HOW WILL YOU USE THE KICKSTARTER FUNDS?

We're raising funds to get the Virtero fitness training platform into the hands of beta users in late Summer 2014.  Virtero's automated fitness training means that each athlete gets a customized training plan to help new and seasoned triathletes reach their fitness goals with a solution that is affordable, flexible and tailored for optimal training results.

Our proprietary software technology automatically generates and adapts fitness training plans based on an athlete's unique combination of goal(s), athletic profile, current fitness level, benchmark results, and personal schedule.

WHO ARE YOUR TRIATHLON TRAINING EXPERTS?

Virtero embodies the training expertise and performance physiology science of the world's best triathlon guru - Marc Evans, sports medicine physician, Dr. Naomi Albertson, and professional triathlete, Chris Lieto

Marc Evans

Marc has been inspiring excellence in endurance athletes and coaches since debuting as triathlon’s first professional coach in 1981. He is a respected resource for triathlon federations and coaches, and conducts movement assessment workshops and masters-level education clinics world-wide. A two-time head coach for USA Triathlon, he led the elite 12-member team at the first World Championships in 1989. Marc was the head coach for USA Triathlon performance testing at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs and a founding member of the USA Triathlon coaching commission. Marc resides outside Boulder, Colorado.

Dr. Naomi Albertson

Dr. Albertson has been assisting world-class and amateur athletes prevent, diagnose and recover from sports injuries for more than 25 years. She received her medical degree from Tufts University, and her sports medicine training from Stanford University.  She founded and runs the Reno Orthopedic and Sports Performance Center. Dr. Albertson resides in Reno, Nevada.

Chris Lieto

Chris is a three-time Ironman Champion and former U.S. National Ironman Champion. Recently retired from racing, Chris stays actively involved in the triathlon community through a number of related consulting opportunities, including Virtero - as product consultant and ambassador. He is also the founder of More than Sport, a non-profit dedicated to changing the world through the power of sport. Chris resides on the Big Island of Hawaii.

THE VIRTERO TEAM

Risks and challenges

There are three things that pose the greatest risk to our project:

1. Domain Complexity: The inherent complexity of automating the complex fitness training domain of expertise.

2. Product Definition: Right-sizing the product to achieve the balance between innovative, compelling product and realistic development budget.

3. Software Development: Effectively managing the software product development to ensure quality AND rapid time-to-market.

Automated fitness training is a completely new field which has the goal of understanding and codifying the complex rules, expertise and experience of a world-class coach, and constructing a software algorithm that robustly replicates that complex reasoning process.

Automating triathlon fitness training is further complicated by the fact that it incorporates three sports- swim, bike and run, and the added layer of balancing training across the three disciplines.

At Virtero, we did several things to address all of these issues:

1. World Class Team: First, everyone on our team is an athlete so we live this stuff everyday with our own workouts and training plans. Second, we recruited world-class experts to ensure we were basing the product on sound science and best practices. Third, we deconstructed the fitness plan development process into its essential elements, and then reconstructed it within our software. Along the way we innovated - a lot - to render every aspect into a heuristics and data-driven algorithm that is going to fundamentally change the landscape of the fitness training economy and ecosystem.

2. Minimally Viable Product: As we concepted and developed the product, every day we asked ourselves one simple question - do we need this next feature to be successful in the BETA release? Answering that question helped us to carefully extract and triage the near-term features from the long-term strategic vision.

We believe that we are in the process of creating an entirely new product category that will dramatically reduce the cost while ensuring consistent delivery of high quality goal-driven fitness training plans.
