About

MARICOPACON 2018

AUGUST 11th and 12th

Gold Standard gaming for lovers of board games, card games, and RPGs.

Hello awesome MaricopaCon fans!  We are back for Round Six!  We are trying something new, partnering with a new game convention that was created by one of our very own attendees!  Macro-Con 2017 was fun this year, and many MaricopaCon fans (and GMs) were in attendance.  MaricopaCon 2018 is building Macro-Con into the Kickstarter, to assure the venue space for both conventions is paid off.  We are all a team in Arizona, and we are hoping this sixth Kickstarter is successful.

There will be custom MaricopaCon D6 dice like every year, with this year's color schemes most likely black with yellow pips or black with silver pips.  Chessex is on-board again to help us out with production.  They rock.  Badge ribbons will come with each badge sale like previously.

2018 Badge Artist: Ash Williams

Ash has been drawing since her little sister was born. What started out as stick dogs with angel wings and redraws of Dr. Suess books, has developed over twelve years of scribbles to a dragon with glaring eyes. Ash remembers hosting drawing clubs in third grade because friends would always ask her to teach them to draw like her, but it's more about the experience of learning to draw than immediately knowing.

2018 Program Book Artist: Anabel Amis

Anabel Amis is a an award-winning digital artist, graphic designer, and cosplay enthusiast who has lived in Chandler, AZ for a decade. Raised on fairy tales, anime, and video games as a child, Anabel finds herself influenced by both the colorful and the macabre. Her primary drives are working on concept art, book covers, and helping creators breathe life into their marketing efforts. She also enjoys dabbling as a project manager for Allen Amis Creations (helping with sci-fi and fantasy costumes and props) and runs the Men vs Cosplay and Women vs Cosplay projects.  Anabel and Allen are amazing at what they do, and MaricopaCon is honored to have her design the program book cover.

Cosplay Couple Guests: Tyfani Johnson and Chris Sidwa

Tyfani was introduced to the world of Cosplay in 2012, when she attended Phoenix Comicon as Black Widow from Iron Man 2.  She was Ms. MaricopaCon in 2013.  She met Chris at Amazing Arizona Comicon 2014 in his Batsuit.  Both love to go shooting in the desert, help/attend charity events in cosplay, see the newest movies, workout, and spend time with their five kids (2 humans and 3 dogs).  They will be wed in 2018 and MaricopaCon is very happy for them both.

GM Guest of Honor:  Jessie Foster

Jessie is a solo parent, semi-retired teacher of practical self-defense, and a full-fledged geek. However, he's here because he's a Game Master. And a damn good one too. Jessie's been known as "The GURPS guy" in the Arizona gaming community for nearly thirty years. During that time he's run thousands of hours of board, card, dice, and role-playing games at local and regional game stores, conventions, trade shows, and demo days. Over the past seventeen years, he's done so as an official member of the Men in Black, the volunteer demo team for Steve Jackson Games. The Arizona Men in Black are one of the four pillars that support MaricopaCon every year. MaricopaCon in turn, is pleased to once more roll some dice and get their Munchkin on with Jessie and his team.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Volunteer Guest of Honor:  John Grigg

If there is an unsung hero of Arizona conventions for almost twenty years, it is John Grigg.  He has volunteered at so many local conventions we cannot even keep track any more.  Always with a smile on his face, he is one of the nicest and most dependable people on the planet.  MaricopaCon is honored to honor him this year.  John will be running some games at the con be sure to check them out.

Convention Badge Info

How the badges will work is you will get your MaricopaCon badge and dice the Saturday morning of MaricopaCon (August 11th).  You will get your Macro-Con badge the morning of Macro-Con (April 7th).  The backer list of names for this will be provided to the owner of Macro-Con (Justin).  Both conventions are great for people new to board games, card games, and RPGs.  Our GMs (at both cons) are eager to teach what they run.  Also MaricopaCon is great for cosplayers who like small drama-free cons.

There is going to be a sweet stretch goal (or two) this year as well.  Stay tuned for that (they are in development).  Kids under 12yrs old will still be free to attend MaricopaCon (with a paid adult).  Your favorite local Game Designers will be back along with some sweet vendors.  Gaming hours are the same as last year.  Expect the same number of attendees if not more.

Risks and challenges

1) I set the goal bar and prices a little higher this year to make sure both conventions are paid off (and my two artists get paid).
2) I want the first stretch goal to be a redone RPG or Miniatures Ruleset that I designed and sold years ago. It would be cool to get a game with your badge. Looking at publishing options and help from artists/writers.
3) Get a solid 120+ event schedule again.
4) Repeat the awesomeness of the last five years.
