Thank you so much for your support. We did it!
What Backers are already saying:
"Cool bag. I'm glad I backed it. It really does fill a need. I've been looking for something like this but everything is too small, too tactical, too big, or a purse."
"EXACTLY what I need and I've been hunting for just such a bag since January!"
"Rarely back physical goods projects, but this is such smart design! Minimal and Perfectly Sized."
"Appreciate your quality made in USA work. Look forward to the bolstr. It's just what I've been looking for."
A Minimal Every Day Carry Obsession:
The pictures don't lie: Men are obsessed with their everyday carry (EDC) items. While "necessity" may vary from man to man, almost everyone tends to carry at least a smart phone, keys, and wallet. But sometimes we need more — sunglasses, a point-and-shoot camera, headphones, tablet, external battery, notepad, pens, pocketknife, or other "stuff."
Even with the convergence of technology (ie. smart phones), a few extra pockets can really make a difference for today’s Modern Man. Most of us do not want to lug around an oversized laptop bag, strap on a fanny pack, or carry some funky man purse, though, just to accommodate a few more EDC items — a particular hassle in warmer weather when the convenience of wearing another article of clothing for pockets is not an option.
Unsatisfied with other options available on the market, I set out to design a minimal, man-sized, everyday carry bag, somewhere between a laptop bag and a holster. After two years of prototyping and testing, the bolstr™ brand is ready to go.
bolstr Everyday Carry (EDC) Pouch
Bag-in-bag accessories are as boring as boxy laptop and tablet bags. Using the same asymmetrical bolstr Small Carry design approach, we came up with a clamshell Everyday Carry Pouch for cables, cords, extra batteries, a wallet or other other small items you want to keep tidy in your bag.
These clever pouches feature a snap pocket for fast access to headphones or charging cables. They also make for a fantastic transition item to help you stay organized between your bolstr Small Carry and a larger bag.
Available in Both Left and Right Sided Options:
The right sided bolstr Small Carry crosses over the left shoulder so the bag is on the right side (see the picture below). The opposite is true for the left handed bag. This is a well established industry standard, but ultimately it is a matter of preference. Therefore, we are making the bosltr Small Carry available is both options.
If you are unsure of what side you prefer, just throw on a messenger bag and then notice what side of the body it is on. It will be natural to you. Click here for a video explaining the difference between the two. NOTE: the bag used in the video is of the right sided variety.
Coming up with a simple everyday carry bag for guys was no easy task. The design considerations to get to something delightfully simple and functional seemed endless. Staying focused on the perfect, minimal everyday carry bag for guys and their smart phones, keys, wallets and just a few extras proved to a be a process of elimination more than anything else. If someone wants or needs more that just a few extra pockets, then bolstr probably is not for them. There are plenty of larger, boxy bag options already on the market; is there really a need to create another one?
It might be hard to tell by just looking at the bolstr Small Carry just how much thought went into the design of this bag, but once you put it on and start using it, it is sure to be appreciated.
Funds for this project will be used to produce the bolstr Small Carry Bag and EDC Pouch. Both products are available in two different colorways (Jet Black and Steel). Design and prototype work is complete, but we will need to purchase materials (i.e. fabric, zippers, etc.), and to cover labor costs for a large production run.
I worked with three different USA factories through the development and sampling process before settling on the one that meets our quality and turnaround needs. The manufacturer we chose is experienced with designing and making outdoor gear. I am confident that the bag you are getting is quality at its best. Importantly, I have worked closely with them on planning larger scale production and secured manufacturing time for this project. I am very pleased to have them on the team!
Upon the completion of this Kickstarter, bolstr will be sold online at Koyono.com and Amazon.com. I welcome opportunities to work with retailers.
Designed in Cleveland, OH and Made in USA.
Capacity and terms have been established with our manufacturer to have the first 1,000 bolstr Small Carry bags and EDC Pouches delivered in September (estimated). Once we clear our goal of $10,000, we will be able to start the manufacturing process. Please refer to the updates for further information on production with the new design changes and color options.
I will be sure to provide updates as the project progresses. That said, many wrinkles in the processes have been worked out and we are as ready as we will ever be to get your bolstr Small Carry bag to you!
I am a minimalist obsessed with transporting everyday carry stuff without overpacking and looking like a dork. In 2000 I started designing a travel coat concept (The BlackCoat) that has 14 pockets and is made from water proof materials mostly found in jackets made for outdoor activities. In 2003 I started Koyono.com to sell the BlackCoat, as well as a popular slim leather wallet known as the Slimmy®. It took a while, but I was able to develop an organic following, and went on to introduce several other minimal mobile lifestyle products.
