About this project
As the tiniest Hapenny, a race of little people, Maewyn Bridgepost spends her days from breakfast to midnight nibble scrubbing the hearth, slopping the pigs, and cooking for her guardian, Gelbane, who never spares a kind word. As if life as a servant isn’t bad enough, Mae learns that Gelbane is a troll—and Hapennies are a troll delicacy.
Years ago, a spell trapped Gelbane in Mae’s village. Ever since, Gelbane has been chiseling away the magic spells that guard the village and now Mae’s community is destined to become a smorgasbord for half-starved trolls.
One night Maewyn follows a talking raven into the forest and discovers the home of Callum and Aletta.
These two wizards have very strange talents. Callum’s powers tend to lean toward domestic magick, while Aletta’s talent is the fact that she can turn into a pig.
These two strange mentors help Mae discover her own magick, and it will take all of Mae’s magick and courage to protect her village from the trolls.
When pitchforks, sewing needles, pots, brooms and a little magick are the only weapons at hand, Mae learns that great victories can be accomplished no matter what size you are, but only if you stick together.
Hapenny Magick is a completed, apprx.130 pg. middle grade fantasy adventure. Hapenny Magick will be highly illustrated by my supremely talented friend and fantasy artist Pat Ann Lewis. You can find more examples of her artwork here:
The finished book of Hapenny Magick will be a 5.5”x8” hard cover with dust jacket or perfect bound soft cover with full color cover and heavy paper for no bleed through on the illustrated pages.
Hapenny Magick is in its final stages of production. A professional editor has already combed through the manuscript. I can’t wait to share this wonderful adventure with your school, family and community.
As with my first book, To Find a Wonder, I will be creating activities for the classroom. You can read an excerpt of Hapenny Magick on my website by following this link:
In the near future I will also be creating The Hapenny Guide. The guide will include Hapenny crafts including: carving a raven from soap, a troll fang necklace and a Hobgoblin pin. It will also include the songs that Hapennies sing (with the music notation), recipes for traditional Hapenny fare, sewing patterns to make your own characters from the book, directions for avoiding trolls and planning a Winter’s Gluttony and more fun activities, like what your name would be if you were born a Giant and suggestions on how to build an army from household objects. There is also a sequel to Hapenny Magick that I am currently writing, titled, Tangled Magick.
I want to thank Kickstarter for starting such a wonderful website and for allowing me the opportunity to share my project with you. I also want to thank Jenna Greene of Greeneladymusic.com for co-writing and performing the beautiful vocals and harp of the Hapenny Lullaby that you hear in the background. Thanks to you also, for your generous support and for helping me spread the word!
