Artificial Intelligence for Humans
I need your support for my next Artificial Intelligence book. It does not matter if you backed/read the previous books or not. These books are independent-- you can start at any point.
This book covers classic and deep neural networks. From the very beginnings of AI, neural networks have been one of its most important parts. Now, thanks to deep learning, neural networks are back in the spotlight again. This book will include neural network types such as Hopfield, Self Organizing Maps, Feedforward Networks, Convolutional and Deep Belief Neural Networks. You will see how to train these neural networks with Backpropagation, Resilient Propagation, Genetic Algorithms, Levenberg Marquardt and others. Most importantly, you will see how all of these technologies build upon each other.
About Jeff Heaton
This is not my first time producing a book. Let me introduce myself! My name is Jeff Heaton. I am a data scientist, PhD student and indy publisher. I've written books as an indie author, as well as through large publishing houses. I am lead developer on the Encog Machine Learning Framework open source project, and have produced over 100 YouTube videos covering a wide array of AI topics. This will be my third book on Kickstarter, you can see the others here.
About the Book
For this indie project I will create both:
- A physical paperback book
- A DRM-Free PDF, Kindle, ePub and MOBI ebook
The physical paperback will be sold on Amazon and elsewhere.

About the Series
Artificial Intelligence for Humans is a book series meant to teach AI to someone who does not have an extensive mathematical background. I only assume that the reader has a basic "College Algebra" and "Computer Programming" background. If I use an advanced mathematical technique, I will explain it! Every chapter also includes a programming example. Examples are currently provided in Java, C# and Python.
Most AI books assume you just walked off a university campus having aced Calculus and Linear Algebra. These books are full of formulas and very short on programming examples.
The volumes planned in this series are as follows. Only volume 3 is covered by this Kickstarter project.
- Volume 3: Neural Networks
Next book planned:
- Volume 0: Introduction to the Math of AI
Why this Book?
Do you really want a book full of equations like this??? That include no compilable code???
If you do, then you are in luck! There are already quite a few such books. Such a book is not my focus. I want to expand on a successful book I wrote a few years ago. This book taught the mathematics of neural networks assuming that the reader had only basic college algebra knowledge. I covered just enough calculus and linear algebra to understand neural networks.
This book did well. It now holds the #1 spot on Amazon.COM (USA) if you perform a search on "Neural Networks". (see for yourself)
AI is Coming of Age! (seriously)
Why learn AI? AI does have a major "coolness factor". Many people jump into AI for this reason alone. However, in recent years AI is becoming more important.
Why is AI important? Seriously AI is coming of age this time! I know AI has been "coming of age" since the 1950's.
The amount of computer data in the world is increasing at an amazing rate. This is thrusting many AI related concepts into the mainstream. How many of these terms have you seen in the media lately?
Terms such as Business Intelligence, Data Mining, Predictive Modeling, Big Data and Data Science are all, in various degrees, connected to AI. The world has more data that it can wrap its head around!
Cloud computing is also helping to allow Big Data to be analyzed by AI. Amazon EC2 allows you to quickly command a large cluster of computers to process Big Data tasks.
Harvard Business Review even called "Data Scientist" the sexiest job of the 21st century! (link)
There you go! AI can even help your love life!
A Few Examples from the Book
I've done some preliminary work on Chapters 1&2. You can see that here.
I Need your Support
Artificial Intelligence (AI) is a fascinating topic. I truly enjoy programming in this area. I am excited to bring this expanded book series to market. Wouldn't you like to be a part of this as well? Your pledge will help make this a reality. This will help pay for editing, cover design and other expenses.
Help me spread the word. If you know of someone who might be interested in this project, please pass the word on. If you have any questions, please post a comment.
Risks and challenges
This is the third volume in this series. I have a good idea of how long it takes to write these sort of books. The pervious two volumes were Kickstarter projects that were completed on time. Because of this the risks are minimal. However, if something unforeseen happens, I will do my best to complete the project and keep backers informed.
Other risks.... A black-ops government agency unleashing a "SkyNet" scenario, would be a setback for sure. Large civilization ending meteors are bad too.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