Thank you in advance for supporting my Kickstarter project and I look forward to bringing you the very best everyday carry crossbody bag on the planet. Please be sure to spread the good minimalist word and help get bolstr on the map.
PS - I really was not streaking in the video and wore a very skimpy flesh colored Speedo for the shoot. It was all in the name of having good minimalist fun and I feel for streakers who need pockets too! But don't worry, I have no intention of trying to make Euro sunbathing attire mainstream in America... Taking on the man purse is where I draw the line.

Risks and challenges
The biggest challenge of the bolstr Small Carry project is getting our message out to as many Kickstarters as possible. It is humbling to be included with so many other amazing Kickstarter projects and I do not take the task of garnering attention lightly. While I am fortunate to have a loyal customer following for some of my other clothing and accessory designs, it has been a while since I have launched a new product that requires help beyond "the base." I am reaching out to friends, family, current customers and bloggers to get the word out about the bolstr Kickstarter.
I have been designing and manufacturing niche apparel and accessories for over 10 years. Most of the manufacturers I currently use do smaller run quantities. I also worked on larger scale projects in the past, and learned over the years how to maintain quality and hit deadlines. The company I am currently working with for the bolstr Small Carry Kickstarter I have been talking with for over a year, and am confident in the manufacturing process we developed together.
I know how important fulfilling orders in a timely manner is to the overall customer experience and have been using the same fulfillment company for close to 10 years. They ship reliably all around the world and we are confident in their ability to handle the bolstr Small Carry Kickstarter. If required, I and a small team are prepared to ship orders directly from the factory in order to decrease transit times.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
The retail price for the EDC Pouch is listed as $19 in the $65 pledge but $25 elsewhere. What's up with that?
Sorry about that. The retail price for the EDC Pouch in the $65 pledge should be $25. Unfortunately, it cannot be updated once someone backs it. Apologies for the typo.
Yes! Sorry about another typo. I forgot to add these in the pledge or it was accidentally overwritten while working on another computer. You definitely get two (2) bolstr Small Carry bags and two (2) EDC pouches with this pledge.
I worked out terms with our manufacturer and they are already making part of the first lot as a test run. Once we cross the $10K mark, we will go into full production and my manufacturer is confident they can meet the delivery schedule (first lot by September). Please note that a good portion of the materials for this project are stocked at our manufacturer. Help us get to $10K!
Maybe, but my interest is in making smaller carry bags than bigger. That said it is all based on input from you so send me a message if you are interested! If it is something that can be done for this campaign I will be sure to send an update.
The shoulder strap has a maximum length of 43" and the elastic waist strap is 35" and expandable up to 50".
It's right handed, which means you wear it over your left shoulder. I happen to be ambidextrous and had to stop and double confirm this for a moment. I am sure you can find interesting debate about the matter out there on the Internet, and I won't go into here. Again, right handed means you wear it on your left shoulder.
There is a two year limited warranty. 1st year worry free warranty. Take a picture of the problem and we will determine if it can be fixed or needs to be replaced. 2nd year against defects (straps, zippers, etc), but not normal wear and tear.
100% yes and yes.
There is a sleeve for a table or iPad mini inside the bag, but for the most part it is open. Also, the sunglass pocket bag is in the main cavity, so it does take up some room. The bosltr EDC pouches help organize in-bag and there are times when you might want the extra storage space vs. extra organization. Importantly there are 7 digits in a phone number for a reason and I like using this particular design constraint for making things simple: http://abcnews.go.com/Technology/brain-memory-magic-number/story…. Perhaps it best serves my memory ;)
I will be sending a survey to ask the color that you would like based on the pledge that you selected.
Yes. Follow these instructions on how to upgrade your pledge: https://www.kickstarter.com/help/faq/backer+questions#faq_41768
There is a water repellant coating on the exterior that helps make the bag water resistant. However, it is not waterproof as the seam are not sealed, so don’t submerge it in water with your stuff in it! Also, the zippers are waterproof.
Sorry, but it does not as we do not know what the duties and taxes would be for all countries. The extra amounts only covers postage.
If you are right handed, then you most likely wear your bolstr on your right side and over your left shoulder. If you are left handed, then the opposite would most likely be the case. However, it ultimately is comes down to preference. So the best way to know on which side of your body you will want to wear your bosltr, throw on a messenger bag and see which hip it rests on. You will know your preference right away from having carried a messenger bag before, and doing the opposite will feel pretty awkward.
