This project is the 9th installment of my ongoing effort to re-create my old TSR / Dungeons & Dragons artwork – which was destroyed* by some thoughtless functionary to make room in TSR’s files. Last time, I re-created twelve drawings from the original 1980 edition of the AD&D book called ‘Deities and Demigods’. This time I’m re-creating four full-color paintings from the covers of four different AD&D adventure modules.
T1 Village of Hommlet (Back Cover)
D3 Vault of the Drow (Back Cover)
X1 Isle of Dread (Front Cover)
S2 White Plume Mountain (Front Cover)
This is "Part 1", because I intend to re-create more of my AD&D module cover paintings in future Kickstarters.
Listen to an interview including a discussion of my efforts to re-create the lost TSR art here. The new artwork will be posted to my DeviantArt page (jeffdee.deviantart.com) as it's completed, so you can see how they turned out.
Stretch goals are unlocked when the total amount pledged reaches the following levels:
$5000: I will produce a 4 to 8 page dungeon adventure (Title: JD1, "Cess-Pit of the Bog Mother"), a dungeon on a swamp & muck theme for characters of level 1-3 in the style of the adventures on which my paintings appeared. The adventure will include a simple map, but no artwork. Every backer will receive a PDF copy of this adventure!
$5500: JD1 Cess-Pit of the Bog Mother gets a black & white, pen & ink drawing on the cover, and a fancier full-page map with textures and shading.
$6000: JD1 Cess-Pit of the Bog Mother gets a black & white cover painting!
$6500: JD1 Cess-Pit of the Bog Mother comes with two 1/4 page black and white illustrations.
$7000: JD1 Cess-Pit of the Bog Mother gets a color cover!
This project is dedicated to the memory of my eldest brother David, who had no idea what a favor he did me when he introduced me to D&D.
*Note: A few pieces are known to have survived, but in most cases there's no way to know. I am therefor re-creating everything.
Risks and challenges
This project essentially follows the same model as my 8 previous TSR art re-creation projects. The only significant difference is that this one consists entirely of full-color paintings, rather than black & white illustrations.
This shouldn't pose any difficulties. I've done color work as well as black & white throughout my professional career, and in fact my second project (Q1: Queen of the Demonweb Pits) included a painting without incident.
I did recently go through a period where I'd fallen behind on delivering backer rewards. I've been working hard to get back on track, and I foresee no difficulties in delivering the backer rewards for this project in July.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
