I’m Jenn. For years, I’ve been a professional game designer and an avid amateur baker. Now, I’ve combined these two passions into one new, even bigger passion: edible games! I can’t wait to share them with you and the rest of the world.
What are edible games?
My edible games are a series of fabulous and delicious food experiences to play with friends and family. Think of it as "tasty treats meet good, old-fashioned fun". Some of them are sweet, others are savoury, and they all have one thing in common—you can eat the pieces. In fact, it’s required!
What do you do in an edible game?
You might be required to crack a secret code that’s baked into cream puffs; keep a straight face while eating something gross; conjure up a delectable morsel from a mishmash of ingredients; perform "sacred", food-related rituals; test your memory and taste buds; or even eat your vegetables!
And that's only half of the games you'll get in the Edible Games Cookbook. The food isn't just a delicious treat on the side, it's a vital part of playing the game.
How do I make an edible game?
I've made sure the recipes are easy to follow and will yield beautiful results in the hands of any home cook or baker. Each recipe has modifications: short cuts so you don't have to cook everything from scratch; and "long cuts" so if you want to do more, you can. Everyone can create these games regardless of their baking skill and how much time they want to spend in the kitchen.

For almost ten years, I've been professionally making games, first in my home country of Australia and now in the United States. I’ve worked on a range of digital and non-digital games including some big names like LA Noire, Gardens of Time, and Thimbleweed Park. In even more years as an amateur baker and cook, I’ve made roasts, curries, soups, beef Wellingtons, wedding cakes, ice creams, steamed puddings, and my “world famous” raspberry brownies.
I love experimenting and pushing the boundaries of game design, so about five years ago I decided to combine the two and started coming up with ways to make games out of food.
Since then, my edible games have been featured at festivals, conferences, conventions, and galleries. The Order of the Oven Mitt even won the prestigious IndieCade Interaction Award in 2016! But the unique nature of edible games means that I can only share them with people who can physically come to these events. That’s why I want to make this cookbook: so anyone who wants to play an edible game can do so, anytime and anywhere.
Creating a professional-quality cookbook, however, costs a lot of money — I should know, I've done the maths. I've put in a lot of time and money to get this far, but I can't finish it without help. After being part of the successful Thimbleweed Park Kickstarter, I realised that crowdfunding really works and that backers are actually lovely people to help you realise a dream.
That's why I'm here on Kickstarter: to get the funds I need to follow through on my dream of an amazing cookbook filled with delicious games for everyone.
The Edible Games Cookbook will be a beautiful, hardcover, full-colour, approximately 300-page printed book with recipes and rules for 12 unique, delightfully edible games. Download the sample chapter and try the award-winning The Order of the Oven Mitt to get a (literal) taste of what’s in store.
Each chapter begins with the basic stats for the game: preparation time, baking difficulty, number of players, age range, game duration and whether or not the host/baker can play without spoilers. The rest of each chapter is divided into two sections: how to prepare the game and how to play the game.
Don’t like baking? Don’t have a kitchen? Don’t have the time to make everything from scratch? The Edible Games Cookbook has you covered! Every recipe offers store-bought options and other ways to play that require less prep time. You choose how much or little time to spend creating each game.

$80,000 may seem like a lot of money, but it's a necessary amount in order to provide a book of quality and high value to players. Unlike other campaigns, this Kickstarter doesn't just cover the printing costs of a finished product. Risks and challenges
Although this will be the first Kickstarter I've created on my own, I helped code, write and design Thimbleweed Park — a critically acclaimed point-and-click adventure game that raised over $600,000 dollars on Kickstarter. I managed almost all of the backer support after the campaign finished, working with our partners to deliver rewards to over 17,000 Kickstarter and post-campaign backers. This included posters, T-shirts, handwritten postcards, big boxes full of goodies, and of course digital copies of the game. So I know what fulfilling a popular Kickstarter campaign entails.
I’ve done a lot of groundwork for this cookbook over the past two years. All twelve games have been designed and playtested, and three full chapters are already written and laid out. I’ve calculated my schedule and budget based on my experience creating those three diverse chapters. I also printed a sample 1-chapter book to see how the dimensions feel physically and what works and doesn’t with the layout. I believe I’ve accurately worked out the budget. The amount I’m asking for is how much it costs to create and ship a professional, high-quality, 300 page, hardcover book for you.
Life is risky, and I’m not perfect. Delays may happen, but I’ve done a lot of planning (I’m obsessed with spreadsheets) and I’m confident my awesome team and I can deliver on this high-quality cookbook within the budget and timeline I’ve described.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
