You aren’t in Kansas anymore, honeys. There is no Kansas. Turn up the magic, turn on the lights, and meet me under the Rainbow Bridge.
The Rainbow Bridge idea was born from a beautiful statue from the 1939 World's Fair in San Francisco; even then, rainbows were a symbol of the city, and today, it means even more to us. Rainbows symbolize the best in all of us, and in times like this, we want to emphasize that love.
Join us in finishing the Rainbow Bridge, destined for Black Rock City August 2018. The Rainbow Bridge will include 15,000 lbs of steel for the frame, clad with wood panels painted the iconic colors, and emblazoned with over 27,000 individually addressable LEDs. That is nearly 1 mile of total LEDS, and these will be sound-reactive and beautifully animated. This means that the experience of the Rainbow Bridge will be forever mutable, much like the experience of Burning Man itself. The apex of the walking platform of the Rainbow Bridge will be 30 feet high, giving participants a stunning view of the Playa and an opportunity to take in the event from a new, exciting perspective. A protective railing will run across the bridge at 40 inches high, so the view from above can be beautiful and safe. The Rainbow Bridge will bring iconic size, color, fun, and interactive whimsy to the Playa.
The sides of the Rainbow Bridge will have a few steep climbable stairs before reaching the main arching platform. Participants will walk the bridge from either side, engage with one another, and take in the whole Playa from the apex.
Aside from the natural community intrinsic to the Rainbow Bridge installation, the Bridge will host aerial silks performers, swings, DJ Performances (with LEDs programmed to react to the music), and a Reading Rainbow during the course of the festival. Most importantly, the Rainbow Bridge inherently welcomes everyone, a big bright reminder that will be built with love, and the intention of giving that love back to the community.
The Rainbow Bridge is helmed by artist Josh Zubkoff, with Srikanth Guttikonda leading the LED project. Last year's build team is returning on this project, and volunteers--from electrical engineers to structural engineers to welders to dreamers--are showing up a dozen strong each week at our workshop. Josh's 2017 Burning Man installation was Phoenicopterus Rex, a massive 40 foot tall climbable lawn flamingo that garnered attention from Rolling Stone, W Magazine, National Geographic, and Artnet.com.
Thank you for your help in making the Rainbow Bridge reality!

So says Wikipedia about the troll who lives under the bridge. Rewrite this story by being the Rainbow Bridge Troll, with this handmade rainbow troll onesie! Even better, wear it on Onesie Wednesday. Only 1 available.
$1000 - We will send you a laser cut 2-D wall hanging of the bridge, 3 feet long and lit up with mini-LED lights. Up to 3 available.
$2500 - Pledge $2500, and you'll have the 3-D maquette of the Rainbow Bridge, made to scale (1:24), and assembled with magnets. Only 1 available.
$5000 - For $5000, the artist will let us gently take his beard from his face! This beard has been through A LOT, and is quite luxurious to boot. We cannot promise that it will come with Playa dust, nor that it won't. Only 1 available.
We have a generous supporter paying for transportation, structural engineering, and our workshop space. Otherwise we're all volunteers. So roughly 80% of your money will go into materials, with the rest going to crowdfunding fees and rewards.

Risks and challenges
The team is well on their way with this project. RHBU engineers have completed the preliminary analysis and have designed the final structure. We have our build space and welder ready, and have started building the iron structure (so the Bridge is traverseable and stable). We will send you updates on our progress, or, check out our Instagram or Facebook page for ongoing videos and photos.
This team completed the Phoenicopterus Rex project for Burning Man last year, a 40-foot tall lawn flamingo. We learned a lot from that successful experience--how transportation costs can double, how to install something that large on the Playa, how to gather the volunteers needed for such an enormous project--and we're applying all of that knowledge with the Rainbow Bridge. We have a clear plan, with welders ready, engineers excited, a dozen weekly volunteers at the ready, and a whole new transportation plan (pre-made segments of the Bridge that make it easier to take into BRC and put together there without the need for cranes), and are ready to deal with the challenges that arise (like, buying steel for the frame right after tariffs were announced: new prices for steel!)
All to say: the plan is solid, and we'll be ready for the changes that come with an enormous Burning Man art piece. With your help, we've got this.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
