About this project
Thanks to everyone who helped us meet our original funding goal! We will use any dollars contributed above our original amount to create and send out even MORE found poetry kits.
Over at the Found Poetry Review, we champion the poetry of the existing and the everyday. We aim to free poetry from the confines of dusty libraries and college creative writing classes, and teach people to see the poetry embedded in the written materials they come into contact with every day.
WHAT IS FOUND POETRY?
In short, found poetry is the art of excerpting words and phrases from any written source and combining them in new ways to form a poem. In our journal's one-year history, we've seen poems created from Wikipedia, Charles Manson's court testimony, lecture notes, AOL search histories, titles of paintings, guestbooks and comic strip dialogues -- just to name a few.
WHAT IS THE FOUND POETRY PROJECT?
With your support, the Found Poetry Project will create 250 found poetry kits to be distributed in communities across the United States during National Poetry Month in April. Each kit, packaged in a Ziploc bag with identifying external sticker, contains:
- A postcard explaining what the project is and how to write a found poem
- A source text from which to create a found poem (e.g. magazine and newspaper articles, pages from books, text of famous speeches, Wikipedia articles and more)
- A pen to mark up the text and with which to write
- A small note pad on which to draft the poem
- Instructions on where to upload their poems on the web
We will enlist volunteers from different corners of the country to distribute these kits during the month of April in their communities, leaving them in public places like coffee shops, libraries, public transportation, movie theaters, college campuses, bathrooms and more.
We are currently creating a website, http://www.foundpoetryproject.com where people can go to learn more about the project, sign up to receive kits to distribute, and get instructions on how to extend the project by making and distributing their own kits. Beginning April 1, people who find the kits will be able to submit their found poem through the website to be posted for others to read.
Following National Poetry Month, a limited number of printed and bound copies of all of the poems submitted as part of the Found Poetry Project will be produced.
HOW WILL MY CONTRIBUTIONS BE USED?
The majority of your support will go to buying the materials for the kits and mailing them out around the country, with the remaining sliver going to support the design and development of the project website. Should we exceed our initial funding goal, we will use the funds to produce and distribute more found poetry kits.
HOW ELSE CAN I GET INVOLVED?
We appreciate your interest and your support! If you can't afford to back us financially, but like what we're doing, we'd love to have you tell your friends about the project through your website, blog or social media networks. Additionally, we'll post an update once our website is live -- we'd be thrilled to have you sign up to distribute poems or to create found poetry kits of your own.
Finally, feel free to ask us any questions you have about the project or about found poetry. We'd love the chance to have a conversation with you!
