"Dark Land of the Sun" is a 10 song album that began production in January 2011.
While driving down the road listening to Revolver by The Beatles, I thought to myself I'd like to have a Co-producer and I immediately called Luke Skaggs, who arranged and played violin parts on my initial EP, House On Fire. Luke and I agreed on engineer, Grant Harding to lead the recording sessions and the three of us began pre-production and contacting the right players for the album.
On January 4, we went into Skaggs Place Studios in Hendersonville, TN joined by Tim Morrison, Chad Lawson and David Curran to track 10 songs with the core band within four days.
The album started to take shape and some of the songs were accompanied with performances by Luke's Mom and Dad, Sharon White (along with The Whites) and Ricky Skaggs as well as my beautiful girlfriend, Bailey Cooke.
February followed with trips to Nashville to record some vocal overdubs and pedal steel playing by Tommy White of the Grand Ole Opry House Band. We then took the tracks back to North Carolina to work in Still Waters Audio for string sections arranged by Molly Skaggs and performed by Cellist Sarah Lynn Stephens and Luke Skaggs on violin.
We are currently in the mixing process and all of us are a little amazed at how wonderful the album is sounding. The rest of the mixing, mastering and printing will be done in the next month. The album includes the following songs, not necessarily in this order:
FYEO, Go Up North, My Name, Little Moon, Mile Long Driveway, Say You're Done With Me, Angel, Will You Be, I Might Learn & Falling.
Making this album has been more expensive than I expected but well worth the costs! Here is a breakdown of the cost so you'll know what you're supporting.
Studio time - $3600, Producers - $800, Engineers - $800, Musicians - $515, Travel and Catering - $1200, Mastering - $700, First CD pressing of the album, $2,125.
As you can see, the costs of the album add up and exceed what I'm asking for on Kickstarter. This album means enough to me that I'd pay for all of it, TWICE, if I had the money.
Thank you for supporting my album! I'm thrilled to share this music with you and I can guarantee that everyone involved has offered themselves wholeheartedly to make this album what it is. I'm proud to call it mine.
Special thanks to Josh Goleman and Paul Isabella for video and graphics.
