Ducky & Spike, children's book with unique illustrations
Ducky and Spike is a children's book about creative problem solving. This book combines my doll making passion with my love of story.
What's the Story About?
When Ducky’s new ball bounces off the door of an underground home, she suddenly has a new friend to play with. But Spike’s spines pop Ducky’s new ball. The two friends try everything to fix it. Spike uses glue. Ducky tries tying the ball together. Nothing works until Ducky’s creative thinking, and Spike’s “spikes”, save the day.
What Inspired you to create the story?
The story of Ducky and Spike grew out of my love for story and a passion for making stuff. I've been a sewing pattern designer for over ten years and a craft enthusiast all my life. Some of my earliest memories are of cutting out construction paper worlds for the characters in my head to live in. I used to make up stories about them but I was never brave enough to share my stories until I had my own children.
Have you ever done this before? What makes you qualified to write a children's book?
I have four kids myself, am a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators (SCBWI), and I hold a Bachelors of Fine Art in creative writing. My first stories, To Find A Wonder, Hapenny Magick and Tangled Magick, were novel length and published traditionally. But I've always wanted to illustrate my own stories and I finally have gotten to the point where I could make nice dolls the right size to create scenery for without having a airplane sized-warehouse.
All the scenery and nearly every prop for Ducky's New Ball was made by hand. The photographs were taken by a professional photographer after I spent months working out the best poses to tell the story I wanted to tell.
For your pledge you can receive amazing items including: hand written thank you notes, pins, stickers, a dedication to you or a loved one in the book, a Skype visit to your home to meet and read the book with your children or grandchildren, limited edition prints and winter-themed cards, original art, and of course, the book! You can even choose to donate a book to a child or library of your choice or for an extra special donation I've teamed up with a family friend to provide books to children in the Kurn Hattin Home in Vermont.
How Will I allocate the pledge money?
Most of the pledge money will go to pay for the printing of the book. I have a quote from the printer of just over $3300.00, which includes the shipping. The remainder of the funds will help me pay for the rewards and shipping the rewards. 10% of the Pledge money will be spent in fees for the Kickstarter platform.
Risks and challenges
The professional photographs for the book have already been completed. However, I am at the mercy of the printer's timeline. I have already laid the book out and the file is ready to go to the printer. I believe I have given enough time for the printing to be done and the books to be shipped in order for me to meet my February deadline to have the books to you. This timeline is the only thing that may shift. All other rewards will be designed and ready to order as soon as the campaign is fully funded.
If you make a pledge that includes a handmade Ducky or Spike doll the doll will not look EXACTLY like the characters. Each doll is made one at a time and will have it's own uniqueness. This makes each doll even more special! No two Duckies will be wearing the same dress.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
