About

                                                  How it works

You: Pre-buy awesome micro prints for much less than retail.

Me: Get a shiny new printer to make the awesome micro prints.

I want to create high quality giclee's (prints) of my series of Micro Paintings. They are 6"x6" oil paintings on gallery wrapped canvas. So far I have around 12 to choose from with more coming online each month.

My problem is that I have been unhappy with the quality of prints I have been getting from 3rd party printers, and while I am sure that somewhere, someone can print them at the level I am asking for. It seems like the best option is to control the printing process myself by color matching them against the originals in person and not accepting a subpar product.

This has the added benefit of lowering my overhead and making the prints less expensive to purchase, as well as shortening production and shipping times. The hurdle is the cost of a professional grade, wide format printer that will print high quality artwork on canvas. The few that I am looking at cost between $2,500 and $3,500. In addition, I will need ink, canvas, and wood stretchers to make them as close to the originals as possible. (Not to mention the shipping supplies).

I will, of course, sign each print by hand, and for kickstarter purchased prints I will add a small "k" next to the signature to denote it is a kickstarter original print. Who knows, maybe they will be worth a lil' sumpin' sumpin' someday.

But beyond that, I really believe in these little paintings, I love how they come together as a sum greater than their parts, how collectible they feel, and how it creates a "mini gallery" in the space they occupy.

Thank you for taking the time to look at this page and if you find yourself interested, take a chance, help an artist, and get some really cool unique artwork for yourself.

A little about me and what motivates me for this project:

Jason Luper is a full time artist living and working in Riverside, California.

I have been a full time artist for the last 8 years but have always considered myself an artist first, and whatever job I had at the time was secondary, existing only to pay the bills. I have been painting my whole life because it always felt natural for me to do so. My first big professional mural job came with the newly constructed "Boys and Girls Club" of Manatee County in Palmetto Fl. It took me almost a year to stumble into that job, but it was the spark that proved I might be able to actually carve out a living doing what I loved.

I am very happy that, now in my 30's, my technique is beginning to match my vision. These "Micro Paintings" are what I have spent the first half of my life building up to, they may not seem like much, but I see hundreds of them in my mind. They are perfect for me to work with, large enough to be visually appealing, but small enough for me to complete before they get stale. I plow through ideas and concepts and watch as they build upon each other. With this successful campaign, I can begin to focus a lot more energy on them.

What motivates my art in general?

My goal with my art is simply to let the paintings spill out, sometimes I have a general direction in mind but I always listen to where the painting wants to go, not unlike when a writer talks about knowing what a character will do and allowing that to happen. I find the more I try and turn a piece of art in a predetermined direction the more constricted and stiff the painting will feel.

Risks and challenges

Frankly there is very little risk involved. The only possible complication is that the printer does not work as intended, or is defective in some way which could delay the prints as I wait for replacement/repair. Seeing as I am buying the printer brand new, I think the chances of that happening are very low. Basically we are going to set this thing up, run test prints until I am satisfied, and then print-ship-done.
