The Anxious Taxidermist is a quirky, off-kilter musical series written & created by Aurora Florence and Jeff Dickamore of Saint Norma Jean Productions, & co-produced with Katie & Jacob Schwarz of Mystery Box. The story follows Marie, a young woman who uses her secret passion for taxidermy to cope with debilitating anxiety.
Not just any anxiety--but the kind that can really knock you flat. In portraying characters with these issues, we are hoping to reduce the stigma around mental health and get people thinking and talking more about it. To start some conversations. We are also aiming to use the musical elements of the show to help us all better understand what it's like to live with anxiety. We have done our best to be careful in doing so--consulting with two fantastic therapists: Tony Overbay (check out his podcast "The Virtual Couch") and Paul Peterson.
And not just any taxidermy--but an art form that uses only found animals (the kind you find on the side of the road) and antiques (the kind you find at a garage sale). If you're curiosity is piqued, Google "Rogue Taxidermy." It's a whole artistic movement we stumbled upon last fall. We've since collaborated and consulted with two artists, Hollie Dilley & Jillian Abernathy, for two commissioned pieces for the pilot episode.
*No squirrels were harmed in the making of this pilot.
**But two were scavenged off the highway.
Through the combined efforts of an incredible team (see list below), plus some extra help from friends and family, we wrapped production of the twenty-minute pilot episode on September 20. The footage looks incredible, the three studio recorded songs sound amazing, but we need your help to finish things up and spread the word!
Our goal with this Kickstarter campaign is to cover:
- $1500 in construction materials
- $2500 to cover post-production costs--everything that will make the final film look and sound amazing
- $500 to cover the rewards
- Anything beyond that will go towards festival submissions & additional recording for the score.
Long term, our goal is to build an audience & support system that will allow us to carry the story beyond the initial pilot episode.
THANK YOU for contributing to The Anxious Taxidermist in whatever way you can! Every dollar & every share not only helps, but means the world to us.
Jeff & Aurora
