Chicken Time Warp is a party game for 3-6 players that takes around 30 minutes to play.

What's in the box?

  • 1 instruction manual
  • 6 cheat sheet cards
  • 6 character cards
  • 11 timeline cards
  • 54 game play cards

In the game, the players take on the role of a group of chicken scientists who unintentionally open an endless time vortex while experimenting with time travel. The object of the game is to acquire the Escape Pod and use it to escape the vortex, leaving your opponents behind to live out the rest of their days in timeless pandemonium.

The gameplay centers around the timeline which counts down the minutes to when the Escape Window will be open, and the Escape Pod can be used to leave the vortex (and win the game). One timeline card gets turned over before each player's turn moving you closer and closer to the open escape window.

In addition the timeline is used to keep track of when players die. If a player draws a "You Dead" card and has no way to avoid death in their hand, they set their character card near the minute on the timeline when they died. More about this in the "Time Travel" section.

The game naturally breaks up into two phases. In the first phase you are using your hand to try to discover who has the Escape Pod. You can do this by "peek-a-booing" an opponent, swapping hands with them or stealing a specific card.

At some point in the game the whole group will become aware of who has the Escape Pod. This is where the real fun begins. In this phase, each player is trying to steal the Escape Pod and play it when the Escape Window timeline card is turned over. There are lots of ways to stop this from happening and this creates some chaotic back and forth as the Escape Pod card bounces from player to player.

The most unique thing about Chicken Time Warp is the element of time travel as a game mechanic. The Clux Capacitor card allows you to go back in time (by turning 3 timeline cards back to face down).

You can do this in order to prevent the Escape Window from opening, or to come back alive after dying, which sometimes unintentionally brings other dead players back to life.

You can read the full detailed instruction manual at http://www.chickentimewarp.com/play

The constantly moving timeline combined with people dying and coming back to life, all while everyone tries to steal the Escape Pod is why one of our play tester's said:

Want to know more? Here's a video where I explain how I came up with the idea for the game. Spoiler, it involves a real-life time traveling chicken! (kind of):

I've play-tested this game extensively and iterated through version after version to get the gameplay just right. The game has morphed quite a bit from what it was when I first thought of it. Here are some of the different versions of cards including the first notebook sketch where I thought of the idea, the Sharpie hand-drawn prototype, as well as the first professionally printed version, compared to the finished product:

I think the game is pretty dang amazing, but I might be biased. Here's what other people have said about Chicken Time Warp:

Unfiltered Gamer gives a short "how to play" and walk-through and then gives his assessment:

My philosophy on stretch goals is that you should get the highest quality version of the game, with every necessary card/piece/widget just for backing the campaign. Rest assured, when you back Chicken Time Warp, you are getting a complete game with the highest quality linen finish cards and a nice matte finish 2 piece box.

My stretch goal rewards come in the form of 2 expansion packs that extend an already complete and awesome game.  All backers will receive these expansion packs when the stretch goals are met.

This game wouldn't exist without help from the following people:

  • My wife Erin for not walking out on me when I told her I wanted to make a game about chickens
  • My kids and very first play testers: Gracie, Sam and Jonas
  • My nephews Grady and Roscoe who spent time at the family reunion playing a very early (very lame) prototype
  • Jeff Thorup and Garrett Anderson for helping me take the game to the next level
  • Play Testers Extraordinaire: Michael Cañar, Brittany Brackenbury, Travis Jeppson, Paul English, Mitch Monsen, Brent Singleton, Calvin Shell, Mike Zarbock, Linds Everill, Matt Poulson, Had Soffe, Daniel Van Tassell, Nathan Davis, Lyle Christensen, Sean Lewis, and Lance Walker
  • Jeff's whole family for making Chicken Time Warp a weekly habit and sending me questions whenever they had them

Thanks!

Risks and challenges

This is a pretty low risk project. The artwork is 100% done. I've got 20 years experience in printing. I have printed copies of the game at a small printer and am already working closely with the larger printer that I'll be using once the project funds. They have printed multiple large Kickstarter projects and have the process down. The biggest risk is that a future version of myself travels back in time, smashes my computer with a baseball bat and tells me, "It didn't work out man".
