Frequently Asked Questions
We crunched the numbers to see how we could improve the shipping expense for groups who want to back together in order to economize in this way.
There is a particularly unpleasant international shipping cost breakpoint at four pounds, and The White Box is currently clocking in at just over two pounds. As a result, our shipping price more or less doubles for the second copy of The White Box (so no help there), but then falls dramatically away after that.
So, what we're able to offer is this: For international (including Canada) shipments, after two copies at the regular shipping expense, the cost of shipping drops to $5 per additional copy of The White Box. For example, four copies shipped to Europe would cost $30 x 4 = $120 (for the basic White Box cost) plus $25 + $25 + $5 + $5 = $60 (for shipping of those four). Perhaps obviously, all copies must go to the same address.
We're not creating a new tier for this, and you don't need to increase you pledge now to take advantage of it. We'll make it available in our pledge manager once the campaign has ended, and collect additional funds then.
Crunching these numbers suggested that the same kind of bulk deal is possible in the U.S. Along the same lines, for U.S. backers ordering multiple White Boxes, the third and subsequent copies will have shipping charges reduced to $3 each. Again, this will be handled post-campaign, in our pledge manager.
We realize this is not as inexpensive as you'd like. It's not as inexpensive as we'd like, either, but we appreciate you considering it.Last updated:
Can I buy several copies of The White Box for my school, library, or other non-profit at a reduced rate, for our game design or other creative curriculum?
We're extremely excited to offer The White Box to schools, libraries, and other non-profits that teach game design. The ways we considered structuring such an offer through this Kickstarter were all pointlessly complicated for everyone involved. So, instead, for The White Box, Atlas Games will simply offer its standard retail discount terms to non-profit organizations that provide evidence of non-profit status, such as an IRS determination letter granted to a 501(c)(3) organization. These orders will begin shipping in November, in the regular channel distribution window for The White Box.
Atlas's retail discount policy can be found here (scroll down to "Retail Discount Policy"): <http://www.atlas-games.com/retailer.php>. To order, email sales at atlas dash games dot com.Last updated:
Our early component rosters had blank cards in them, but we removed them so we could offer a better value to backers and buyers.
They key reason that cards were cut from the list, as opposed to some other component, is that it's our experience as game designers that the best way to make prototypes of cards is to print them on standard office paper (nine to a sheet, usually), cut them apart, and then sleeve them (often with a backer card for stiffness, scavenged from among otherwise-useless CCG commons). This results in cards that are as (or more) sturdy than hand-made cards on blank playing card stock. They're also much easier to update as you revise your prototype than handwritten cards are.
James Ernest made a great video about making your own prototype cards this way (and in two other ways): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l0t6PBypahILast updated:
Is is possible to buy a physical version of The White Box Essays without the other components of The White Box?
We've decided not to make The White Box Essays available that way for the foreseeable future. We think the digital edition is a good offering for those whose key interest is the information, and we've worked very hard to keep the price of the box down for those who prefer to have a physical object. We're also very keen to keep the fulfillment process simple in order to meet our obligations on time.Last updated:
Do the ebook versions of Things We Think About Games and The Bones: Us and Our Dice come with the $30 Box, Bits, and Book tier? If not, can I get them as add-ons?
We're glad so many folks are interested in those two books! We loved making them.
Those ebooks aren't part of the $30 tier. You will be able to get them as add-ons in our post-campaign pledge manager, but there's no need to wait — both are available now from other Gameplaywright electronic distributors (e.g. Amazon, Nook, DriveThruRPG).
Our pledge manager prices won't be discounted from the regular price due to Amazon's terms of sale, so if you're interested in them, there's really no reason not to pick them up now.
