About

CINEMATIC THRILLS, HIGH SEAS ADVENTURE

Scarlet Seas is both a gothic vampire tale and classic swashbuckler rolled into one rollicking adventure. It's meant to harken back to the wide-screen sea pictures of Errol Flynn, while having the atmosphere of the Universal horror films like Dracula. Except, that this cinematic rollercoaster will viewed in the form of a graphic novel.

Fugitive Vampire

The title Scarlet Seas refers to our femme fatale, Lady Scarlet Dragonuv. She is a lost descendant of European aristocracy who lives in secret among the quiet villages of Romania in the late 17th Century.

Similar to figures like Vlad Tepes and Lady Elizabeth Bathory, both whom were the inspirations for Bram Stoker's Dracula, Lady Scarlet is a dark and powerful figure. She is a vampire or wampyr as the locals say. Scarlet maintains a demure air of aristocracy, while barely veiling the violent monster inside.

But, surely such creatures of the night are myth. Aren't they?

Knowing her time in Europe grows short as the years pass and her enemies draw nearer, Scarlet makes a bold plan to relocate herself to the New World. A place where she can start anew and become even more powerful.

Brave Hunters

In dogged pursuit of Scarlet and her kind is Hans Von Illsbrook and his daughter Alana Von Illsbrook. For nearly two decades, the Von Illsbrooks have hunted and destroyed untold numbers of terrors across Europe. However, Scarlet may be the most insidious and powerful force they've yet encountered.

At some point early in his life, Hans was a scholarly youth who traveled the nations to broaden his horizons and study the world. During his travels through the mountains of Romania, he met an alluring and stunningly beautiful gypsy woman. The two briefly courted before being swept up in a young marriage and the romance of a starting a family.

Not long after the birth of their first child, a lovely girl with her mother's dark eyes and raven hair, tragedy stuck. Something monstrous murdered Hans' love and the mother of his child right before his eyes. It looked human but was far from it.

Since that horrible day, Hans studied the wampyr and dedicated himself to their eradication. Whether it was his intention or not, Alana grew up in the same pursuit. Her childhood ripped from her, she learned how to use a crossbow and how to kill vampires with nearly anything at her disposal.

The two hunters and their assistants, Russian brothers Mikhail and Gustav, earned a reputation for protecting the people and driving the beasts from villages across Europe. The vampire themselves soon learned that even they could find something to fear.

Cutthroat Pirates

Jeremiah Frost and his crew of black-hearted buccaneers ply the waters preying on whatever hapless ship their gun-laden galleon comes across.

Unfortunately for the dreaded pirates, they are about to come across something far more fearful and blood-thirsty than themselves. And for Scarlet, having a crew of willing and deadly servants is only her first step in conquering the New World.

She has plans on turning these loathsome cutthroats into an army at her disposal.

Caribbean Nightmare

The islands have held tales of cutthroats and brigands from the Golden Age of Pirates. They've been a source of adventure and excitement for centuries. On the darker side, gothic tales and chilling stories of blood-thirsty vampires stalking the night have caused many a nightmare down through the ages. Scarlet Seas blends these elements in their nostalgic glory.

Armin Ozdic's wonderful art will take you deep into the dark realm of Scarlet Dragonuv and her minions in a tale written by screenwriter J.C. Young.

The Writer

J.C. Young writes freelance as a screenwriter for hire. Several of his works have been optioned in the last few years, including Boost (an homage to the car chase and caper movies of the 70's) which is in development at Americana Studios.

He maintains a profile on LinkedIn and DeviantArt, where a number of his works can be viewed or downloaded.

In addition, J.C. is also a regular contributor to Gameskinny.com, a gaming news and culture site as well being a loving husband, father of three boys and assistant cat herder at home.

The Artist

Armin Ozdic is a young artist and student in Sarajevo (Bosnia and Herzegovina), attending the Academy of Fine Arts at the University of Sarajevo. His love of comics and the comic book format show strongly in his works.

Still attending school, Armin maintains art blogs on DeviantArtblogspot and Tumblr as well as accepts commission work.

It was his striking style that caught the author's eye. Can Armin draw a horror story?

I'd say yes.

The Goal

Scarlet Seas began its life as a feature film screenplay with dreams of someday making it to the big screen.

