We'll leave this right here...
Opening a brewery ain’t easy. Oh, sure we’ve talked about it for years, but finally our Head Brewer’s wife basically told him to roll the dice or leave the table. So, here we are. We’re betting on an open brewery concept in a beer-barren slice of Oakland County, Michigan. The ingredients are all here, but we need your support to raise over $15,000 in 45 days. So, let us tell you why this is a good idea.
The investors' wager...
Our Head Brewer, Jef, likes to talk – and for once it may have been a good thing. He's spoken to so many people about the concept and the brewery, that a good few have become very interested. They’re challenging him to raise capital. Scraping together money for a brewery while being a family man (father of three) is not the easiest thing to do. He's collected bottles. He's saved change. He’s even taken some of it to the casino to increase funds (hey, this is Loaded Dice Brewery after all). As we mentioned, his group of interested investors challenged him to raise another $15,000 in sixty days, and they'll match it. He got a handshake and everything!
There's a void to fill...
Surprise! They’re actually aren’t that many great breweries once you get outside a certain radius of Detroit. The good people of Oakland County, north of Troy, along the I-75 corridor (to be very specific) deserve fresh beer and a fun atmosphere. We’ve already begun scouting and researching different locations in this area. So not only is this good business, it’s being good Samaritans. Samaritans who make really good beer.
Nothing to hide…
Loaded Dice will be an "open brewery." Think open kitchen at a restaurant. We want to create and encourage conversation about the beers we brew. Want to know our recipes? Our cards are on the table. Malt. Water. Hops. Yeast. We want you to know what we know, and what you know, ya know? We even have a super-secret mobile app in the works to help with this. (Hey, that's another revenue stream!)
But a conversation goes both ways. It can’t be all about our ideas. We’ll regularly tap (another pun) our customers for their great ideas and, heck, we might even make those ideas into beers. We’re going to set the standard for what an “open brewery” should be.
Open Source Beer
We believe in sharing information. This is why we have decided to borrow themes from the open source community and reveal the “source code” of our brewery. Not only will we openly share all our beer recipes but also the processes we’ve been through to open and run the brewery. Expect to see mash schedules, fermentation profiles, brew house and bar schematics and many other things related to Loaded Dice Brewery. We feel sharing of this information is a great way to give back to the brewing community and help educate others looking to open a brewery.
Let’s get technical for a minute. You know you want to. Loaded Dice will use a Brewha BIAC Brewing System to allow us to brew quicker – we have to stay nimble if we’re going to react to customer demands. Also, this system has a small footprint even though it can do a ton of heavy-lifting: Mash? Check. Lautering? You bet. (Pun!) Fermenting? Yes, indeedie. This means we take up less space and expand with ease!
What about the beer, Ace?
Loaded Dice Brewery will produce several styles of high quality ales and lagers ranging from light ales, designed to be an introduction to microbrews, to the rich exciting and diverse assortment of experimental and extreme styles of eccentric ales that Michigan is known for. Specialty beers, seasonal beers, wild ales, and even fruit beers will also be produced. However, Loaded Dice also plans to have a core group of mainstays which customers can expect to always be on tap. What follows is a compilation of possible house mainstays, open to revision and expansion, with at least four beers available at any given time.
- Pass Line Porter (9.1% ABV, 29 IBU)
- Parlay Pale Ale (6.7% ABV, 67 IBU)
- Field Bet Wheat (5.2% ABV, 18 IBU)
- Hop Bet Hazy IPA (7.1% ABV, 72 IBU)
- Check-Raise Chocolate Milk Shake Stout (5.4% ABV, 27 IBU)
- Crew Money Saison (6.4% ABV, 28 IBU)
- Last Bet Lager (4.1@ ABV, 18 IBU)
- Hard-ways Series (Chili-Stout, Extra Hopped IPA, Fruit Wheat Beer, and a Rye Lager)
- Aces & 8’s Series (Twice a year series “splitting” recipes for a unique blend of brew)
- Hi/Lo Series (Barrel-aged stouts, Dark IPAs, Session Ale)
Our unique configuration allows for our customers and other local breweries to collaborate with our head brewer to come up with new, and interesting brews. We want there to always be a beer inspired by one of our customers and others on tap. This can also give the brewpub a great sales boost as there is no better way to market something than by word of mouth. The beer creators will be able to tell their friends and family when their beer is on tap at the pub and to come enjoy a pint or two with the person who brewed it. Also, this will be a "Happy Tap" where $1/pint of the proceeds from this brew will go to a local charity.

Risks and challenges
This brewery is several months away from being open. We are still in the “raising capital” phase, but we have a committed team that wants to get this done. A team of seasoned investors, real estate experts, marketing geniuses, and brewing nuts all agile, friends, and long-time associates. We’ve been talking about this long enough to be experts. If we’re willing to take the risk, it means we’ve talked ourselves out of most hypothetical problems. We’re ready to do this. Are you in?Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
