Put on your apron and grab your mixing bowls as you vie for ribbons in the cake decorating contest at the Carroll County Fair. Create the tallest, most beautiful cakes by stacking layer upon layer of frosted sweetness. Will you go slow and steady to create a few cakes with extreme precision? Or rush to submit your cakes ahead of the competition? Draw or draft cards to build cakes up to five layers tall. Elbow your opponents to get the types of cake (chocolate or vanilla) and frosting flavors (five fruits, plus a wild) you need to win ribbons in six categories. Only one player may win each ribbon, so you’ll have to swipe, swap, and squeeze your way to victory. Some ribbons are worth more than others. Choose carefully which ones you go for in this race to outmaneuver other contestants.

The PDF files contain the following items:

  • 60 delicious cake cards
  • 6 unique character cards
  • 18 fancy ribbon cards
  • 6 judging stand mats
  • 18 action cards
  • 6 reference cards
  • 1 instruction booklet

Files are provided for both double-sided printers and single-sided printers (collated so you can flip the entire stack over and feed the paper back through the printer). Images have bleed areas to accommodate small alignment adjustments.

 OVERVIEW

Stack cake layers from largest to smallest, bottom to top.

Submit your finished cake to be judged, and win a ribbon. The ribbon you get depends on several qualities.

The color of the ribbon you win depends on the height of your cake. Three-layer cakes win white ribbons, four-layer cakes win red ribbons, and five-layer cakes win blue ribbons.

Earn more points for cakes that are all chocolate or all vanilla.

You can also try and build cakes that are all different frosting flavors, or all the same.

For the most points, go for tall cakes that are all the same cake flavor, and all the same or all different frosting flavors.

The first player to score 31 or more points wins! (Required point total varies for 5 or 6 players).

STRATEGY

Of course, there’s more to it than that!

Getting Cards: Each turn, you’ll either test your luck by drawing the top card of the deck, or draft a visible card that someone else has passed. You don’t have to play the card you drew, but if you pass it, you make it available for someone else. And it might just be the very card they need to complete the perfect cake!

Ribbons: The easiest ribbons to get are worth fewer points. The ribbons that are worth the most may take some time to acquire – time your opponents will use to snatch up other ribbons! Choose your strategy wisely, keep an eye on your opponents, and be prepared for last minute changes to your plan.

Trickery: Need some extra help? Use your three action cards to thwart the competition or boost the quality of your cake! A swap card lets you exchange a layer you’ve already placed with a different one. Swipe lets you steal from another player. And squeeze lets you sneak a larger layer under a smaller layer. Feeling really strategic? Combine them to sweeten your victory!

Questions you'll ask during game play:

  • Should I take a layer I don't want to prevent an opponent from getting what they want? Or do I do what's best for me and allow them to possibly get more points?
  • How long do I wait to get what I want for the perfect cake? If I try but don't make it, will I still be able to submit this cake for a lesser value ribbon?
  • Is it worth it for me to swipe from an opponent? Or is the risk of retaliation too great?

Honorable - $1. Join the mailing list and be kept up to date on game development. You'll also get access to the pledge manager in case you want to upgrade your pledge after the campaign.

Premium - $3. Get a high quality, printable PDF version of the game.

Prestigious - $5. Take your cake building game to a higher level and get 60 cake stickers you can use to display your love of cakes on your phone, tablet, laptop...anywhere! You also get the printable PDF version of the game.

Showcase  - $60. Become an ambassador for the game before it's available in print! Plus, your name will be listed on a thank you card distributed with the game.

While I'm pretty proud of how far this game has come, to push it further will take some investment. The more successful this campaign is, the more I can put into marketing and upgrades to help launch the full production version in the future.

$500 - 10 demo copies from BoardGamesMaker.com, to send to reviewers and place in local businesses and libraries, etc.

$1000  - Allows us to also place an ad on BoardGameGeek to promote the campaign.

$1500 - At this level, Jealous Cat Games will be able to host an exhibitor's demo table at the World Boardgame Championship, taking place from July 21 to July 29 at Seven Springs Resort in Pennsylvania.

$2000 - The additional funds will be used for ads on Facebook to reach families and casual gamers who don't frequent the usual sites.

$2500+ - More representation at cons! More ads! More cake!

"It has all the charm of a baking show, mixed in with set collection and strategic dilemmas." - Casual Game Revolution.

"It's very pretty – somewhat dainty and sweet, just like the perfect cake." - Girls Play Games

"We went into this hoping it would be good, but it's great...highly recommended!" - The Cardboard Kid

Risks and challenges

Thanks for your interest in Carroll County Cake Swap - Print and Play! If you've read this far, then I know you get a special excitement out of seeing the dreams of a small game design company (a guy, his cat, their apartment in Frederick, MD) come to life!

Carroll County Cake Swap - Print and Play is the first project for Jealous Cat Games on Kickstarter, but it's really just the start of something bigger. With feedback and funds from the Print and Play, I'll be able to launch a campaign for the full production version of the game, and continue making improvements to the game.

Many large game companies launch games on Kickstarter now with huge budgets. I'm not one of those companies. Your help with this project can help me scale up to something amazing.

As for delivery - the files for this project are already prepared. All I have to do is send you a link! The biggest risk is that I don't have accurate contact info for you - so please verify upon completing your pledge that your contact information is correct. I'll follow up with a pledge manager at the conclusion of the campaign.

If you're opting for the Showcase level (thank you!), be assured that I have printed my current demo copies from www.boardgamesmaker.com and the quality is excellent. But I'm running out and need to print more. (They're a little pricey since they are being printed in such small batches).

If anything out of the ordinary occurs, I'll be sure to provide updates and keep you informed. Thank you for partnering with me in this venture!
