More than 8,203,551* Americans have voted for Donald Trump.
Who are these people? What do they see in Donald Trump? What makes them think a Trump presidency will make America great again? Why do they think America isn't great now? I want to know the answers to these questions. I want to see behind the boasts and the insults and the steaks to expose what's at the heart of this severe discontent in America. So, I'm going to find these people and interview them.
Although Trump doesn't have a record as a member of the political establishment, his leadership has affected people. I want to hear from them as well. I want to hear from the people who were coerced out of their homes to make way for a golf course or a business development. I want to hear from the people who feel they were defrauded by Trump University. I want to hear from the people who applied for jobs at one of Trump's resorts but were passed over in favor of cheaper foreign labor.
I want to talk to people who were Touched By Trump, whether for good or for bad. Perhaps when they see a clear picture of the way Trump has conducted his business, some of those supporters will decide Trump isn't the best choice for a great America.
*As of April 5th
I'm going to interview as many people as I can, both Trump supporters and complainers. I'll be releasing this footage in two ways:
- Short, online interview segments
- A feature documentary
The idea is to ask and answer as many questions about Trump's perceived qualities as possible. Short online segments can get out into the world quickly and will hopefully be shared widely with those who should see them.
The extended length of a feature documentary will give us room to lay out a clear picture of what people think a Trump presidency would look like, countered with a thorough picture of his business record and what it has meant for the people around him. A feature doc will also reach a different audience, and I hope to distribute it as widely as possible in the final weeks leading up to the election, should Trump become the nominee.
As the seemingly impossible idea of Trump winning the nomination has become more and more likely, I've felt a stronger and stronger urge to do something about it. I feel that his nomination would be a major step in the wrong direction, but I'm genuinely curious about why so much of the country disagrees with me.
It's very simple. More support means more interviews with more people. More research into the one skeleton in the closet that may finally undo Trump. More chances to find the Rosetta Stone that unlocks the mind of the Trump voter. More opportunities to bring people together to discuss their grievances civilly instead of just tossing out those they don't agree with. More chances to truly make America great again, one person at a time.

SXSW T-Shirt Special!!!
UPDATE: SXSW T-Shirt Special has ended! I have a limited number of Touched By Trump t-shirts with me at South By Southwest in Austin, Texas. If you're there, find me, make a pledge for a t-shirt reward, and I'll give you your t-shirt now until I run out of shirts. Not at SXSW? Pledge by Saturday, March 19th, and I'll ship your t-shirt by the end of March. Yes, that's before this campaign ends. Yes, you'll get a free shirt if we don't reach our goal. That's how much I want you to have this t-shirt.
Risks and challenges
Creating a documentary is hard work. We only have a very short time to make an impact before the election, and that is a significant challenge. It will also be difficult to find a distributor who will work with us on such a fast schedule. However, we are committed to making this film and getting it out into the world, and your contributions will go a long way towards making that happen.
There is an ever-shrinking possibility that the electorate will stop voting for Trump, an he will suddenly become irrelevant. If only we could be so lucky.
It is also possible that Donald Trump will sue us because he likes to do that. We will never settle.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
