About this project
**Dec 2 Update: Great news! The overwhelming success of our Kickstarter has enabled our factory to speed up production, so now we plan to ship out the first 1,100 non-early bird $250 tanks in late February 2016 instead of April. Nice work Kickstarters, here's to the power of crowdfunding!
Only 200 tanks remain for late February shipping. Once the Kickstarter is over, all tanks will be full price and not available for purchase until late April.
Everyone can benefit from a moment of peace. Uncover your moment with a Jellyfish Cylinder Nano aquarium, the easiest and most affordable aquarium that makes keeping jellyfish simple for anyone.
- Live jellyfish shipped year-round from our certified breeding facility right to your doorstep
- Special laminar water flow pattern not possible in regular fish tanks mimics the natural open water habitat of jellyfish
- Integrated mechanical, chemical and biological filtration in an accessible, hidden compartment makes it simple to operate and keep clean
- Driven by a whisper quiet air pump that oxygenates the water and introduces no heat, keeping the jellyfish comfortable at room temperature
- LED changes the colors of the jellyfish with the click of a remote control button
- Made from durable, crystal clear acrylic hand-molded by the same factory we've been working with for five years
- Comes with all the accessories you need so you just add water: LED, remote control, sponge filter, salt, air pump, pipette, activated charcoal, nitrifying bacteria starter, and hydrometer
Thanks to the early success of our Kickstarter project, we are now shipping non-early bird tanks in late February instead of April! (Kickstarter doesn't allow us to change the text on the rewards, so they still say April delivery.)
Spread the word and reap the rewards! If you refer friends to buy a tank, you both get one jellyfish upgraded from small to medium size (a $17 value for each of you)! To receive your upgrade after you buy your tank, forward your pledge confirmation email from Kickstarter to firstname.lastname@example.org with the message "I got a bigger jellyfish for [your friend's first and last names]!" Then tell your friend to forward their confirmation email from Kickstarter to email@example.com with the message "[your first and last names] got me a bigger jellyfish!" We'll message you back when we've received both emails to confirm you'll both get one jellyfish size upgrade. You can get up to three size upgrades (because the tank comes with three jellies), but feel free to tell all your friends!
Strettttttch Goal -- If we sell 5,000 tanks during this campaign, we'll automatically add a free small jellyfish to every one of our Kickstarter $250 reward packages (a $22 value)! That's not just three jellyfish, but four in total. Start the countdown!
One of the biggest improvements we have made to our company since our 2011 Kickstarter campaign is drastically improving our customer support system. We have attacked that from every angle by designing our product (and re-designing our existing products) to make jellyfish lifespan the top priority.
- Tutorials at JellyfishArt.com/kb/start guide you through every step from setup to maintenance with instructional diagrams, videos and articles (see the Setup and Acclimation videos below)
- All our jellyfish come with a 30-Day Guarantee, so we replace them for free if needed. In reality, the jellyfish live a lot longer than that in this tank. We actually don't know how long yet because the jellies in our first running prototypes from seven months ago are still kicking!
- We give live, personalized, one-on-one support via phone at (844) 535-5900, email at firstname.lastname@example.org and live chat at JellyfishArt.com
Your tank arrives in the first shipment and is easy to set up in ten minutes:
Then whenever you're ready for your non-stinging jellyfish, schedule your second shipment at JellyfishArt.com to be delivered to your doorstep. The $250 rewards include jellyfish, food and express shipping to anywhere in the continental U.S.. With the $150 reward, you can purchase jellyfish from us separately. Customers outside the U.S. can get the tank from us and get jellies from partner suppliers.
We gave a few early prototype tanks out to some experts in the marine biology and aquarium fields (and one to Vanilla Ice too). Brandon Rutherford (Illinois Science Teacher of the Year 2013), Matt Pedersen (Aquarist of the Year 2009 at the Marine Aquarium Society of North America), Mike Senske (co-founder of Aquarium Design Group) and Ron Shimek (prolific aquarium writer and PhD in zoology) give their expert feedback on our tank in this video:

Jellyfish Art has built a 100% sustainable breeding facility in our Florida warehouse to supply our customers with healthy jellyfish year-round. It is staffed with marine biologists and has earned the highest inspection rating of the Florida Fish and Wildlife Division of Aquaculture. Once your tank is set up, you can schedule delivery of your jellyfish from our facility at our website JellyfishArt.com.
