Light vs dark. Science vs the occult. Electricity vs magic. Good vs evil. Reason vs superstition. The modern world vs the ancient. Earth vs the alien stars. Tesla vs Cthulhu.
Nikola Tesla is indescribably awesome. He invented alternating current, the A/C motor, the remote control, neon and fluorescent lighting, robotics, and radio (yes, it was Tesla and not Marconi). He held over 300 patents and, in 1901, he predicted a device we'd hold in our hand to speak to each other, dictate to text, transmit pictures, and listen to music, across the globe and all without wires. More than a century later, we have that device and we call it a smartphone. Tesla was, by any standards, a genius and has been called "The Inventor of the 20th Century". Who ELSE would you want defending the Earth?
H.P. Lovecraft created one of the most terrifying visions of the supernatural the world has ever seen. His vision of a universe filled with beings who either sought our destruction or simply were utterly indifferent to our suffering or our very existence has inspired artists as diverse as Neil Gaiman, August Derleth, Clive Barker, Guillermo Del Toro, Stephen King, Alan Moore, H.R. Giger, Robert Bloch, Mike Mignola, Roger Corman, Sam Raimi, John Carpenter...
So, the Inventor of the 20th Century. The most influential horror writer of all time.
How can these two worlds not meet?
What happens if we exceed our goal? More stories! We've already unlocked the e-Book and we're headed for the graphic novel! Here's the overview; please see Update #19 for details.
NOTE: The e-Book is a perk for ALL backers! Even a $1 pledge gets you the e-Book!
Our goal is to create an entire story world where the greatest inventor of the modern age battles the most terrifying creatures imaginable. We want to explore many ways of telling our stories, from short and feature films to graphic novels, fiction, gaming, and radio plays (or, if you want to be modern, podcasts!) We're dreaming big and starting small, with your help.
Our short film, The Nightmare of Desolation Sound, will tell the story of a Miskatonic University expedition to Desolation Sound in the wilderness of British Columbia in 1926; the sole survivor is graduate student Elaine West. What happened? How is Tesla involved? And what awaits her on her return to Miskatonic University?
Each stage of the project will tell a different facet of the doomed expedition, and, while each will stand on its own, together they'll give fascinating information about what happened there, what has awoken, and what it means for the future of humanity... or perhaps, the lack of a future.
We want to create an original indie adventure franchise, and we can do it with your help. We hope you'll join us as we do some good old fashioned storytelling, and we will in turn provide you with harrowing tales of adventure and terror!
Of course, there is the film itself! And it is our plan to send this film to festivals rather than posting it online, so your downloaded copy may be the only way to see the film outside of festivals anytime soon... and possibly EVER! And you can get behind-the-scenes photos, the soundtrack, and more.
We've also got some wonderful rewards based on Stephanie Malone's fantastic designs, including t-shirts, diplomas, expedition patches...
Plus, there are our stretch goals! Our first stretch goal will be a digital graphic novel, written by Jeff Richards and illustrated by renowned Lovecraftian artist Michael Zigerlig, and from there we will continue on to fiction, radio plays, and extending the graphic novel, including possibly printing it. The more we raise, the more Tesla vs Cthulhu we can bring to you!
For me, some of the best aspects of stories is where they cross over into our world. My office is filled with various prop items from films and TV, both my own and others' projects. We want to give you that same, "you are part of it" feeling with Tesla vs Cthulhu. At various levels, you receive the patch for Miskatonic's Desolation Sound expedition, copies of Elaine West's report, and even be part of H.P. Lovecraft's fabled Miskatonic University.
Once the film is completed, we'll be building a website at Miskatonic-University.com to help promote the project. You can be listed there, as a student, as a professor, even as a Dean of the school. Plus, you can get your own diploma for Miskatonic, ranging from Bachelor's degrees up to PhDs. (Just please don't add them to your resume!)
Risks and challenges
Tesla vs Cthulhu: The Nightmare of Desolation Sound is a period piece, which presents certain challenges in terms of prop and wardrobe acquisition. There are also a small number of visual effects shots. Additionally, we'll face all the challenges that any film faces, such as the availability of cast, crew, and gear, as well as weather issues. However we believe, based on over a decade's experience, that we've budgeted sufficiently to cover all expenses; the film itself only requires three days total of shooting with most of that indoors at a single location. Plus, we can call upon our extensive network of contacts in the Vancouver film community to assist us. We are committed to seeing this film completed, and will bend all of our resources and creativity to making The Nightmare of Desolation Sound a great film!Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
