We want to host an awesome Ball Jointed Doll convention in St. Louis, and we need your help!

Pre-register here! Pre-register NOW!

8/28 Edit From the convention committee:

Play with us all weekend!
The St. Louis BJD Convention is a three-day EVENT!
On Friday, November 16th, get settled into our official hotel and then come out for our official Meet-n-Greet Happy Hour! Bring your dolls and meet our guests and socialize with the rest of the members. This event is exclusive to members!

On Saturday, November 17th, take the shuttle from our official hotel to our Programming Site! Saturday is devoted to programming that includes hands-on workshops, contests, lecture/demos, discussion panels, book signings, the dealer's room, and catered meals including our awards banquet. After the banquet, take the free shuttle back to your room at our official hotel.

But wait, there's more!
Sunday morning it's time to pack up your hotel room, but be sure to meet us for the exclusive Brunch event! We will be hosting a special Dolly Brunch event showcasing one of St. Louis's finest locations.

The Friday and Sunday events are exclusively available to the members of the convention. You must be a member to attend these events with our guests!

Membership Information:
Memberships are available at the pre-registration rate of $75 exclusively though our fundraiser on Kickstarter. After the Kickstarter closes, memberships will be available for a higher rate. [Need to confirm rate. (a rate of $100 through September 30th, and $150 thereafter, I think.)]

Exclusive Convention Doll Update:
Sarah Seiter is doing a limited run of 90 dolls for our event. If you want to order Spark the Mini-Dragon, you must also purchase a convention membership. We also must have our pre-orders for the conventions dolls in advance.

What if it doesn't go?
Our convention will go forward whether the Kickstarter reaches its goal or not, but everyone who participates by pledging in the Kickstarter is guaranteed the pre-registration rate on all of the convention items. If you pre-register through Kickstarter at the $75 rate, your membership rate *will not go up* in September. Anyone who waits until after the Kickstarter to register for the convention will be charged the higher rate.

8/25 Edit: Check out the update tab to see pictures of the official convention doll!

Do you love Ball-Jointed Dolls? We do!

We live in St. Louis, MO, in the very heart of the United States. We know that there are many BJD enthusiasts all over the midwest, but most of the big doll conventions are held on the coasts or down south. We wanted to offer a Midwestern event that could attract everyone who loves ball-jointed dolls.

For our first year, we are going to host a one-day extravaganza on Saturday, November 17th, 2012. Our Chairman, Jenny Evans, has been involved with other conventions since the early 90's and has been the chairman of several local conventions. Between our various members, we have over 70 years of experience organizing and running events of various types such as SF/F conventions, Psychic Fairs, Renaissance Festivals, Educational seminars, Re-enactment events, Anime Conventions, and single-day experiences such as the Goblin Ball and the Mad Scientists' Tea Party.

Why a BJD Convention?

These dolls are popular among artists and creative people because they are perfectly customizable. We want to provide information and demonstrate the variety of creative projects that can be done with these dolls. Our programming schedule will be filled with many exciting artistic opportunities - for example, we are planning hands on workshops on doll costuming, customization, and face-ups, as well as several creative doll costuming contests with awesome prizes, and plenty of chances to see and show off beautiful ball-jointed dolls at the convention!

Guests!

  • Paulette Goodreau, award winning doll designer of both the Goodreau American Ball-Jointed Doll Company and the "Make it Mine" doll line.
  • Sarah Seiter, known online as the Mushroom Peddlar. She is providing a special edition doll just for our convention!
  • Allison Rasmussen, author of BJDs for Beginners (the blog and book) as well as the Fashion Doll Review.

We have confirmed three amazing guests, but flying them to our convention from all over the country will be expensive. If we exceed our goal, we can add additional special guests to our lineup, and get ready to make our convention bigger and better next year!

Food!

Because we are a one-day event, we're providing breakfast, a box lunch, and a dinner banquet for all our attendees at the facility so no one has to leave all the fun to eat. There will also be snacks and drinks available. All of our food will be sourced through local eateries and family-owned businesses to showcase the culinary talents here in St. Louis.

The Plan:

A convention requires some serious up-front moolah. We have deposits to make on the venue and catering contracts. We will need funding for materials costs for the workshops, travel expenses for our guests, publicity and printing costs of our program book… not to mention insurance and other considerations. This event is a prototype for the future, and we plan to build this into one of the biggest and best BJD conventions in the country! More money means a bigger convention. More money means bringing in doll artisans from other countries and having more hands-on workshops.

This is where YOU come in:

If you support our efforts to make a Midwestern Ball-Jointed Doll Convention a reality, we are offering great gifts to our contributors! Many of our committee and staff members are artists, crafters, and even award-winning costume designers. All of our supporters will be mentioned on our website and your names will go on our great big "Thank you" board at the convention.

If we exceed our goal:

The money will go toward making the convention larger and grander by bringing in additional guests, offering more prizes and give-aways, and even more food. If we really exceed our goal, any extra money will be put toward the 2013 convention for securing a new location and new guests.

FAQ

  • When you donate, make the donation amount the total amount of all the items you would like, and select the pre-registration item (or the limited item, if either apply). Then send us a message noting which additional items you would like, so we can lower the available amount if needed.

    Last updated:
  • At this time, Sarah Seiter has requested that the doll be kept as a surprise. We can tell you that it is a dragon (for the year of the dragon, our unofficial theme), and that it will be a limited edition, sold only for this convention. Pre-registering for the doll by early September is highly recommended so she knows how many to have made, so make sure to donate to the Kickstarter to ensure you get one!

    Last updated:
  • Absolutely! In fact, pre-registering with the Kickstarter is the best way to guarantee not only your registration for the convention, but also the convention doll, since pre-orders need to be sent out directly afterwords. Once the Kickstarter has ended, either way, we will notify all backers on how to pay for registration. If the Kickstarter succeeds, you'll be sent a notification from Kickstarter to pay through Amazon. If the Kickstarter doesn't succeed, we'll direct you to a new page on our website where you can pay through Paypal. We will also extend this invitation to those who pledged for items!
