This realtime turn-based strategy game can quickly expand from a showdown of two players to an epic battle with four. Who will be the last survivor? This is Mortals, the first game for the Blinks Game System!
Wait, this is a Game SYSTEM?! I thought it was a board game?
It’s both! The Blinks Game System brings the responsiveness of video games to tabletop gaming. Absent of screens, the focus is hands-on. From flicking fun to brain-busting nail-biters, you can play a wide range of games with Blinks.
Games? There are other games besides Mortals?
There sure are! Each Blink is responsible for knowing how to play a single game. Kickstarter backers will receive 6 games on 6 Blinks (Which games depends on you!) Of course one is preloaded with Mortals and another with Fracture - a turn-based strategy game played between 3 or more players*. (*Requires 12 Blinks to play)
In Fracture, your mission is to make each of your Blinks happy.
To make a Blink happy, simply make sure it’s only making contact with Blinks of another color.
It’s easier said than done. There’s just one catch. (We love catches.) Blinks get lonely, so you can’t leave them alone. The only way to make all of the other Blinks happy is by working with the other players taking turns literally breaking the Fracture game board apart and re positioning it.
The goal is to make all colors completely happy at the same time. If at any time a single team is completely happy before the rest, we all lose. (For those of you who like to keep score don’t worry, there’s a competitive mode too!)
Are more games coming?
You betcha! We have games in the works from designers like…
Can anyone design games for Blinks?
Yep! Blinks are an Open Source platform! In addition to launching the Blinks Game System, Move38 gladly welcomes game designers to join the Blinks Developer Community. API Documentation is available for anyone interested in building games of their own. If you have your own ISP programmer all you need is the base set. No programmer? Back the Blinks Dev Kit and we’ll send one to you!
Over the past year, we've hosted a game jams, including Global Game Jam, Beyond Tabletop, and most recently Alt-ware Game Jam at IndieCade East 2018. Some of these game jam games have lead to games we will be releasing for Blinks.
I'm geeking out over this hardware, what's inside?
We can't share that... just kidding, we're totally sharing that. We spent so much time designing something that illuminates just right, feels weighty and comfortable in the hand, and is an open platform for play and curiosity. Did somebody say Arduino? We just did. Each Blink is essentially an Arduino, with a ridiculous amount of consideration to make them a platform for play. You'd be hard pressed to find a company that cares more about the details, we're excited that this excites you too.
Founded in 2016, Move38 seeks to delight hands, challenge minds, inspire curiosity and foster playfulness as a way of life. We believe we learn best when at play, and that our play shapes who we are.
In 2016, Move38 blew past expectations and raised over 360% on Kickstarter for their first product - Troxes. These interlocking paper cutouts encourage users creative freedom. Apartment Therapy described them as “a minimalist parent's best friend on road trips and flights.” Not only did they successfully fund the product, but in 2017 alone Move38 shipped over 100,000 of the cutouts. The same systems thinking that inspired Troxes also helped bring Blinks to life.

Games are Move38’s primary focus because they’re both ferociously compelling and have a proven ability to live in culture for thousands of years. Conceived and tested as a Playful Systems thesis project at the MIT Media Lab, Blinks bring the responsiveness of video games - long absent from traditional board games - to the world of tabletop gaming while preserving the opportunity to be both hands on and social.
A message from Jonathan: Without friends and family this wouldn't have been possible, but most importantly family. I am forever grateful for the support from Mom, Dad (2007), Jennifer, and Adam and my partner Jamie who has joined me on this journey. I look forward to sharing it with new friends and family starting right here.
Risks and challenges
We've shipped 3 successful Kickstarter campaigns, either meeting my deadlines or shipping early!! (Let's just say my Kickstarter backers think we're pretty great) This project has been in the works for the past 3 years so we have have had a chance to put it in front of many eyes and hands. While final tooling and Design for Manufacturing are next steps, we already have partners to make this transition smoothly. The most important part is to reach a minimum order quantity to bring this product to market.
Lastly, a very small yet another possible risk is that we might have too much fun shipping Blinks to all of y'all :) Thanks for supporting and spread the word! #GETBLINKSLearn about accountability on Kickstarter
