Finally, it's time for the third issue of DUNCE starring this ratpack:
I'm ready as never before ... After quitting my day-job in October 2017, I'm now working full-time on Dunce (and other fun comics/drawing projects that may appear). The first two issues of Dunce have both been funded with the help from Patreon and Kickstarter, hopefully you guys will stay with me for this one too. I suspect it's going to be a good one :)
"One of the smartest and most original Norwegian cartoons that has debuted in recent times." Serienett.no (Norwegian comics blog)
"Affectionate, heart-warming and most importantly funny (...) Made me laugh out loud, something comics rarely do"
Splank (Comics blog, UK)
"Like Watterson or Thompson, Styve’s simplified drawings are enhanced by his skillful use of traditional media."
"Read it. It is good."
Billd & Bubbla (Swedish comic journal)
Winner: Norwegian newspaper Dagbladet's strip competition 2016.
Winner: Norwegian Pondus-price 2017.
What is it?
DUNCE is the name of my autobiographic comic strip that has been running in Norwegian newspapers and magazines since early 2017. It's sort of a modern day slice-of-life-strip, but it's also a personal tribute to the old, classic comic strips that I grew up with and adored.
Doing a daily strip can be nerve wracking, but it's also a huge learning experience. The Dunce universe seems to develop in every strip, every panel. The main character is the pointy hat guy (that is somewhat similar to myself?), but I quickly learned that these other characters also want to take the lead. For instance the coworker (a fish!), the eight year old son and the red haired girl living next door.
I'm translating the strips to English as I go along, and as long as there are Kickstarters willing to support it, I release these self-pubished zines!
If you missed out on the first two issues, they are still available. Choose the Dunce Bundle pledge and get all three!
I love drawing the old fashioned way with ink, nibs and brushes. For those of you who appreciate a piece of original art, to hang on your wall (or to keep in your collection), I've added the possibility to pledge for Dunce with an original drawing. The motif will be based on a panel from the book, choose one of the originals pledges.
I've skipped the art prints and the stickers this time, they did delay the whole shipping process quite a lot on Dunce 2. Instead I'm now paying some brilliant artists to do their own Dunce-interpretations, their ALTERNATE COVERS. First one out is done by the brilliant Meekis (Ottawa, Canada), an artist working on the upcoming animated Hilda-series by Luke Pearson(!).
I intend to get Dunce 3 printed and shipped to you as soon as possible after this Kickstarter-campaign is over.
Risks and challenges
The only risk I can see is that something unforeseen happens and the shipping of the comic will have to be delayed. In that case, I will keep backers informed.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
