About the Book
I need your support to write the first book in a series of books explaining Artificial Intelligence (AI) in a mathematically gentle way. The series will be called "Artificial Intelligence for Humans". The book that I am proposing for this Kickstarter campaign is Volume 1: Fundamental Algorithms. The other volumes will likely follow as future Kickstarter projects. This project only covers volume 1.

This cover illustrates why I need your support! Does it look like a cover created by a programmer pretending to be a graphic artist? Yeah! That is exactly what I was doing. Its a mock-up. Pledges would help hire a professional to create a better cover. It is also best for me to not play editor either! So if you see a grammatical error on this page, I apologize. Some things are best left to professionals. This is why I need your support. Producing a book is by no means free!
This is not my first time producing a book. Let me introduce myself! My name is Jeff Heaton. I've written books as an Indie Author, as well as through large publishing houses. I am an author, active blogger, lead developer on the Encog Machine Learning Framework open source project, and have produced over 100 YouTube videos covering a wide array of AI topics.
This is an Indie project and I will create both:
- A physical paperback book
- A DRM-Free PDF, Kindle, ePub and MOBI ebook
The physical paperback will be sold on Amazon and elsewhere.
About the Book
The following video shows more about what the book will cover. This video also serves as a 10 minute 10,000 foot overview of the fundamentals of AI.
To have a great building you must have a great foundation. This book teaches Artificial Intelligence algorithms such as dimensionality, distance metrics, clustering, error calculation, Hebb's rule, the Delta Rule, hill climbing and linear regression. These algorithms allow you to process and recognize patterns in data. This is how sites such as Amazon and NetFlix suggest products to you.
These are not just foundational algorithms for the rest of the series. These algorithms are very useful in their own right. All algorithms are explained with actual numeric calculations that you can perform yourself.
The paperback edition of this book will be between 200-300 pages. DRM-Free ebooks will also be available as PDF, Kindle, MOBI and ePub. The ebook will sell for around $10 (USD). The paperback will sell for around $20-30, depending on exact printing costs. The tentative table of contents is as follows.

About the Series
Most AI books assume you just walked off a university campus having aced Calculus and Linear Algebra. These books are full of formulas and very short on examples.
The volumes planned in this series are as follows. Only volume 1 is covered by this Kickstarter project.

Why this Book?
Do you really want a book full of equations like this???
If you do, then you are in luck! There are already quite a few such books. Such a book is not my focus. I want to expand on successful book I wrote a few years ago. This book taught the mathematics of neural networks assuming that the reader only basic college algebra knowledge. By "college algebra" I mean the knowledge any computer programmer or business person who performs modestly complex calculations on Excel would have.
With this assumption I blaze a path right up to Calculus and Linear Algebra teaching ONLY what you need, and backing it up with examples. I also leave no unusual looking Greek symbol unexplained.
This book did well. It now holds the #1 spot on Amazon.COM (USA) if you perform a search on "Neural Networks". (see for yourself)
That is my book! And now I want to do the same thing, only bigger! By the way, this is NOT a cover I did myself. Some of the pledges will be used to produce a cover similar to this for Volume 1.
AI is Coming of Age! (seriously)
Why learn AI? AI does have a major "coolness factor". Many people jump into AI for this reason alone. However, in recent years AI is becoming more important.
Why is AI important? Seriously AI is coming of age this time! I know AI has been "coming of age" since the 1950's.
The amount of computer data in the world increasing at an amazing rate. This is thrusting many AI related concepts into the mainstream. How many of these terms have you seen in the media lately?
Terms such as Business Intelligence, Data Mining, Predictive Modeling, Big Data and Data Science are all, in various degrees, connected to AI. The world has more data that it can wrap its head around!
Cloud computing is also helping to allow Big Data to be analyzed by AI. Amazon EC2 allows you to quickly command a large cluster of computers to process Big Data tasks.
Harvard Business Review even called "Data Scientist" the sexiest job of the 21st century! (link)
There you go! AI can even help your love life!

Risks and challenges
