Pow Wow Hawai‘i Feature Film - Director Mikey Inouye's goal is to make a feature documentary. Creating a feature film will require hundreds of man-hours in additional shooting, editing, voiceover studio recording sessions, music composition and licensing, not to mention distribution costs and film festival entry fees.
UPDATE: All $25+ backers will received credit in the book and film.
Pow Wow Hawaii is the collaborative gathering of creatives from around the world in the city of Honolulu, sharing in the process of art and music with the local community and abroad. Pow Wow 2010 started out with a few artists, including founder Jasper Wong, Wu Yue, Will Barras, Pat Lee, and Jahan produced live art, with DJs Verbal and Yoon providing musical inspirations for two days in Hong Kong. The second year followed, moving Pow Wow 2011 to the beautiful island of Oahu for four days with new artists including Suitman, Aaron de la Cruz, Jeff Hamada, 123Klan, Meggs, Prime, Ekundayo, and Kamea Hadar where it became groundbreaking for the local art community. In becoming an annual Hawaii event, Pow Wow 2012 doubled the artists list with bigger names and took over beautifying the streets of Honolulu for a week.
In its fourth year showcase, following the preceding successful years and increasing amount of participants, we aim to make the event more accessible to the public through the production of a book and film. The book will contain high resolution photos of all the completed murals, covering all major Pow Wow 2013 satellite events, with sketches and interviews by artists and Pow Wow organizers. This year's event will be documented on film from opening showcase to the closing finale, including exclusive behind-the-scenes footage on the participants' experiences and into the minds of internationally renowned artists as they create art from the starting concept to the finished piece.
Here is how you can help! For Pow Wow 2013 to be a success, we need your support! Anything you can do either by sharing or giving will start as a contribution towards the creation of the book and film. The resulting success of the book and film will help to raise awareness of our growing local art scene and bring some much-needed exposure to Pow Wow Hawaii’s community outreach programs for the emerging young artists and musicians in the islands. With your help, we can share Pow Wow's efforts in bringing artists and enthusiasts together and inspire the rest of the world.
The film crew for Pow Wow Hawaii is donating literally hundreds of hours of their time to document the massive 2013 gathering, foregoing food, sleep, and occasionally sanity to make the best movie they possibly can. Even after this year’s thousands of gigabytes of footage are in the can, the post-production process ahead of them will be daunting and costly. With enough support, the director of the Pow Wow video will be able to produce a feature documentary that will run the film festival circuit, exposing Pow Wow to an even larger international audience.
Risks and challenges
This will be the production company's first feature film. The primary restriction for all aspiring feature film directors is funding. Every stage of the filmmaking process is rife with expenses, including but not limited to crew wages, equipment costs, post-production fees, and distribution fees. The production company is more than qualified to complete a stellar feature doc, but needs to be at least partially compensated for the time it takes to make one in order to put a hold on other unrelated productions.
We haven't collaboratively created a book before, so we've taken the time to consult with friends and other artists that have taken the steps to publish projects. We've taken into account the cost of printing, shipping, and the layout process necessary to create a high quality book that all artists involved can be proud of.Learn about accountability on Kickstarter