In 2011, Alex Andon crowdfunded the Desktop Jellyfish Tank in one of the first successful Kickstarter product launches, transforming his hobby into a real business, Jellyfish Art. In 2013 Alex teamed up with us, Reef Aquaria Design. We are one of the nation’s premier custom aquarium design companies, a family-run business with three generations of experience. By combining Reef Aquaria Design’s expertise with Alex’s original vision, we were able to make the original Desktop Jellyfish Tank much easier for customers to operate and maintain. Over the past several years, Jellyfish Art has made significant upgrades to its jellyfish aquaculture operation to improve the quality and consistency of our moon jellyfish and significantly increase their lifespan.
Our story began in 1954 when Joseph Turner started building some of the first custom reef aquariums as a founding member of the Florida Marine Aquarium Society. He quickly became known as an expert in his field. His son, Jeff Turner, carried on the business and, with his wife Joleen, founded Reef Aquaria Design. Now their son Joe runs Jellyfish Art.
We've created award-winning custom reef and jellyfish aquariums, including a 2,000-gallon coral reef exhibit at the Smithsonian's National Museum of Natural History and the world's largest privately-owned jellyfish aquarium at the Coba Cocina restaurant in Kentucky. We even built a jellyfish tank with Vanilla Ice for his TV show on The DIY Network, The Vanilla Ice Project!
Jellyfish Art is committed to sustainability. Every year we help the conservation non-profit Coral Restoration Foundation transplant hundreds of threatened staghorn corals to the reefs surrounding the Florida Keys.
In March, we created the Jellyfish Art Education Initiative to inspire the next generation of ocean stewards. We supply educators with jellyfish aquariums, give classroom presentations and lead marine biology field trips to teach kids about marine conservation. Please feel free to use our extensive Educator Resource Guide to turn your jellyfish aquarium into an immersive learning experience!
Education Through Jellyfish -- For every 100 tanks we sell on Kickstarter we'll donate a tank to a school. We invite all our Kickstarter backers to submit candidate schools and vote on them!
Jellyfish Art wouldn’t be here without you Kickstarters, and we can’t wait to launch this tank to you first!
This campaign has been a tremendous effort from too many people to name, but we want to give a special thanks to Anthony Rowe Films for making our video, madeinhollywoodusa for providing more jellyfish imagery, and Vanilla Ice for always telling us to smile, enjoy life, and dream BIG!
Risks and challenges
Unparalleled Customer Support:
We've made huge strides in customer support since the company was born out of Kickstarter in 2011. We have have built an entire support system to make jellyfish lifespan our top priority. We also created a complete knowledge base section with instructional diagrams, videos, and articles, and make ourselves available to answer any questions by phone at (844) 535-5900, email at email@example.com and live chat at JellyfishArt.com. We will keep our Kickstarter page fresh with updates both during and after the campaign.
This is Jellyfish Art's second Kickstarter project. First hand experience from our initial crowdfunding campaign and running the business since then has helped us learn about what challenges we may confront and how to plan for them. We are ready to do whatever it takes to ensure that every customer is happy with their purchase and proud to be a part of the Jellyfish Art experience.
We have been preparing for this product launch for two years. We've worked very closely with our reliable factory for five years and our manufacturing line is already completely set up. The early bird tanks started shipping to our warehouse before this Kickstarter campaign began and the remaining tanks are already being built as you read this.
Pre-Christmas Tank Delivery:
This is a bold move since our campaign ends so close to Christmas, but we know what a cool gift this would be, so we're making it happen. The first batch of early bird tanks are currently in transit to our warehouse and we have a carefully organized system in place to collect addresses, work out all the shipping logistics, and get these tanks delivered to the lucky early bird backers on time. We have done a few of these bulk flash deliveries before and we know how to stay ahead of all the inevitable hiccups to get those tanks out the door.
Years of experience designing and constructing large scale custom reef and jellyfish tanks have prepared us for the challenges of designing a home jellyfish tank that is easy for anyone to use. We know happy customers and a successful business depend on a quality product people trust, so ensuring the health of the jellyfish drove every design choice on this tank.
30-Day Jellyfish Guarantee:
Talk is cheap, so we give a 30-day guarantee on all our jellyfish. If your jellies do not survive that time for some reason, we replace them for free (excluding shipping cost). However, we've worked extraordinarily hard to optimize our tank design, shipping methods and food blend to make sure they live a lot longer than that. We work with every single customer to make sure they're happy and their jellyfish are healthy!
