What am I doing now?
Ever since HIchop came out, I've had people asking -- will you do more songs?! I can finally tell you the answer is HIja'! (Yes!)
I'm going to go into a professional recording studio with professional musicians to record 4 pop songs that have been translated entirely into Klingon! (Or are they in the original Klingon... that's for you to decide!)
I've assembled some of the finest Klingon translators in the business (yes, they exist!) as well as some of my favorite musicians that I've worked with over the years. I also have an outstanding recording studio that I've used in the past for more "mainstream Terran" recording projects -- check out the non-Klingon track of me singing Chain of Fools below. This is the same recording studio and quality I plan to bring to these Klingon recordings.
That leads me to.... the bommey (songs)!
Currently, I have the following songs slated for recording:
- Sixpence None The Richer - Kiss Me -- Re-record the original Klingon pop song with musicians in a professional studio.
- Britney Spears - Hit Me, Baby, One More Time -- The original Pop Princess is getting a Pop Warrior makeover.
- Celine Dion - My Heart Will Go On -- Do you even need to ask why? Near, far, the 8-chambered Klingon heart beats on.
- Disney's Frozen - Let It Go -- The Ice Empress of Rura Penthe is about to take the mic. I couldn't believe my luck when this translation fell in my lap.
What do I need to make this happen?
Studio time (6 hours = $120), musicians (3 = $360), translators ($250), digital distribution package ($50), CD duplication and full-color 2-sided jacket packaging (Limited Edition, 100 copies = $450), and the acquisition of the legal rights to all the songs ($$$$!!!!). These are covers and translations. I need to make sure I'm doing right by the original artists.
The more we get the more we can do!
I will be so excited just to get those 4 songs down. Just in case the world is prepared for more, we have stretch goals! For each song, the translators need to get paid and rights need to be acquired.
If we hit ---
$2,300 -- Additional Recording -- Bad Romance, Lady Gaga -- all levels $5 & above will receive.
$2,700 -- Additional Recording -- Love Is A Battlefield, Pat Benatar -- All levels $5 & above will receive.
$3,700 -- UPGRADE PACKAGING! Limited Edition CD's will come in a full color 6-panel fold out CD wallet instead of just the 2-sided CD jacket.
$4,500 -- Additional 100 CD's Duplicated (2-sided full-color jackets only) -- so that I can take this show on the road and bring the wonder of Klingon pop to conventions!
Who am I?
Qapla'! My name is Jen Usellis-Mackay and I'm a singer and actress in the Chicagoland area. I had the good fortune to perform in A Klingon Christmas Carol in Chicago for two years. Due to my work with that show, I ended up working with Improvised Star Trek singing Sixpence None The Richer's "Kiss Me" entirely in Klingon. It was so much fun, we made a music video and got featured on Conan's TeamCoco site, BuzzFeed, The Mary Sue, Blastr... just to namedrop a few....
Why, in the name of Kahless, am I doing this?
Over the last 4 years, the Trek fandom has been so incredibly supportive of me. As an actor, I've always gravitated to the quirky projects and when I first got involved in Klingon Christmas Carol, it was for that reason. Two years later, I was hooked. I'm now a member of the Klingon Assault Group and just love the people I've met over the years that are so excited about the Trek universe and the Klingon language. They're the reason projects like this are possible. This project is the perfect marriage of all the things I'm passionate about -- singing, acting, comedy, and geekdom. It's a labor of geeky wonderful love for the fans.
I plan to bring the years of experience I have singing in bands, recording, and performing to do a con-language CD that is both legitimately good musically with tongue-firmly-planted-in-cheek fun! Klingons fight hard, play hard, and love hard and these love songs in the original Klingon prove it!
Now is not the time to be Ferengis! Let's honor the mighty Klingon Empire in glorious song! Qapla' batlh je! tlhIngan maH!

Risks and challenges
The main risk with this project is the possibility of not being able to acquire song rights. If I am unable to acquire those rights for any of the songs, I will need to look into songs that fall under the public domain and this will delay recording. I should know within 2 weeks of applying for the rights if they have been secured but the process can take upwards of 45 days which could delay the CD duplication process.
The CD duplication process should only take 2 weeks from time of ordering to my receiving them. From there, getting those items shipped out to backers will be the final hurdle. I have given myself solid time frames based on turnarounds from all of my vendors and my process schedule. In an effort to keep costs low, I am keeping the CD's as limited edition and I am also not shipping international due to costs and past issues I've had with international shipping.
Regardless of a successful Kickstarter, the 4 main songs will be recorded. The success of the Kickstarter will ensure they see the light of day.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
