Update #18

News for the new year!

Friends:

Happy New Year!

Thanks to your generosity the third edition of Guatemala: eterna primavera, eterna tiranía is fully funded and will be distributed in Guatemala's public schools throughout 2012. The remaining copies will be sold below cost in Guatemala City. We expect the book to sell out, just like the last edition, since it is the only set of color photographs that documents the height of Guatemala's civil war.

If you would like to hear more about the book and the circumstances surrounding its publication, tune in tomorrow, Monday, January 2nd at 11am EST, to the following radio program hosted by Ashoka fellow Kara Andrade: http://www.blogtalkradio.com/hablaguate/2012/01/02/mesa-pblica-with-hablacentro. Kara and I will discuss historical memory with respect to Guatemala's war and the role of photography in preserving such memories. A second lesser topic relates to a lawsuit filed last month in Guatemala charging over fifty individuals including myself with involvement in terrorist actions carried out over 40 years ago. The lawsuit is frivolous for lots of reasons, but it is clear that the complainant wishes to quash publication of our new edition of Guatemala: eterna primavera, etran tiranía.

Finally, rewards! All rewards with the exception of the 2012 edition of the book will be sent out over the next month. If your reward is the 2012 book or includes the book as part of a larger reward, you will receive it in early March 2012.

Again, our deepest thanks for your generosity and for your interest in Guatemala.

Best wishes,
Jean-Marie Simon and the Kickstarter team

Dear Jean-Marie, I'm back in Panajachel at Lake Atitlan, Guatemala, and am horrified to find out someone is suing you and others for "terrorist actions." Let me know what I can do to help. Have you set up a second fund for donations to help fight this action and preserve the publication of this all-important book? I am on a very tight budget but will donate what I can, just as i was able to do for your wonderful book coming out. I'm sure many others feel exactly the same way. Let us all know what we can do to continue to help! CatherineTodd2 at gmail dot com.
