The Story

On January 10th 1901 in Beaumont Texas, a group of drillers reached a depth of 1,000 feet and struck oil on an ancient salt dome along the Gulf Coast. The event would later be named Spindletop and would produce more oil than the entire United States combined. It is considered the launching point of the Petroleum and Industrial age. We are telling the origin story of the people who made this world changing event happen.Pattillo Higgins and Anthony Lucas were the two main characters responsible for this event. They were outsiders and came from opposite ends of the world but both agreed there was oil just south of Beaumont. Our Story is about their struggle and determination despite incredible odds. While this short film project is only the first scene of the feature film script.  It is the first step in bringing this amazing story to life!  Please consider joining us and being a part of the journey.

The Filmmaker

Jason Leal is a proud native Houstonian and alumnus of the University of Houston. After loosing both parents to cancer, he left a successful career in sales and marketing and began to pursue his lifelong passion for film. Jason’s first foray into filmmaking was as a production assistant in 2013 on various projects in the Houston area. He has since gone on to write, direct, and produce three short films of his own, which have been screened at the Houston Latino Film Festival and the Boomtown Film and Music Festival. His most recent short film, A Mild Skirmish, was awarded the Texas Proud Award at Boomtown. Jason is the recipient of two grants from the Houston Arts Alliance for his dedication to highlighting the city through the art of film. His current project focuses on the famed Spindletop gusher that launched the Texas oil boom and ushered the U.S. into the oil age. He currently lives in Houston with his wife and two dogs, and enjoys attending and volunteering at film festivals and meeting other filmmakers.

Why make this movie?

Stretch Goals

We have a tiered goal system:

$5,000 - Goal #1! Money for 1877 period sets!

$10,000 - Goal #2! Money to shoot the opening and closing 1945 period scenes!

$15,000 - Goal #3! Money for named talent and mugs!

If we reach the goal of $15,000, everyone who puts in $100 or more will get a mug like this one (or similar)
If we reach the goal of $15,000, everyone who puts in $100 or more will get a mug like this one (or similar)

Sustainability

We want to make an effort to eliminate water bottles and cans. If we reach the $15,000 goal, we can give everyone on the cast/crew personalized coffee/soda mugs so they can use that instead of throwing away countless plastic bottles on set.

Risks and challenges

We have done our best to mitigate the financial risk involved with completing a film.

Therefore, we have chosen to break the film up into components and depending on the amount we raise, we will know what we can film.
