Everybody hates blowing up anything inflatable, be it air mattresses or pool toys. They demand us to bite into flimsy PVC valves and to exhaust our lungs. They threaten to ruin our supposedly nice day at the beach or camping ground right from the start. – No more. Hello Fluxbag!
From your lungs, you can exhale up to 3.5 liters of air in a single breath. That´s nothing for a 150 litre air mattress and makes inflating things through tiny valves such a pain. Fluxbag, with its 200-litre volume and 50 cm wide opening, uses the Bernoulli effect that together with that one breath also propels the surrounding air into the bag.
Connect the Fluxbag to your inflatable. Just blow into it once or twice – and the Fluxbag is full of air. Close the opening and capture the air. Then roll the Fluxbag up, push it down, lay down or kneel on it and push that air into your inflatable using your body weight. Voilà - you´ve fluxed it!
The Fluxbag is only 1/5 the weight of a foot pump, and less than 10% of the volume.
It is easy to pack up and comes with a pouch just 9 x 19 cm (3.5 x 7.5 inch) big, the total weight is about 100 g/3.5 oz. Perfect for packing lightly.
Most likely: Yes.
Don´t worry, Fluxbag supports 95% of valves that are commercially available. The three nozzles that come with every Fluxbag fit standard valves from 5mm up to 10mm inner diameter and also 20 mm flat valves – and via a little connector tube also all 17mm screw-cap valves like they come with ThermaRest mattresses. This is basically all that is in the market. So: As long as your valve looks not completely unlike the images above, it should flux.
German engineering it is.. Fluxbag uses high-quality and lightweight PU-coated rip-stop nylon that is nearly indestructible.
Seams are double-stitched and reinforced with hot-glue seam seal tape. Connector and nozzle parts are made from impact-resistant PE plastic. Also, the nozzle is modular, i.e. you can switch it with just one click. In case you lose it, you can order replacements from our online store later.
Ever hassled to deflate a mattress or toy with a common non-return valve?
What used to take ages can now be easily sped up just by inserting the detached Fluxbag nozzle into the valve. The nozzle opens the small plastic hinge deep inside the valve and lets the air escape freely. Result: Much easier and faster deflating.
Every Fluxbag pack contains
- 1 Fluxbag
- 1 storage pouch
- 3 exchangeable valve adapters
Jens came up with the idea for the Fluxbag and leads the project. He currently focusses on marketing & sales. Jens has a background in Business & Economics, is a multiple founder and used to work as a startup consultant. Here is his consulting company website and there his LinkedIn.
Lucas is in charge of our design engineering and also handles our supply chain. He comes from a family of fashion designers and artists, trained as a cabinet maker and studied Architecture. Here´s his LinkedIn.
Together we are in the process of setting up HILFE Industries a product accelerator, and we work full time on Fluxbag, our first product. So, no distractions and less risk.
Cheap shipping worldwide with DHL
Many exciting Kickstarters are spoiled by high international shipping costs. To make Fluxbag affordable for everyone we negotiated a special deal with Deutsche Post DHL and offer fast shipping worldwide for just 5 EUR, about US$ 5.50.
Why we relaunched & what´s new
This is our second Kickstarter for the Fluxbag. We had launched and cancelled the first one in July/early August 2016. Here is the link to the cleaned up old campaign site.
Why did we cancel? The old camapaign had 74 backers and raised 2k EUR in about 20 days – far from the funding goal of 20k EUR. This funding goal was unreasonably high and overambitious. What´s more, we did not really understand how Kickstarter works, underestimated the momentum of the amazing Kickstarter-community and overestimated how the press reacts to Kickstarter projects these days. Our launch was premature, too hasty and not well prepared. Our communication with backers was below average. We felt it was impossible to catch up with all these mistakes and reach our funding goal, so we cancelled the campaign.
What has changed? Nothing much when it comes to the product, which is all set and manufacturing ready. We lowered the funding goal drastically to EUR 4.000 and extended the campaign duration to 45 days. The lower funding goal was made possible by replacing a very peculiar custom molded part with a standard OEM part that we can source much more cheaply without spending thousands of Euros for an injection molding tool. Furthermore, we received a bulk order for 250 Fluxbags so our first production run will be quite cost-efficient even with a lower volume from Kickstarter.
Risks and challenges
Risks & challenges we are facing are the result of our project´s status, which is as following as of 10 August 2016:
(1) Our product design has been prototyped in several iterations and is fully functional. Thus we will not have to change the functional design of our product.
(2) We have produced a detailed bill of materials, cost calculations and established supplier relations for 100% of all parts. Cost overruns endangering the project´s shipping are thus highly unlikely.
(3) We have a manufacturing ready design and made production samples thus ensuring the manufacturability of Fluxbag within our cost limits.
Our strategies to avoid risks & challenges:
(1) Fluxbag is modular, not much unlike a modern car. We source standard, OEM and custom parts from specialized sources and have them assembled in a simple, straightforward process.
(2) We source redundantly. If a specific supplier relationship goes south in the manufacturing stage, we will be able to fall back to alternative sources rather quickly.
(3) We leverage our professional knowledge. Jens has been consulting dozens of startups and innovative products and founded several companies himself before. We are aware of typical risks and uncertainties when it comes to building an idea into an actual product.
(4) We established sound project management. Although we have yet room for improvement here, we are confident to say that our project management´s quality is above average.
Nevertheless we are facing risks when it comes to completing and shipping our product.
Risk of completion
Our project is highly dependent on the availability of the team, in particular Jens. Should Jens unexpectedly drop dead or become seriously ill all over sudden, we will likely not be able to complete the project in the planned time frame or even not at all.
Risk of delays
Naturally, we have not yet bindingly contracted the parts and services that go into Fluxbag. Although we have obtained offers which include prices and lead times, there is no guarantee that our suppliers will be willing or able to fulfil these orders when we actually place them once we reach our funding goal.
