What Is Ice Will Reveal?
Ice Will Reveal is my first published novel: a fantasy adventure told from multiple points of view whose “twists and turns thrill the reader with action and intrigue while providing a fresh take on familiar fantasy themes of prophecy, destiny and choice”. It will be published by Hadley Rille Books on November 29th, 2012. I am proud of the book and thrilled to be published by a quality independent press like Hadley Rille, and I want to help this book (and my publisher) get the attention and recognition it needs in order to reach a wider audience.
What Is the Funding Needed For?
The short version is, I need financial assistance for a specific marketing campaign to introduce my first novel to a targeted audience who otherwise might not know about it. The concept is simple. If you were going to buy my book to support me anyway, I’m hoping you might be willing to contribute a little extra to support me further in providing an additional book for someone else to read and enjoy. You get one, they get one, I get extra eyeballs. Everybody wins!
For those of you who want the long and more specific version, let me tell you a story.
As a new author, it is especially critical to get my name—and my work—in front of others in my industry. Promoting my books will encourage people to read a new author, which in turn will hopefully help generate positive awareness and possibly even garner me some reviews (which ideally lead to additional sales and possibly even award considerations). And the better my first novel does, the better the chance will be that I can get the sequel published, and the better the chance that I will be able to make writing a career, not just a hobby.
My publisher and I have targeted the annual World Fantasy Convention as the most advantageous opportunity to put my book into the hands of new readers who are passionate about fantasy fiction. The World Fantasy Convention is a big trade conference attended by approximately 900 publishers, agents, authors, reviewers and others involved in the production of fantasy fiction. One of the perks of attending that convention is that each attendee is given a big bag full of books when they arrive. Those books are donated by publishers and authors, in hopes of attracting additional attention for their books and brands from others in the industry.
While I am delighted at being published by such a great press as Hadley Rille Books, the truth is that independent small press publishers have very tiny marketing budgets. My publisher simply could not afford to donate a large quantity of hard copies of Ice Will Reveal for the book bags at this year’s World Fantasy Convention, which is happening in Toronto from 11/1/12 through 11/4/12.
My very specific goal is to print and ship an extra 100 copies of Ice Will Reveal to put in the book bags at the World Fantasy Convention in Toronto this November. It’ll cost me approximately $600 to do so, and then on top of that I’ll have to buy and ship about the same amount of autographed copies to all of my supporters. Add some Kickstarter and Amazon Payments fees in on top of that, and you wind up with about a $1200 outlay. I felt certain that I could raise that amount of money through Kickstarter, so I made a deal with Hadley Rille to print the extra books. Now I need your help to make good on this deal. Are you with me?
What Do You Get If You Contribute?
Most importantly, you’ll get to feel good about supporting an indie author whom you hopefully care about, as I prepare to launch not only this book but also my career as an author. But also very important: if you donate at least $10, you’ll get an advance copy of a great fantasy adventure book to read yourself or to pass on to people you know who love fantasy fiction (remember, the book doesn’t officially become available until November 29th, so you’ll get the first look). And your donation also supports stuffing a book into a promotional book bag that will be handed out to attendees of the World Fantasy Convention. So you get a book, they get a book, and I get the extra attention that will give my first novel a shot at a wider fan base.
Any amount you want to pledge will be helpful, though you can look over on the side bar to see specifics about what rewards I’m offering for what amounts. Remember that with Kickstarter, it’s an all-or-nothing funding proposition—if I don’t get pledges for the full $1200 amount, I won’t get anything (yikes!) However, if I wind up generating more than $1200 through this campaign (and wouldn’t THAT be awesome!), I will use the extra funds generated to do additional marketing and publicity projects to help me generate that all-important “buzz”. Possibilities include: creating a promotional book release party here in my hometown, sending additional print copies directly to reviewers, creating and promoting contests and giveaways for readers, donating books to libraries, and renting table/booth space at local cons and other events in order to sell the book directly.
But what is the book about? I hear you asking. Here is the blurb from the back of the book:
(I don’t want to tell you too much more because I don’t want to give the adventure away!)
If you'd like to sample my writing style and get a feel for the two main characters of the book (siblings Whisper and Jarrod), I have posted a "sneak preview" of the first two chapters of the book on my website. Click here to read them online.
If you’ve read this far, thank you. And thank you for considering a pledge to help me launch this book and my career as I take these first fumbling steps towards living my lifelong dream of becoming a successful author. :)
