Let's stay in touch:
As a Frenchman from Jewish origin, I am married to an American from California. Whatever your background may be, you bring your perspective. This is multiculturalism. This is where I find a thriving artistic potential. This is where the title of my upcoming debut jazz album, “The Beauty Of Differences,” derives its name as an invitation to open our eyes in a new way. It is a celebration of the richness of this earth and everything that its holds, including our fellow humanity.
Thank you for taking the time to learn about this project. To bring this album to life, I need your support and the support of generous donors who care about our multicultural context and want to see the art it inspires. But even better, once the album is produced, the proceeds of its sales will go to Villages in Partnership to ensure families in an underdeveloped part of the world have clean drinking water.
After living 30 years in Paris, my wife and I moved to the US. I was ready to start anew, with a blank page in front of me. I had been playing with lots of different musicians in many settings, but I had yet to do my own project with my own music. I composed intensely. It has been a spiritual journal, recording in music the changes which have occurred in my inner being amid difficult events throughout the world.
All this is in the 8 compositions on the album. They’re full of life and its changes, with all its questions, from the small embryo to the expansive cosmos. Now, with your support they will come to life in my first studio album and bring life in the form of clean water for our sisters and brothers in Malawi.
I composed and arranged the music for quintet: piano, upright bass, drums, tenor saxophone and guitar. I'm thankful to have some wonderful musicians onboard, including the traditional Indian singer Vinod Gnanaraj making a guest appearance on the title track. I also have the support of a label, Misfitme music. Its founder Enoch Smith Jr. has already been a key logistical help for the project.
You can meet some of my musicians in these videos :
Update: Also on two tracks we will welcome Tierney Sutton!
Misfitme Music is a small independent label which will sell the album, promote it as part of their library, give me access to a studio, sound engineer, publisher, pressing company and other partners, and they will follow up with me along the way to make sure the project succeeds. We are working together for mutual success!
Every project released with this label has to contain a service component. Therefore, another unique feature of this album is to get rid of the consumer market and enter in a giving/receiving economy. What I mean is that 90% of the sales after production will fund the excavation of wells in Malawi, in the Sakata region. The remaining 10% will go towards a re-release when the album sells out.
I want all the future sales of “The Beauty Of Differences” to support a small organization with a tangible impact, so that together we could see the album sustain life. I decided that rather than being overwhelmed by global inequalities, we can start with a place which needs help, and where help is possible.
Malawi is the poorest country in Africa. Most people there live with less than a dollar a day. I happen to know personally the founder of this small organization, Villages in Partnership.
They’ve been partnering for ten years with local professionals and families. They have a program which excavates wells. Water is really a critical issue. Most families in this rural region of Sakata have to walk for miles every morning to gather their potable water for the day. Bringing closer access to potable water is the first step to bringing about important changes in the community.
With this album, you can join me in helping families to gain the most basic of life sustaining needs: water.
And concretely because of your help, for every 250 CDs we sell after this campaign we'll be able to finance the excavation of one well. Which will sustain the daily water needs for up to three hundred people.
Simple math: Every CD sold because of your investment today will sustain at least one person for their entire life.
Absolutely ! Here you go, I did a little graphic version :
As you saw in the budget, the Kickstarter goal of this campaign will only get us so far. To accomplish the whole vision of the project (a marketing campaign and a stock CD that we will be able to sell in order to fund the wells) we need your help to go a little farther.
I followed the usual crowd-funding guidelines by establishing the minimum budget that would allow me to send some great rewards to each of you who support this project.
My hope is to reach 250% funding !
If your support puts us beyond that, it will finance the touring costs (transportation and housing) for presenting and promoting the album in the U.S. and in France.
Yes, I'm happy to share some extracts of my work with you below. Just to let you know, these are demo tracks. On the album, each musician will beautifully interpret the music with real instruments, bringing their soul to what they play and the result will be awesome! (I hope you’re now as excited as me. Yes, I can't wait.)
Thank you, and yes! The song will be performed in a quintet on the album, but I’m happy to share with you our duo version, which features Michael Bond on piano.

Risks and challenges
I am planning to record in early May.
Matching the availability of the different contributors is my challenge right now. But the advantage of being so close to NYC is that there are many amazing musicians, studios and sound engineers available. And Misfitme music has a lot of trusted partners, so I don't panic, your contribution will ensure this project happens.
