-strain from your laptop. Just put on a pair of Carbonshade glasses and enjoy your evening the way you want to.
Our glasses are crafted with an aluminum alloy so they're far stronger than plastic. This allowed us to create the sleekest and most durable frames possible. The build quality of Carbonshade glasses is immediately noticeable the moment you pick a pair up.
We choose polycarbonate for the lens material as it had the highest impact resistance as well as the greatest tailorability of optical transmission properties.
Spring-loaded hinges allow the arms of the glasses to extend past the standard open position so that one size fits all, for every style.
Just in case you still aren’t convinced, feel free to take a look at the research for yourself. This is just a small selection of the many studies evaluating the effects of artificial light and circadian disruption.
- Exposure to room light before bedtime suppresses melatonin onset and shortens (2011)
- Circadian disruption leads to insulin resistance and obesity (2013)
- Circadian disrupting exposures and breast cancer risk: a meta-analysis (2015)
Pledge now and we’ll send you a questionnaire the moment the campaign ends so you can let us know which style you want.
We have finalized designs for the glasses and need your help so we can start the first production-scale run with our manufacturer. We know once this process is started we can get our first batch of glasses well within 60 days, so we’re confident we will get them to you by May 2016.
Risks and challenges
We know our manufacturer can handle a large production run even if we reach our funding goal many times over. However, given the possibility that our campaign skyrockets and exceeds our manufacturer's capabilities, we may see some slight delays in getting all the glasses manufactured and shipped within our timeline.
During our sample production we ran into a small problem where the printed logo on the frame began to fade after heavy use. We are working with our manufacturer to fix this and aim to have our final logos laser-engraved. We also had a setback with the quality of the case and packaging, but you can rest assured that our final packaging will match the premium quality of the glasses.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