What reviewers have said about the original Scarlet Seas screenplay:

"...a rousing good tale full of blood and swash. The story nicely combines the vampire myth with pirates on the bounding main. Damn good stuff."

"I picked up your script to review mainly because of the premise – vampires and pirates on the high seas. Sounded like an entertaining, action-packed adventure and you didn’t disappoint me on those counts. I really enjoyed the read. Your writing style is very engaging."

"This vampire doesn't suck!"

"Scarlet Seas jumps right into the action early, and doesn't have any moments where it lets up. This screenplay has all that an avid fan of the genre would enjoy."

"Entertaining and fun..."

"This was so much fun. You took the well worn vampire genre, and put a totally original spin on it. The result was a real page turner."

But, asking a Kickstarter project to fund an entire independent feature film is beyond the scope of just two artists, even with a great story and great art.

Lately, Hollywood has turned its eyes to the comic book and graphic novel stands in the past several years. With many successful blockbusters and even smaller indy projects based on comics or graphic novels giving such big returns, many studios are looking for the next big thing.

Sample Storyboard
Sample Storyboard

Movies in development create storyboards. They look like comic strips, but are a visual method filmmakers use to get their vision across to all involved. They show characters, camera angles, action, even dialog.

As a graphic novel, Scarlet Seas has a better chance of being noticed by the film community, because comics and graphic novels are like watching a storyboard for a film. Once the project is complete, copies of the graphic novel will be forwarded to various production companies, studios and agents to show them it's potential.

We would love to see Scarlet Seas sailing into cinemas and this project is a first and more realistic step than asking hundreds of producers and studio executives to read one screenplay amongst the thousands they receive every year.

However, this is not to say that any success as a publication won't go unappreciated. First-run hand-numbered printed hardcover copies will be made available. Softcover copies and digital copies of the graphic novel and Armin's sketches would be available for download or direct purchase online.

The Kickstarter

Our initial goal is $30,000.

This number is based on a breakdown of publishing, packaging and shipping costs for copies and incentives as well as compensating Armin for the hours and hours of work he will be putting in bringing J.C.'s story to vivid life.

The goal is 750 printed first editions, plus 250 limited hardcover versions. If however, we get a great response on the hardcover, that number could be changed.

The funds raised will cover artist's commissions (which include the commissioned art incentives), shipping, promotional materials in addition to publishing costs.

As with any investment, we cannot guarantee the project will reach its eventual goal of becoming a feature film, but we can assure you that will be making every effort to have the finished graphic novel project ready by April/May 2014 for distribution.

The Rewards

Any assistance in getting our ship to sail will be greatly appreciated.

We will be posting thank you's on our Facebook page as we go along and all contributors will have their names listed on special pages in the back of the graphic novel (Unless ye say nay).

Our initial reward levels (Greenhorn & Deck Hand) include digital copies of the finished graphic novel. Able Seaman levels will receive a digital sketchbook of Armin's art and a digital copy of J.C. Young's original Scarlet Seas screenplay.

Backers can also opt for even better rewards, which include hardcopies of the graphic novel, printed copies of the sketch book, and script. How about a Scarlet Seas T-shirt?

The highest three levels will include hardcover copies with certificates signed by the author and artist. Also, our premier backers have an opportunity to be immortalized in Scarlet Seas where their likeness will be used for a minor character or even a character with a speaking role.

You could become a pirate, vampire, soldier, sailor, villager or hapless victim of Scarlet herself.

Risks and challenges

Art is not a science in that one cannot use a formula for success that always applies and will always produce the same results.

Scarlet Seas is an art project. No matter how much is put into it by the writer, artists and publisher, there is no guarantee that it will find its audience and be accepted by that audience.

There is also not a set production schedule like a factory. Art is done when its done. The writer, artists and publisher will know that when they see the final proofs. But our initial goal is to have Scarlet Seas ready to send out by May 2014.

To combat delays, as much pre-production will be done as possible. The script will have been adapted to comic format before the project goes live.

A set plan will be in place so both artist and writer are on the same page throughout the story before Page 1 is even sketched.

Character concepts, page layouts, and other details will also be made available publicly as the project moves forward. You will see bits and pieces of Scarlet's world to whet your appetite, but we won't give away any spoilers - other than that she's a monstrous vampire.

Arrangements with a publisher will be established before the project goes live as well, so final costs will not offset the funding.
