JULY 9TH - LAST DAY! One final stretch goal before we end today at 5 p.m. New songs & fantastic costumes!
"What Sharp Teeth" tells the Little Red Riding hood story through the three main characters: Little Red, The Narrator, and The Crocodile (there was a wolf on the path, but Wolf met Crocodile and...no more wolf.) The fairy tale unravels into a darkly humorous rock opera which both appreciates and sunders the magic of fairytales; it also has elements of Steampunk, Geek culture, and a pinch of Gothic darkness. It has some of all the unusual worlds we love at Jeff Mach Events.
You can see our last rock opera through this (protected) Vimeo link. Note that you'll need the "!" in the password.):
This is a prequel to our seminal and wildly beloved Steampunk rock opera Absinthe Heroes, which was crowdfunded successfully in 2015. It's a different genre and world, but has the same focus on telling a rich and enthralling story and making it just a little odd and just a little dark.
Like "Absinthe Heroes", it's chock full of surprises, plot twists, Easter eggs, and, just as things are starting to get seriously silly, it arcs into exhilarating drama and storytelling.

My name is Jeff Mach. I run the world's largest Steampunk event, The Steampunk World's Fair, which has about 8,000 attendees annually, but the event for which I was most known was something called the Wicked Winter Renaissance Faire, a genre-bending Faire which changed some of how fandom felt about what a festival, or a Renfaire, could do. I wrote "What Sharp Teeth" as a piece of that unbounded, tale-telling, barrier-smashing tradition.
Now The Wicked Faire is replaced by the unconventional Faerie Festival Glimmerdark, and we're using that to bring you this highly unconventional fairy tale: We've got Broadway-quality sound and light, beautiful stage setups, experienced and talented musicians and performers, and everything we need to make a great show! If we have enough funding, we'll also seek to bring it to The Steampunk World's Fair!
Every Mad Scientist Needs A Secret Weapon
Actually, our secret weapon isn't secret at all - I can tell you exactly what it is. It's that thing I mentioned above - namely, we put on large events which are specifically geared up for performance. Because Glimmerdark Faerie Festival isn't just the host of this show - it's a massive advantage for us, and for you!
Here's how it helps: Most theatricals need a ton of budget for theatre space. We don't! We've got a brilliant stage ready and waiting for us! Sound and light are difficult and expensive - especially for musical theatre! But we already have the services of Circuit 6, whose work has graced stages of all sizes throughout the nation. They've designed for tiny theatres and massive venues. Our sonic and illuminatory production values are going to be tremendous - at no cost to us! And not to put too fine a point on it, it's hard for a good show to find a good producer. But being a producer/promoter is my full-time job, and has been for a decade. I don't just have the relevant skills and knowledge - I literally wake up every morning and go to work making things like this happen.
And The Next Part Is Up To You!
Now, like all of our rock operas, "What SHARP Teeth" is not inherently a lavish show. It can be done - and has been done - with production values as simple as just myself and a guitar. But we work with so many talented artisans, creators, and performers, and we'd love to put on the biggest, splashiest show we can!
Some will go towards getting the word out - we'd like to make sure, for example, that the artists and actors and musicians involved get recognized for their work! Some will go to props, some to costuming, some to sets, some will go to musical accompaniment - in general, we're going to take the money we get and use it to maximize your enjoyment of the show! We'll also do a live video shoot - right now, we're budgeted for a simple one-camera show, but if we make our goal, our stretch goal will be a multi-camera, beautifully edited film. That way, you can bring "What Sharp Teeth" right into your own screens!
Risks and challenges
Some of the primary challenges facing most theatrical productions are the cost and setup of a theatre itself. But Glimmerdark, being an international festival, has staging, light, and sound which rival any major theatre in the country.
Also, while we're putting together a great cast, "What SHARP Teeth" was originally designed as a one man show; if all of the members of our cast were kidnapped on the day of performance, I could still put on the show myself. However, I would probably leave the theatre soon after I finished, to track down and exact vengeance from said kidnappers. So I might not be able to stick around for questions if that happens.
I take the risks very, very seriously; as an event promoter, I recognize how critical it is to bring people a show which not only fulfills expectations and hapens at the right place and in the right time, but also one which blows the audience away and makes everyone glad they came. The honest truth is that we already HAVE the majority of the resources we need to do this show. What we seek are the resources to do the show AMAZINGLY WELL, and then share it with you.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
