Hi, I'm Jenn, the artist behind Carland Cartography. My artistic vision is to interpret our physical world- by abstracting maps to show the beauty of the world around us, and to help people think about themselves in relation to their surroundings.
Maps represent physical locations. I hope that my artwork will help you remember a place that is important to you.
Location is SO important to us. Think about all of the ways in which we talk about our surroundings:
- past tense ( I grew up in...)
- present tense (I live near the intersection of....) and
- future tense ( I cant wait to visit my friends in.....)
Location is the thing that binds our experiences together- our own experiences from one place to the next, and our combined experiences, sharing space and time with each other.
As a supporter, you can have your own piece of artwork- an abstract print of a map, showing one of the locations included in the project.
More About This Project
This project is inspired by the life of my brother, Justin, and I would like to tell his story by making abstract maps of all the places where he spent his time.
Justin passed away unexpectedly in April 2012 and this is my way of celebrating his life and connecting his story to yours.
This project has the ability to unite people in an uncommon way- it essentially creates a community of people who are all connected, in one way or another, to my brother's journey.
For example, maybe you were born in Pittsburgh, or went to college in Chicago, or landed your first job in San Fran, or got married in Washington DC. Either way, your story is linked to a location that is part of my brother's story, which illustrates how location connects people and connects stories.
Each one of the locations included in this project was carefully selected, chosen as a way to visually show how one person impacted so many places, and left so many connections.
Each of these places hold stories and memories for thousands of people. They are places where people grew up, went to school, fell in love, had children, went on vacation. They are places where our sisters, brothers, parents, friends and relatives live. Each one of their stories overlapping with each other.
Here is the complete list of the locations included in the project-

What You Get In Exchange For Your Support
I have the initial sketches of the locations completed, I just don't have the resources available to complete this project- that's why I need your help.
The money raised from this Kickstarter campaign will give me enough to make a finished series of abstracted maps of all the locations listed, plus create and distribute all of the prints to send out to people who back the project.
As a supporter, you can have a unique piece of artwork showing one (or several) of the places listed above.
Remember, this could be a great present for someone who lives in one of these locations!
About the Artwork
Each piece of artwork starts with a real map of a location. I draw the outline of the map using pencil and paper.
Then, the image is subjected to various sessions of alteration- printed, altered with colored pencil, watercolor, and various mixed media, re-printed, re-colored, scanned, edited with graphic design software, printed, re-colored, scanned, printed, etc. until it reaches the final version.
Remember- these are ABSTRACTED maps, they are artistic interpretations of a place.
The finished artwork for this project will look similar to my previous work- with strong dark lines and bold bright colors. Once I start working, the map has "a mind of its own" and the colors and textures emerge. There is no way to predict what each city will look like ahead of time.
Please note that unlike some of my other artwork (primarily of the Boston area) the work made for this project will be special and distinct because it is inspired by someone's life story. The meaning behind each of these locations is what is driving me to do this.
How Kickstarter Works
In order to contribute, click on the "Back This Project" button on this page. You will be re-directed to a form where you can choose how much you want to contribute. The amount will be debited from your bank ONLY if I reach my goal of $1,500 and will be charged at the end of the project.
The project is posted on this site live for a limited time. If the project is funded during that time period, I will be able to complete this project.
If funded, I will work through the list of locations alphabetically by state (so those of you who choose San Jose will get your print before those of you who choose Atlanta) and create the work one by one. Once a city is completed, I will distribute all the prints associated with that city.
Tell your friends, your family, your co-workers. Send an email to one of the people in your life who lives in one of these places. Anything that you can do to help raise awareness of my idea is much appreciated.
Gone, But Not Forgotten
Shortly after Justin passed away, One of his best friends told me "we have to keep his memories alive".
I hope that this project lets me do that, by letting his story be told through making this work, and by sharing it with people who are all connected to his story by a common bond: the places where we all spend our time.
Included with each print will be a short written description on why this location was chosen and a brief anecdote about Justin, so you can get a sense for what he was like, even if you didn't have the opportunity to know him.
Q: What happens if the Kickstarter funding goal is not met?
A: The project will not happen and nobody's credit card will be charged.
Q: Can I contribute by using a check or money order?
A: No, I need to reach my goal of $1500 through Kickstarter. All pledges must be made through this site. You will need a credit card to pledge. Kickstarter is linked to Amazon.com, so if you have an active Amazon account, your credit card information may already be on file.
Q: How are the prints made?
A: They are digital prints, made with high-quality ink on 100lb paper. The framed version are in a simple black frame with plexiglass.
Q:When will I get my print?
A: If funded, I will start working on each location (in alpha order) in June, 2013. I'm giving myself an absolute deadline of April 2015 to get everything done, but most of the work will be completed way before then.
Q:How do I choose which locations I want?
A: If the project is funded, I will create a survey and send it out to each of the backers. This survey will allow you to choose which place(s) you want.
Q:What happens if I want prints of several different cities?
A: If the project is funded, I will create a survey and send it out to each of the backers. This survey will ask you if you want your items sent in one shipment (once they are all done) or sent individually.
Q: How are the digital files (PDFs) delivered?
A: If you choose a digital file option, you WILL NOT get a print in the mail. Instead, you will get a high-resolution PDF file in your inbox. It will be up to you to print it and frame it.
Q: How are the prints delivered?
A: Each print (whether framed or not) will be sent with a tracking number and insurance via the US Post Office. I will send status updates to the supporters of the project, letting people know when the next batch of prints will be shipped out.
Q: Are shipping costs included?
A: If you are shipping inside the USA, all shipping costs are included. If you are shipping outside the US, additional fees apply.
Q: Can I choose what color I want for my print?
A: No. I will only make one version of each of the places listed, and all of the prints will all be identical for each location. There's no way to determine what they will look like ahead of time. The coloration process is part of the "artistic magic". I can tell you they will be all be brightly colored (see images of previous work).
Q: Are these prints going to be for sale after the Kickstarter is over?
A1: If the project isn't funded, none of the prints will be made, so they wont be available to sell anywhere.
A2:If the project is funded, you will have the option to buy additional prints on my Etsy site, but they will be more expensive and you will have to pay for shipping and any applicable taxes. The most affordable (and guaranteed) way top get one of these prints is to participate in this Kickstarter project.

Risks and challenges
I think the biggest challenge will be keeping on schedule. Because I am aware of this, I will plan out as much as I can at the beginning of the project so that I have enough time to work out any problems as they come up. I think with a challenge like this, the key is setting up a timeline and preparing as much as you can in advance.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
